Chaos vs. Strength

What’s Happening: “Bethel, Ohio, normally a peaceful small town (3,000 inhabitants, mostly white) became a city full of chaos on Sunday as anti-protesters clashed with BLM protesters. It could have become more violent, but with all the six cops the town had and the nine cops from the county, the peace-keepers were just not prepared…which was probably a good thing. There were many postings on Facebook, with accompanying videos, that probably were set up by one side or the other in an attempt to pick a fight. Confusion reigned, the protesters message was dampened by the anti-protesters and another media-made-moment fizzled…at least that’s how I see it (https://www.yahoo.com/news/violent-counter-protesters-mobbed-small-193200016.html). Is the presence of a show of force a good thing? Sometimes. It can be an over-reaction that only escalates. The lack of a proper ‘overwhelming force’ seems to have been a different kind of leadership this time.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Surely the media didn’t want it to turn violent!”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps not, though their attempt to make a story of this is telling. I mean, no one was arrested. No one was taken to the hospital. No fires…no rioting…no looting. Only a few encounters…which the media tried to make much of… This bring to mind a scripture that describes it perfectly:

‘When the country is in chaos, everybody has a plan to fix it —  But it takes a leader of real understanding to straighten things out.’ (Prov. 28:2 MSG)”

“I’m not saying Trump is that leader…I’m not say he isn’t. I’m just saying we need to remember it’s all about ratings…what the media can charge advertisers.”

“Christians?  We believe the enemy is all about confusion and chaos…ultimately to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). But the good news is, God has an agenda, too…and His prevails (the last part of the aforementioned scripture).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to project strength, but in a measured response, not an overwhelming reaction; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-5-19 Free, But Costly

CLARITY

Free, But Costly

What’s Happening: “If you are a stockholder in Amazon, Google, Apple or Facebook, the recent rumors of antitrust investigations by the FTC and the DOJ have freaked you out! The reason? Their stocks have subsequently plummeted. Of course, their will be a short-term cost to the consumers of their products as these tech giants try to make up for stock losses by increasing their prices – and long-term gains if these investigations yield a forced breakup (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-technology-antitrust/u-s-moving-toward-major-antitrust-probe-of-tech-giants-idUSKCN1T42JH). Lawmakers on both sides have weighed in: ‘It’s got so much power, and so unregulated,’ said Lindsey Graham (R), Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman. Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal said on Twitter, ‘Their predatory power grabs demand strict and stiff investigation and antitrust action.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “And this should concern me, why?”

Biblical Response:  “Because it will, no doubt, affect everyone’s bottom line…significantly but imperceptibly. To be a truly informed consumer today requires Business 101, or at least a rudimentary knowledge of how the capitalistic system runs. One of the first maxims you learn is that everything costs…or as the ‘old school’ puts it: there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch (Robert Heinlein’s novel of 1966). Or biblically, you could realize that the best thing in life is free: salvation (Rom. 6:23).”

“Christians? Oh, we believe that salvation is free…to those who receive it. It was very costly to Jesus…He had to die extremely painfully for crimes He didn’t commit. So, I guess you could say it was free to us…but not free to Him…it cost Him everything.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we need to be aware of what things cost, help us also to be aware (and grateful) for what didn’t cost us anything; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-23-19 Whatever Happened to Civility?

CLARITY

Whatever Happened to Civility?

What’s Happening: “The jury is still out (no pun intended) on 27-year-old Christopher Cleary, a Utah man that maintains he’s still a virgin and has no girlfriend, He is being charged with a third degree felony (attempted threat of terrorism) for posting on Facebook that he was going to ‘kill as many girls as he could see’ because he was rejected…a dubious claim as two girls claimed to have a sexual relationship with him and he was living with a girl when was arrested (https://www.yahoo.com/news/man-threatened-kill-many-girls-141138663.html). ‘All I wanted to be was loved,” Cleary posted. ‘Yet no one cares about me, I’m 27 years old and I’ve never had a girlfriend before and I’m still a virgin, this is why I’m planning on shooting up a public place soon and being the next mass shooter ‘cause I’m ready to die.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Sounds like a bad hombre that needs to be removed from society!”

Biblical Response:  “And he may be, though I don’t believe his consorts anymore than I do him. What I want to ask is, where are his parents? Apparently he was not taught how to handle rejection…or anger, for that matter. Life is full of hard knocks. Kids are supposed to learn how to handle that while they’re young…so that when they get older, they have learned discretion…to be angry, but sin not (Eph. 4;26). That’s what parenting is for. (You know, that old-fashioned impediment to a two-income higher standard of living.,,what we have are kids posting threats on social media, still living in their parents’ basements which were afforded by that increased standard of living!)”

“Christians? We’ll probably get accused of child abuse for visiting the ‘woodshed’ so often…maybe you’d like visiting the prison better? See the following ‘outmoded’ scriptures

“Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.” (Prov. 13:24 NLT)

“Withhold not correction from the child; (For) if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.” (Prov. 23:13 ASV)

“And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;

For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.”

(Heb. 12:5-6 NKJV)

ETC., ETC.

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, make the parent impervious to the protests of the disciplined child, but attentive to Your merciful voice of direction: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-11-18

Free…Sort Of

What’s Happening:  “Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Facebook, faced off 44 Senators who grilled him yesterday in 5 hours for the selling of personal data by Cambridge Analytica. Although he often spoke agreeing on the need for proper regulation (even agreeing to submit a list of proposed regulations), his main response was that he was sorry that Facebook had been so slow and he promised to do better. Facebook’s “free” service is paid for by advertisers (http://www.wired.co.uk/article/mark-zuckerberg-testimony-highlights-facebook-congress). In responding to Senator Hatch’s question if Facebook would always be a free service, he said, ‘Senator, yes. There will always be a version of Facebook that is free. It is our mission to try to help connect everyone around the world and to bring the world closer together.’

Knee-Jerk Response:  “As long as I don’t have to start paying to show who I had lunch with…”

Biblical Response:  “According to Zuckerberg, probably not…though you might have to be willing to surrender information on your buying habits. As economist Milton Friedman popularized, ‘There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.’ That’s why Facebook is free. It might have been Zuckerberg’s youthful desire to ‘connect everyone’ that first motivated him as a student at Harvard, but now he has 2 billion users across the planet and algorithms that tell his advertisers their likely buying habits…and that’s worth a lot of money. Will their be abuse? In this world of hackers and AI (Artificial Intelligence)…of course. Will the public be safeguarded? If Zuckerberg wants his company to continue to exist. ”

“Christians? Hopefully, we are not so naive as to believe that Zuckerberg (or anyone) has only altruistic and pure motives (Rom. 3:23). We should be open to businesses making a reasonable profit (after all, competition in a free market economy usually takes care of that), but we also must realize that Milton Friedman was right (Gal. 6:7).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give our Senators the persistence and wisdom to look out for our interests;  in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
