CLARITY – 10-13-20 Whiter Than Snow

A Biblical Response to Current Events 10-13-20

Whiter Than Snow

What’s Happening: “The headline here is exactly what I hoped for and certainly more than I deserve on my own merits – ALAN E. SARGENT FINISHES RACE, ENTERS HEAVENLY COURT. But that’s old news, and it gets older every day – which is hard to keep track of here since there is no darkness.”

What’s happening now? Well, it’s worship like you can’t imagine. The celestial court never ceases to call out the majesty of the Most High and the worthiness of His Son – the Lamb – Jesus Christ our Lord. What else is happening now? Jesus is constantly interceding for you with his Father. He’s doing it even now. He makes no argument for worldly gain or convenience. He just keeps saying, “the price I paid is enough.” If you could only see the Father as I do now, you would understand. What you think of when you think of majesty, holiness, love, jealousy, justice, and wrath – those are grains of truth compared to the meteoric reality of the Almighty. But the same goes for grace. You can’t really fathom that either. There’s no end to any of it. The Father’s single thought of love toward you is more vast than all of creation. So also is his wrath against sin. So also is the perfection required to stand in his presence. Yet, here I stand. Present with the Lord. I guess what I’m saying is, Jesus is faithful. Among the thousand things I tried to teach while living among you, I hope that is the one that sticks. If he is not faithful, then we have no hope. But because he is faithful, our hope is assured. Speaking of hope, I do hope to see you all again. Until that day, I will sing unto the Lord a new song.

Knee-Jerk Response:  “But this is just a posthumous swan song, written by someone in Mr. Sargent’s family. All we are is matter in motion. If there’s a heaven and a God, where’s the proof? At least I can touch and feel science.”

Biblical Response: “You’re right about the first part. This is not really from Alan (duh?). We are, in fact, matter in motion – but that’s not all we are.”

“Christians? Only the God who made us has sufficiently been able to diagnose the problem of guilt or the virtue of love. Love and guilt, shame and sacrifice, insecurity and generosity; the list goes on of things that cannot be explained by a ‘matter in motion’ diagnosis of the human condition. But all of these are perfectly explained by sin and God’s plan of redemption. Although many academics will sue one another over plagiarism. they have only contempt and disdain for what was written by holy men as inspired by the Holy Spirit. We are creatures made in the image of a Holy God, and in Him we live and move and have our being. And as surely as there is a God – the God – there is a heaven from whence He has condescended on our behalf in the person and work of Jesus Christ who said, ‘Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also’ – (John 14:1-3). And regarding science, no you can’t touch and feel it. You can touch and feel creation, which God made; but science is a process of discovery – not a thing you can touch – and it is best used with the presupposition that the earth and its fullness are the Lord’s.”

Here’s a prayer you can pray: “Heavenly Father, please grant me the grace to live daily in light of who you are instead of who I am apart from you. Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to you, and as such, let them be winsome to others who unwittingly seek to see you through me. Forgive me for my apathy and arrogance in the way I have given lip service to the truth while seeking my own way, for as long as I do this, I only affirm in their ways those who refuse to acknowledge you has God. Thank you for Jesus, who took my sin and shame and gave me his righteousness in return. Thank you for the church – the body of Christ – that stands often wounded but always victorious against the gates of Hell. Thank you for this world in which you have placed me. I know that I am not untimely born, but rather that you have formed me and raised me for such a time as this. And thank you for the hope I have in the resurrected and ascended Christ whose victory over sin and death are my guarantee that I, being found in him, will also be raised up on the last day and be seated with him in heavenly places. Thank you for the life and ministry of Alan Sargent, whose obedience has shaped the lives of so many according to your will. You, oh Lord, are the author and finisher of my faith, and you have known the details of my every living and dying event; but I know you have always been pleased to use your servants to accomplish your will, so thank you for Alan’s life and for using him in such mighty ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

CLARITY – 4-20-19 Certainties

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-20-19

What’s Happening: “It’s 24 years later for most of us, but for the families of those killed (168) or injured (680), it was like yesterday when Timothy McVeigh and co-conspirator Terry Nichols blew up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Before 9/11 happened, it was the deadliest terror attack in the U.S. (albeit domestic terrorism). Memorials were only local ( Posted by u/homefree122, ‘I woke up and watched the local news hour, and of course it was covering the bombing memorial. But, sadly, when the national news came on, not a word was said about the Murrah Bombing.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What a tragedy! Those folks were just going about their business!”

Biblical Response:  “I weep, too (Rom. 12:15). However, like I’ve said before, all tragedy is local. Sure, it makes a big contemporary splash, but those national ripples are pretty small when diminished by time.  The tragedies in Parkland, Columbine, Sandy Hook , the World Trade Center, terrorist activities the world over,.etc., were peopled by folks just ‘going about their business’, too. The uncertainties of life find most of us seeking the certainty of justice…and always feeling cheated, However, heaven and hell are probably the certainties we seek…whether we know it or not.”

“Christians? We believe, also as I’ve said before, justice makes hell necessary, mercy makes heaven possible. We look at this life and agree that there are two inevitable certainties: death and taxes, but beyond this life (the length of which pales by comparison) are certainties that are eternal realities: heaven and hell (ps. 139:8).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may we take comfort from this truth, not fear; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
