A Biblical Response to Current Events -5-28-19
Lost and Found
What’s Happening: “35-year-old Amanda Eller, a physical therapist, yoga instructor and avid hiker was found in the Makawao Forest Reserve in Maui 17 days after she ventured off the trail to rest. Javier Cantellops, with two other people, was searching from a helicopter when he spotted her in a creek bed between two waterfalls. She said: ‘I looked up and they were right on top of me, I was like, ‘Oh my God,’ and I just broke down and started bawling’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/hawaii-woman-rescued-forest-told-self-not-183603533.html) Although she was lost, she said, ‘The last 17 days of my life have been the toughest days of my life, and it’s been a really significant spiritual journey that I was guided on, and there were times of total fear and loss and wanting to give up, and it did come down to life and death and I had to choose and I chose life.’”
Knee-Jerk Response: “Sounds like she was pretty lucky!”
Biblical Response: “Yeah…if you believe in that sort of thing. Sounds pretty sovereign to me. She might have been lost to her and the searchers, but God knew where she was the whole time. Besides, He’s more concerned with the condition of her soul and spirit than her body. They, too, may have been lost…that’s way above my paygrade. At any rate, by her own admission, she ‘chose life.’ Kind of reminds me of a scripture:
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, (Deut. 30:19 NASU)
We’re all lost (at least before we choose Life)…maybe not physically, but spiritually. It’s great that she chose life physically. Maybe it was (or will be) more than that.
“Christians? Oh we believe in being lost…and found (read Luke 15). We also believe we are born, but must be ‘born again’ (John 3:3-8).
Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray: “Heavenly Father, help us, since we are all lost (Isaiah 53:6; Rom. 3:23), to find You, for You are our Compass, our Navigator to a Promised Land, to a rescue certain; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
