CLARITY – 4-6-20 “Mutualizing”Debt

4A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-6-20

“Mutualizing” Debt

What’s Happening: “Reported in a Reuters article yesterday, those in the EU most affected by the coronavirus crisis (Spain Italy, France) are calling for a fund, like the Marshall Plan at the close of WWII ( a U.S. product to rebuild Europe), those least affected (Germany and the Netherlands) lead the fight against it. They argue that a common debt instrument would discourage individual countries from pursuing the structural reform and the balancing of their budgets that would lead to fiscal integrity – sounds like the familiar liberal/conservative positions ( Quoting from the article: In the medium term, Europe needs a ‘new mechanism for debt mutualisation’, Sanchez (Spanish PM) also told the newspaper in comments published on Sunday. ‘If the virus doesn’t stop at borders, then financing mechanisms cannot do so either,’ he said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “That’s over there, What has that got to do with me?”

Biblical Response:  “Probably little…in the short term., but eventually lots (in the price of goods imported from the EU). Time is a multiplier, and the longer you avoid responsibility, the greater the bill will be when it finally comes due. Sure, everybody likes pushing peaks into valleys…except valley-dwellers who’ve just been covered by a mountain (of debt)…and the peak-dwellers who miss their exclusive view. Maybe the scripture is true that recommends:

‘Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. (Rom. 13:8 KJV)

“The added pressure of impending debt might tempt one with compromise…which might be why this recommendation was made in the first place.”

“Christians? We believe that debt is precarious, at best. I like the Living Bible’s rendering of the above scripture. It adds after the first phrase: ‘…except love; and never finish paying that debt.’ Of course, it’s referring to the debt we owe for the Lord laying down His life…which we gladly pay in good works (Heb. 10:24).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to keep short accounts with You: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-24-19 Waxes and Wanes

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-24-19

Waxes and Wanes

What’s Happening: “France, Germany, and England, arguably the core of the E.U., have agreed that Iran is the culprit in the drone attack on Saudi oil fields. Citing violations of the 2015 nuclear agreement ((JCPOA), which with Iran they are joint signatories of, and which the U.S, has unilaterally exited, they all signed a statement condemning Iran. It remains to be seen whether this ‘sabre-rattling’ overture will have any effect on the bellicose nature of the Arab regime ( ‘The time has come for Iran to accept a long term negotiation framework for its nuclear program, as well as regional security issues, which include its missile programs,’ the joint statement read.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Maybe they, too, will exit the 2015 Agreement.”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not,…they are too heavily invested into diplomacy…besides, winter’s coming on, and how will their citizenry heat their homes without Iranian oil? They’re not about to put sanctions on Iran that might jeopardize Iranian deliveries…and they certainly don’t want to go to war…at least this is what the Iranians are counting on.”

“This is the latest episode in a millennia-long drama that began in Babylonia and later Persia (ancient Iran) long ago. It includes such personages as Alexander the Great, Roman Emperors, Mohammed; and subsequent conquests including The Crusades, Genghis Kahn’s exploits, etc. Why does history keep repeating itself? Man refuses to learn its lessons…and that may be due to the fallen nature of man (1 Cor, 10:11-12).”

‘Christians? Nobody claimed learning history’s lessons would be easy or natural…indeed, it may be supernatural (John 16:12-13). The first lesson, which obviously Shakespeare learned: this all needs to be taken in stride…it’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing;””

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to wisely take a course of action that takes into consideration the cyclical nature of Fallen Man; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-24-19 So Goes the Kingdom

A Biblical Response to Current Events -5-24-19

So Goes the Kingdom

What’s Happening: “Long embattled Prime Minister (PM) of the United Kingdom and leader of the Conservative Party, Theresa May resigned yesterday. Some say not being able to negotiate a departure from the EU that was acceptable to Members of Parliament meant she was not conservative enough. In any case, her departure is effective June 7, just days after Trump’s pre-planned visit (  ‘It is and will always remain a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit,’ May said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Big deal! What does that even mean: ‘deliver Brexit’?”

Biblical Response:  “At least you’re asking….and it is a BIG deal! Let me give an abbreviated history of Brexit so that the average American has a reasonable understanding. The Brits held a referendum (a nationwide vote of the citizenry) in June of 2016. They voted 51.9% to leave the EU and be able to make their own deals economically. They were scheduled to leave March 29 (of this year). Although Theresa May has tried on numerous occasions to negotiate a smooth transition (one that would lead to lasting ties to Brussels), Parliament could not agree, though they did extend the departure date to Oct. 31.  It is believed that the same ‘drain-the-swamp’ sentiment that elected Donald Trump, led to the result of the Brexit referendum. Apparently, the liberalness of much of Europe was just too much for Great Britain.

Does this mean that Brexit is dead? No, just delayed. Will the next PM do better? Not if he or she tries to get the UK out of the EU with strings attached. He or she will stay in office as long as Brexit prospers. As goes the king, so goes the kingdom. Or maybe, as goes the kingdom, so goes the king.

“Christians? We’ve seen kingdoms rise, and kingdoms fall. (And ‘kingdoms’ doesn’t mean what they used to.) Still, it is generally true that the fortunes of a country are tied to its leadership (Gal. 6:7; Prov. 16:12-15). That is why Jesus is called the Good Shepherd. He leads us (His sheep) where we’ll prosper (Ps. 23). And because He’s the King of Kings, of His kingdom there will be no end (Is. 9:7; Luke 1:33). Unlike Theresa May.

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, only you know what will benefit Your people in the long run…bring that to pass and show us what part we are to play; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
