Say It’s Not So!

What’s Happening: “Parents lament, ‘Surely not…’ Unfortunately, it’s true. In an article posted after five pm yesterday, Montana Western University now threatens to punish incivility if it even get to the phase of – wait for it – ‘mean facial expressions.’According to the Student Code of Conduct manual, students may suffer ‘suspension, or in extreme cases expulsion’ (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/thought-police-public-universitys-rules-now-prohibit-offensive-facial-expressions/?ff_source=Email&ff_medium=newsletter-CT&ff_campaign=dailypm&ff_content=conservative-tribune). What about free speech? States Laura Beltz of the Foundation for Individual Rights, ‘The policy states that student must promote an atmosphere of civility and that their discussions should never become ‘mean, nasty, or vindictive’…’ This is college, not kindergarten!”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “They are just trying to manage offense.”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, but is that even possible? What kind of world would it be if you could do that? Would you want to live in it? Maybe George Orwell was right! Thought police may have already arrived. God help us!”

“Christians? We live in a fallen world. Without a nature change offense is inevitable. The only cure is Jesus (of course, He is called ‘the Rock of Offense’ – Rom. 9:33). Are we to offend? We should try not to (Rom. 12:18), but all do not play by that rule. We are not to be surprised. The world hated Jesus long before it hated us (Jn 15:25; 17:45).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may we enter conflict with a word of forgiveness on our lips and a kind word in our minds; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-5-18 Costly Free Speech

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-5-18

Costly Free Speech

What’s Happening:  “You do some things and they don’t matter…you do others, and they do. At least that’s what Juli Briskman found when she gave the middle-finger gesture to a passing Trump motorcade and promptly got fired by her employer, government contractor Akima, LLC. Now she’s suing for wrongful termination (https://www.yahoo.com/news/woman-fired-flipping-off-trump-230233890.html). Briskman was quoted as saying, ‘I filed this lawsuit against my former employer today because I believe that Americans should not be forced to choose between their principles and their paychecks…’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What’s this country coming to if you can’t express yourself freely?”

Biblical Response:  “Civility, maybe… Of course, the First Amendment guarantees your right to free speech and hand gestures can be argued to be a form of that, but there’s nothing in the Constitution or its Amendments that says that free speech is ‘free.’… there may be consequences for giving vent to your emotions. That’s why a civil society learns discretion. I have no problem with Ms. Briskman showing her displeasure…as long as she is willing to bear the consequences…unintended or otherwise.”

“Christians? We should have issue with Ms. Briskman’s actions for two reasons: 1)Her expression was vulgar; Scripture is plain about that (Eph. 4:29); and 2) She is attempting to evade responsibility for her action (Matt. 12:36). Actually, I have been guilty for speaking ‘out of turn,’ for saying something inappropriate for my audience or my situation…my father used to tell me, “Your mouth is going to get you into more trouble than your mouth will ever get you out of.” And I’ve had to repent of some of the things I’ve said and done. However, I see no contrition here.”

“When Peter and Paul were hauled before the Jewish leaders for speaking in the Name of Jesus (a convicted and sentenced blasphemer) and for healing, they were threatened and told never to speak in this Name again…which order they promptly disobeyed (Acts 4). Freedom isn’t free, but sometimes it’s worth the price. If there is no price we are either condemned to incivility or injustice.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to exercise discretion, for by taking Your Name, we have become Your representatives (2 Cor. 5:20); in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
