CLARITY – 6-26-19 Badge of Courage

CLARITY

Badge of Courage

What’s Happening: “The President’s son, Eric Trump (also CEO of the Trump Organization), was spat upon by an employee at a posh bar yesterday. The incident led to the Secret Service immediately taking the employee into custody. It follows a pattern of similar persecution expressions at restaurants since Trump took office…Sarah Huckabee-Sanders, Kirstjen Nielsen, Stephen Miller, etc…Eric cited a lack of polite behavior from a party that touts tolerance (https://www.yahoo.com/news/eric-trump-says-employee-spit-115523095.html).  ‘For a party that preaches tolerance, this once again demonstrates they have very little civility. When somebody is sick enough to resort to spitting on someone, it just emphasizes a sickness and desperation and the fact that we’re winning,’ Eric Trump said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Maybe it was just a ‘wet comment’ … you know, ‘say it, don’t spray it.’”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe…I wasn’t there…I’ll leave that for the courts to decide. Anyway, anyone ‘upsetting the apple cart’ (or ‘draining the swamp’) should expect a little opposition. It’s part of the price for doing things conventional in an unconventional way. Persecution is like that. The ‘powers that be’ have done things a certain way (in both parties) for a long time. When someone comes along who plays by a different set of rules…well, let’s just say there are a few who don’t want to surrender their power without a fight.

Not to make an analogy that elevates the current administration, but the early Christians endured ten persecutions under the Romans. Finally, all that ended with the Council of Nicea (325 AD)…which was called by a Roman Emperor. Constantine then established a ‘swamp-like’ hierarchy that began a thousand-year reign of ecclesiastical power…oh, by the way they call it the Dark Ages. ”

“Christians? As I’ve already established, persecution just comes with the territory (John 15:18-19). We should wear the fruit of our actions as a badge of courage.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may truth prevail…regardless of who purveys it…and may the truth have its freeing effect; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-12-19 Love and Hate

CLARITY

Love and Hate

What’s Happening: “Chris Pratt, famous actor from The Guardians of the Galaxy, and attendant at Hillsong Church, argues with a post from Ellen Page that claims  his church is anti-LGBTQ. Brian Houston, founder of that church has been quoted as saying: ‘We do not affirm a gay lifestyle’ and won’t let gay men or women hold positions of leadership in the church (https://www.yahoo.com/news/chris-pratt-responds-ellen-pages-criticism-churchs-lgbtq-stance-says-open-doors-absolutely-everyone-012229700.html).

‘My faith is important to me but no church defines me or my life, and I am not a spokesman for any church or any group of people,” Pratt posted. ‘My values define who I am.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Doesn’t the article say that Pratt has been divorced? Doesn’t God hate divorce? (Matt. 19:8)”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, some translations may render it so (other translations do not). Actually, Prov. 29:27 says best God’s nuanced attitude: ‘The good hate the badness of the wicked. The wicked hate the goodness of the good.’ (LB) God hates the sin, but loves the sinner.”

“Christians? In our disdain of LGBTQ people, we should condemn their lifestyle WHILE welcoming them. Over-eating, workaholism, murder, child abuse…these are all equally reprehensible in that they all separate us from God, but we can walk victoriously above these sins. We send a mixed message when we turn our back on people who are or were caught up in these behaviors. Our repulsion at the collateral damage that some sins wreak must never put us off to those who commit such things.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to find the balance between loving the sinner and hating the sin; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-29-18 Timing is Everything

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-29-18

Timing is Everything

What’s Happening: “Everyone has, sadly, heard about the mass shooting that occurred at Squirrel Hill Synagogue in Pittsburgh, the lives of 11 worshipers who died, and the injured four police officers who were also shot…even of 50-year-old suspect Robert Bowers, but have you heard about Rabbi Husbands-Hankin who was late to the service and narrowly escaped the shooting? (https://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2018/10/28/squirrel-hill-sixth-presbyterian-church-synagogue-shooting-interfaith-service/).  He was late because he was still at another service, but wanted to see his friend at Squirrel Hill. Asked by a reporter if his friend, who was injured, was going to be okay, he said. “God-willing.”,

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Just at the right place at the right time.”

Biblical Response:  “You think?! Kind of makes you want to swallow that curse at traffic…maybe there’s a reason for your delay. We go about our days randomly frustrated at first this obstacle to our progress and that… who knows? As Amy Grant (song actually written by Richard Smallwood) once sang: “Through danger seen and unseen

There’s protection all around

Under the refuge of God’s wings

Security is found

For there are angels watchin’ you to keep you in all of your ways

Keeping you from stumbling so don’t be afraid

God’s appointed angels watching over me, angels watchin’ over me.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in timing. As the Scriptures say, Jesus came ‘at just the right time’ (2 Cor. 6:2 NLT). Sometimes we just have to be patient to allow circumstances and events to take place…but we have this confidence:

‘We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.’ (Rom. 8:28 NASU).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to patiently wait for you to move…it sure beats the stress of frustration that comes from You ‘failing’ to meet our agenda; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
