CLARITY – 11-13-18 “Don We Now Our ‘Gay’ Apparel”

CLARITY

“Don We Now Our ‘Gay’ Apparel”

What’s Happening: “An undercover reporter has exposed a Pentecostal church in England for its deliverance ministry ‘conversion therapy’ to gays which includes counseling, prayer and other ‘demeaning’ practices acording to the LGBTQ community (https://www.yahoo.com/news/undercover-reporter-exposes-gay-apos-040318195.html). .

Huffington Post reports that several states and principalities in the U.S. have adopted legislation to protect LGBTQ youth by banning the practice; among these are California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and the District of Columbia. ‘Gay’ did not always mean what it predominantly means today.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It’s terrible what some churches do today!”

Biblical Response:  “What some churches do today may be terrible…but what this or many churches in America who offer homosexual lifestyle change (or counseling) is NOT terrible – it offers hope. Call me old fashioned, but the ‘Gay’ lifestyle is condemned by Scripture. Sure, there are scriptures against it in the Old Testament (Lev. 18:22; 20:13), but the New Testament condemns it, too (1 Cor. 6:9; 1 Tim 1:10). Dressing it up (no pun intended) with a nice word (GAY) does not make the practice any less reprehensible.”

Christians? It may not be politically correct to condemn so acceptable a practice, but I’d rather be in step with God, than popular with the world (1 John 2:15). Christians believe God created them ‘male and female’ (Gen 1:27); Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. But you may say, ‘I was born this way’…this is my proclivity. So? I was born with the ‘proclivity’ to sin, but I ‘don’t let sin rule in my body’ (Rom. 6:12). Sure, I may be tempted to do this or that, but I can resist temptation (James 4:7-8). Will it be hard? Yes. But you do not struggle alone (Psalm 23; Matt. 28:20).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, let us call a spade a spade, even if it’s politically incorrect to do so; help us to embrace the truth that persecution is inevitable if you’re friends with God; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Confusing

What’s Happening:  “A Jesuit priest, James Martin, protested that the Catholic Church has not been ‘Building a Bridge’ (the title of his 2017 book) to the LGBTQ Community at the World Meeting of Families that Pope Francis is to address this weekend (https://www.yahoo.com/news/catholic-conference-hears-appeal-church-welcome-gay-people-155514166.html). In a separate news story, the Catholic Church is still reeling over the revelation that its Cardinals, Bishops and Priests have long been involved in a pedophilia ring that includes cover-ups and heinous secret acts of over 1,000 victims for 70 years (http://www.coolconversations.co/pedophilia-catholic-churches/). I’m a little confused and I’ll bet you are, too.. On the one hand, the Catholic Church is to welcome gays and on the other hand to condemn pedophelia?! Don’t they see the conflict here?”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Perhaps you’re being to Puritanical here. That’s why the church is losing membership…a big tent needs to be inclusive.”

Biblical Response:  “I almost don’t know where to start. In the first place, the Puritans were our ancestors and they may have had restrictions on behavior that kept many practises in the closet (which is a myth – there is no closet if God can see through the walls – however, I agree that only activities brought out of the ‘closet’ can be dealt with). Secondly, The church (small ‘c’) may be losing members, but membership that swells due to inclusiveness or ‘modernism’ may not swell the rolls of the Church universal (large ‘C’)\…and maybe it shouldn’t. Moreover, much pedophilia gets its start in the LGBTQ community, though I dare say, they’d rather not talk about that.”

Christians? We are against ‘unnatural affection’ of any kind (Rom. 1:3; 2 Tim. 3:3; Col. 3:5); whether it’s homosexual or heterosexual the consent of the recipient must be a factor, and that within Scriptural bounds. You cannot give encouragement to one unrighteous behavior to disallow another.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give our leaders clear guidance as to what behavior they are to promote and what to plainly condemn

c; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-5-18 No Cake, Still Sweet

No Cake, Still Sweet

What’s Happening:  “The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled yesterday (7-2) that Jack Phillips was entirely within his rights when he refused five years ago (5 yrs!) to create a cake for the marriage of a same-sex couple, despite a lower court’s ruling to the contrary (https://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=WA18F04&f=WU18F02). ‘Everyone is welcome in my shop, be it homeless folks (many of whom I’ve befriended over coffee, cookies and conversation), the two men who are suing me, or anyone else who finds their way in,’ said Mr. Phillips. ‘The God that I serve, whose arms are open to all, expects that of me, and it is my joy to obey Him. But creating a cake that celebrates a view of marriage in conflict with my faith is not something that I can do.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “For crying out loud, it’s just a cake!”

Biblical Response:  “If Jack Phillips doesn’t want to bake a cake for a homosexual couple who wants to get married, saying it’s against his religion, he shouldn’t be forced to do so… and apparently, SCOTUS agrees. Whether that protection can be extended to other providers (say limousine services, hall renters, or musicians, etc.) is for other cases. But it is the issue of our day, believe me.”

“Christians? To say the Scripture does not support homosexuality (let alone gay marriage) is an understatement (see: Lev 18:22, 20:13; Rom. 1:24-27, etc.). That is the difference between ‘love’ and ‘like.’While I am to love all people, I don’t have to like everything they do. Let me quote the Living Bible’s rendering of Proverbs 29:27. It states our obligations best, ‘The good hate the badness of the wicked. The wicked hate the goodness of the good.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to ‘throw the baby out with the bathwater,’ so to speak…to love the homosexual, but hate his homosexuality; in a sense, it’s no greater sin than anything that separates us from God; in Jesus’ Name we pray, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 5-22-18 Confusing Questions

CLARITY

Confusing Questions

What’s Happening:  “The Pope’s recent reported remarks may give the homosexual community great encouragement, but it flies in the face of tradition. Juan Carlos Cruz, himself an alleged object of much child sex abuse in the recent brouhaha that resulted in the mass and unanimous resignation of every Bishop in Chile, said Pope Francis told him, ‘God made you like that and loves you like that’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/pope-francis-tells-gay-man-154105088.html). The LGBTQ community rejoiced.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’m familiar with LGBT (Lesbians, Bi-sexuals, Gays and Transgenders), but what is this ‘Q’?”

Biblical Response:  “‘Q’ stands for ‘Questioning’. It has been added to the list of initials because those in the homosexual community believe many go through a period when they ‘question’ their sexual identity. Of course, mandatory sex education that depicts to grade-schoolers in California (recently passed controversial legislation) LGBT’s as normative behavior might be the source of ‘Q’s. That the Pope made such remarks, though neither confirmed nor denied by the Vatican, is not the direction of Catholic catechism. ”

“Christians? I’m not saying there aren’t real Christians in the Catholic faith, but the Pope’s alleged remarks, if true, do not bear out the testimony of Scripture (as the following will indicate: Lev. 18:22; Lev. 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9; 1 Tim. 1:10…to name a few that condemn this lifestyle). Still, similar to the difference between ‘love’ and ‘like’, (there are many things my children do that I don’t like, but I still love them), I am to hate the sin and love the sinner (‘The good hate the badness of the wicked. The wicked hate the goodness of the good.’ Prov. 29:27 LB).”
