Reports vs. Facts

What’s Happening: “Kim Jong-Un’s absence from his grandfather’s birthday celebration (Kim Il Sung) has caused much speculation and generated reports that he was recovering from heart surgery due to excessive smoking, dangerous obesity, and fatigue. Seeing as his father and predecessor’s death was not known (even by his closest advisors) for a few days, it is no wonder rumors swirl. Some say they have intelligence on the subject which confirms Kim’s (now in his thirties) ill health. Others say it’s all just smoke and mirrors – designed to keep everyone guessing.and his name in the news…still, his appearance a few years ago with a cane doesn’t help (https://news.yahoo.com/seoul-plays-down-report-north-korean-leaders-health-050913307.html).Quoting from the AFP article: ‘Excessive smoking, obesity, and fatigue were the direct causes of Kim’s urgent cardiovascular treatment,’ it cited an unidentified source inside the country as saying.””

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Who do you believe?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, freedom of the press has taken a real beating lately, huh? With accusations of Fake News (some of them well-founded) and intentional (and unintentional) spin, it’s hard to know whom to believe? Thankfully, there’s Someone whose word is dependable (Ps. 89:35; 1 Tim. 1:2). The real rub comes in our ability to discern what the Holy Spirit is saying…and then there are those things He wants to remain a secret (Deut. 29:29). Most of the time, we have to rely on common sense…even if the truth is sometimes not very titillating.”

“Christians? We believe in facts. It’s just sometimes they are hard to know. Even when we do, we have to think Christianly about them…and that goes against our human nature. That’s one of the reasons why we need a new nature (Eph. 4:24):

‘Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy’ (NLT).

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to act on the facts, not react to reports; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-22-20 Myths, Legends, and Facts

Myths, Legends, and Facts

What’s Happening: “Yesterday, archaeologists announced they had found a memorial to Romulus, the legendary Founder of Rome, in the old part of Rome and the site, though originally discovered in the early part of the 20th century, just revealed its true significance. Romulus allegedly was raised by a mother wolf, was found with his twin brother Remus (whom he later killed), and became the first king of the city he founded and that bears his name. How much is true? Well, we don’t know (https://www.yahoo.com/news/archaeologists-unveil-possible-shrine-romes-161901703.html). ‘This area is highly symbolic. This surely cannot be Romulus’ tomb, but it is a place of memory, a cenotaph,’ Alfonsina Russo, head of the Coliseum Archaeological Park,  said to Reuters TV.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Maybe it’s true…”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not. Most myths and legends are retellings of some distorted rumor that was embellished to make it more sensational (think Fake News on steroids). That’s one of the reasons the Jews had a leg up on their surrounding civilization competitors. They were known as the ‘People of the Book,’ as their heritage was recorded – an almost unique attribute (most peoples only had oral tradition). Add to that the fact that their story was rendered by 66 earthly authors over several centuries, has never been found to be ultimately contradictory, and has been found to be consistently authoritative and factually trustworthy, and you begin to understand why believers consider the texts of Scripture with such reverence (2 Tim. 3:16-17).”

“Do Christians support the work of archaeologists? Absolutely! In fact, many archaeological finds support the testimony of Scripture (there have been many that originally thought they had uncovered  scriptural inconsistency…only to later discover corroboration, not contradiction).”

“Christians? We believe that ‘Truth stands the test of time. Lies are soon exposed.’ (Prov. 12:19 LB) Whether the find above is factual or not will be determined by time…and whether it contradicts what Scripture may have to say.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to discern between fact and fiction, to be suspicious of things that at first appear contradictory, and to pursue truth doggedly; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-25-19 Silent, But Not Inactive

Silent, But Not Inactive

What’s Happening: “You’ve seen little of Sarah Sanders lately, and that may be by design. The President told her ‘not to bother’ and she seems to have taken that to heart…only appearing twice in October, once each in November and December, and not at all since then (https://conservativebuzz.net/no-more-press-briefings-for-sanders/). Talk about ‘controlling the narrative!’In this era of Fake News, it’s hard to blame Trump or Sanders. ‘Nick Sandmann and the students of Covington have become symbols of Fake News and how evil it can be,’ Trump said. ‘They have captivated the attention of the world, and I know they will use it for the good – maybe even to bring people together. It started off unpleasant, but can end in a dream!”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Don’t we need the media’s input?”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, but only the UNVARNISHED input. It’s one thing to comment on facts, and another thing to make the facts up to fit your design. When you cannot rely on the news’ narrative being true, you arrive at false conclusions. FEAR has been acronymically defined as: ‘False Evidence Appearing Real.’ Maybe that’s why conclusions drawn (and actions taken) often are done impulsively…more of a ‘Knee-Jerk reaction’ than a carefully thought out response.”

“Christians? If the ‘truth will set you free’ (John 8:32), lies will enslave. We should not think silence, however, is lack of interest or activity (either on Sarah Sanders part or God’s). The four hundred years from Malachi (the last book of the Old Testament) to Matthew (the first book of the New Testament) were not really silent, though they are often labelled the Silent Years; it’s just that God was speaking through actions and circumstances. Equally eloquent, no doubt.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be attentive and discerning, however You choose to speak; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
