CLARITY – 9-14-20 ‘Peaceful’ Riots?

 CLARITY

‘Peaceful’ Riots?

What’s Happening: “By definition a riot is a ‘violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd’ (Google), so ‘peaceful’ riots would be oxymoronic, but that is just what organizers would say of the riots that got India student Umar Khalid arrested for demonstrations where those he allegedly started resulted in over 50 deaths. He was protesting the passage by the legislature of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which he claims is anti-Muslim and unconstitutional.  The peaceful demonstration later turned violent and police say Khalid was on of the ‘key conspirators’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/umar-khalid-india-student-leader-062536516.html). Quoting from the BBC article:; ‘The law – which critics say is anti-Muslim – sparked massive protests across India after it was passed last year. One such demonstration in Delhi turned violent and it soon took on religious overtones. The rioting continued for three days, leaving more than 50 people dead.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “He was just organizing…he shouldn’t be arrested for that…he pulled no trigger…weilded no stick.”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, and I guess those over 50 that died did so of natural causes! And he’s not being charged with murder. Besides, I wasn’t there…were you? We all have a tendency to Monday-morning-quarterback – to judge an event from the comfort of our couch…after the fact.”

“What does the Bible say? It acknowledges the emotion of anger, but reminds us of ‘self-control (Which is one of the fruit of the Spirit – Gal. 5:22):

‘Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:’ (Eph. 4:26 KJV)”

“Christians? We believe in God’s power to control our emotions (if we submit that part of us to Him). God acknowledges we are emotional creature; we’d be so bland and heartless if we weren’t; still, He expects us to yield to a different default now that His nature controls us…now that we’ve been born again (Jn. 3:7). Presumably Umar Khalid did not have that advantage.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be reflections of You in all that we do…to default to Your nature; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

CLARITY – 6-26-20 Only a Fool

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-26-20

Only a Fool

What’s Happening: “Over 100 people in northern India are dead from lightning strikes in recent days the BBC reports. This is monsoon season for them and working outside in the rain ranks as one of the most unwise activities. That is a nice way of saying foolishness breeds dangerous behavior (Eccl. 7:25). There is more than 2,000 people killed annually by lightning and you’d think people would learn…but you’d be wrong. 83 people were killed in Bihar and over 20 were killed in neighboring Uttar Pradesh. Working outside during a thunderstorm has got to be ranked with changing screens on a submarine, having a tea party with a bear, or changing a diaper on a full-grown lion…other foolish activities (https://www.yahoo.com/news/lightning-kills-more-100-northern-195516436.html). Quoting yesterday’s article: ‘The authorities have warned residents to be vigilant and stay indoors, as meteorologists forecast more bad weather.’… you think?!”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Aren’t lightning bolts God’s purview?”

Biblical Response:  “He can take a fool’s life by lightning…but He surely is not limited to that. I’m sure, there have been instances when He could have used that method to take someone’s life (of course, in 262 references to lightning in 13 versions there is no mention of it), but the Lord is Sovereign. He created each of us and has the absolute right to end any of us at any time…by any method…and that doesn’t mean we can’t do something foolish and end our own life.”

“That reminds me of another foolish activity: atheism. Here’s a great scripture on that:

‘The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” (Ps. 14:1 NASU)

“Christians?  We believe we reap what we sow (Gal. 6:7). We can play or work outside during a thunderstorm…if we are foolish. And we shouldn’t blame God for the reward of folly.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be wise in our activities, not give an angel overtime work; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-18-20 Honor Amongst Thieves

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-18-20

Honor Amongst Thieves

What’s Happening: “A disputed border area, high altitude, and an ancient weapons protocol, all contributed to a bloody (and deadly) confrontation between the Chinese and Indian militaries. Reports are beginning to filter in about the clash that occurred starting Monday, the worst fighting between the two nuclear powers since 1967, and the deadliest since 1975. Depending on whom you ask (the Chinese have been characteristically mute about it all), the Indians had 20 die, the Chinese, 43 (dead and injured). They, however, refrained from using anything but crude weaponry – clubs with nails in them, rocks wrapped in barbed wire, and fists – many Indian soldiers may have died by being tossed off a cliff or drowned in a river…or both (https://www.yahoo.com/news/fists-stones-clubs-china-indias-brutal-high-altitude-143504194.html). Quoting from the AFP article by Aishwarya Kumar and Parvaiz Buhkari: ‘There is an understanding between the nuclear-armed neighbours that despite their decades-old failure to demarcate their huge border, their troops in the disputed and inhospitable region will not use firearms.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Sounds totally barbaric to me…”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe…but what military engagement isn’t? Would it have been less barbaric than a nuclear exchange? We’re coming up on the 75th anniversary of Hiroshima (August 6, 1945), and the border clash may have been bloody, but killed no innocent civilians (bombing Hiroshima killed at least 90,000). I’m not advocating going back to the stone age or touting the sanity of a Mutally Assured Destruction (MAD)  policy, but you have to say something for handling disputes this way. Is peace, real peace, a pipe dream? Perhaps. As I’ve said before, “Peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of God” (2 Pet. 3:14).”

“Christians?  We believe in peace. But there will never be peace on earth until the Prince of Peace rules in the heart of every man (Luke 2:14). The Chinese communists don’t have a good record with border disputes (I’m thinking the South China Sea), but the Lord ultimately determines borders, anyway (Acts 17:26).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to rely on your system of justice; it may not seem fair at the time…but eventually we see Your hand; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-20-20 When It Rains, It Pours

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-20-20

When It Rains, It Pours

What’s Happening: “This Wednesday, cyclone category-4 Amphan is due to hit the coast of India.  The last time a category-4 cyclone hit India (1999 cyclone Odisha), it killed nearly 10,000 people. By itself, bad news.  Except the country also reported its highest number of new COVID-19 cases (almost 5,000) just Sunday. There was another 4,600 Monday. To date, India has reported over 100,000 cases with 3, 164 deaths..this wou;ld be bad enough, but social distancing requirements have reduced the effective maximum for evacuation centers from 500,000 to 200,000 (https://news.yahoo.com/india-hit-super-cyclone-same-111022940.html). Quoting from the Business Insider article:. ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the National Disaster Management Authority on Monday, according to The Times of India. The West Bengal government halted port operations and began evacuating people from the coast on Tuesday morning, the newspaper reported.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “They just can’t seem to catch a break….”

Biblical Response:  “Being a predominantly Hindu country, I won’t encourage them to pray. Besides, to which of their over 300,000,000  gods do I direct them? Still, I can sympathize with them (Rom. 12:15). It’s time for Christians to shine. The sick and water-soaked can have some relief if the Christians will minister to them. In fact, this can give Christians a chance to shine (Matt. 5:13-16).”

“Most people’s theology wants to blame storms, plagues, etc. on the devil …and I’m sure he’ll take credit for it. Regardless, calamity gives us an opportunity to demonstrate love and servant-leadership. This will also give us an opportunity to share the Good News…in its time…sometimes a hungry person’s stomach is growling too loud to hear your testimony.”

“Christians? We believe that true love should be borne out by actions, not just words (John 13:35; 14:11). Remember the old Christian song: ‘They’ll Know We Are Cheristians By Our Love’?”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to care, whether it’s convenient or not; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 3-27-20 Our Time to Shine

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-27-20

Our Time to Shine

What’s Happening: “India announced it had approved a 1.7 Trillion (presumably rupees – $22 Billion) emergency food program yesterday to combat rampant starvation amidst the COVID-19 crisis in their country. This stimulus package will deliver grains and lentils to 800,000,000 people, 60% of the largest democratic nation on earth. There are people losing their jobs, which, in India, does not mean difficulties paying rent, but actual survival. India’s 1.43 Billion people are 85% service folks. A Stay-at-Home order is actually devastating to them (https://www.yahoo.com/news/jobless-virus-lockdown-indias-poor-083919000.html).  Quoting from the above article: ‘Our first concern is food, not the virus,’ said Suresh Kumar, 60, a bicycle rickshaw driver in New Delhi. He said he has a family of six who rely on his normal daily earnings of 300 rupees ($4). ‘I don’t know how I will manage,’ he said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess I don’t have it that bad!”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not! We may worry about our rent or our 401-K’s, but not survival! (There, but for the grace of God, go we.) There is a story told about a mother answering her son’s questioning gaze as she gave their last bit of rice to a particularly emaciated beggar who knocked on her door: She said, ‘We may die tomorrow, but, without our food,  he will die today.’ Few people remember the Great Depression. Not since then have Americans really wondered from where the next meal was coming. We can point to the benefits of the Industrial Revolution or the Information Age…about none of which the starving man cares. As the old missionary saying goes, ‘They can’t hear you over the growling of their stomach.’ Maybe it is time to really help people, not just saying, ‘be warmed…be filled’ (James 2:16-17).”

“The coronavirus is not too unfortunate. What a great time to be alive! What an opportunity for the ‘breadbasket of the world’ (America) to show just how we feel toward those less blessed. Think of the platform that would give us if we offered food, medical break-thoughs, etc. to people the world over who are in desperate need. Of course, we couldn’t then tell them the secret to our excess – er – success. That might be politically incorrect.”

“Christians? Oh, we have much to do and say. But not as Americans. We once had a Christian Consensus…,but not anymore. As Christians, we definitely have much to offer…and hopefully, we will (1 Pet. 3:15).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, Help us to remain that ‘shining light on a hill’; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 3-20-20 There’s Justice Here and There’s Justice There

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-20-20

There’s Justice Here

And There’s Justice There

What’s Happening: “In an article released earlier today (it’s was Friday earlier in India), four convicted rapist/murderers were hanged amidst cheers and celebrations in New Delhi for the 2012 gang rape on a New Delhi bus. At the time, there was a public outcry condemning years of poor treatment of women and demanding swift justice (to have any justice in under a decade is remarkable). A fifth suspect hanged himself in prison and a sixth suspect was a minor. He served three years in a juvenile detention facility, Quoting from the Associated Press article: ‘India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Friday that justice had prevailed…’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/india-hangs-4-men-convicted-110654411.html). ‘”Together, we have to build a nation where the focus is on women empowerment, where there is emphasis on equality and opportunity,’ Modi said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Didn’t Amnesty International protest the barbaric use of the death penalty?’

Biblical Response:  “Yes, but that doesn’t make them right. And, whether the death penalty is a deterrent or not is not the final arbiter of right and wrong. Who should determine whether or not the death penalty is appropriate? Nope, not even the law, a judge, or a jury…actually, only God…and He’s already had plenty to say on the subject (Ex. 21:23; Deut. 19:21; etc.).”

“But that’s just justice here on earth (physical justice…temporal justice).  More to be feared is ultimate justice (spiritual justice…eternal justice – Luke 12:5:

‘But I will forewarn you Whom ye shall fear: Fear Him, which after He hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear Him.’ (KJV)

“Christians? Oh, we believe in ultimate, spiritual, and eternal justice. We also believe: ‘Justice makes hell necessary; mercy makes heaven possible.’ Are those four rapists/murderers in heaven or hell? That’s above my paygrade. Only God knows the heart (Acts 15:8, 1 John 3:20-21). Some of them could have repented.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to keep short accounts with You and learn to rejoice at ultimate justice; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-24-20 It’s Not How Many, But Who

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-24-20

It’s Not How Many, But Who

What’s Happening: “In what may be the largest crowd ever assembled in India (or maybe even the world), ten million people lined the street from the airport to the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad in Modi’s home state of Gujarat where Prime Minister Modi of India and President Trump of the United States greeted a capacity crowd of 100,000 earlier today. Although relations between the two countries has been cordial in the past, this visit may yield a trade deal Trump promises to be “very very major –among the biggest ever – trade deals” (https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-set-biggest-rally-crowd-020303212.html).  ‘Despite all the differences, the ratcheting up of diplomatic and military attention to strategies that could counter Chinese expansionism is something that’s been pretty consistent,’ said Milan Vaishnav,  the head of the South Asia program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wow! That’s a ‘huge’ crowd, by anybody’s standard!”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, but it’s not how many, but Who. The problem with popularity…it’s fickle. You are popular one day…the crowds cheer you…they try to make you King (Matt. 14:14-21; Jn, 6:15)…then they crucify you (Mk. 15:13-20). Ask Jesus? Popularity is not all goodness and light. Perhaps that’s why the Savior got away to Himself (the last part of Jn. 6:15). Jesus preferred his twelve (or even just His three: Peter, James and John – witnesses to the Transfiguration.-.Matt. 17:1-5). Smaller crowd, but crucial audience. Even those guys pale in significance to God Himself, Who, by the way, is an eye-witness to every event (Ps. 139).”

“Christians? We know how untrustworthy man can be. In his fallen state (Gen. 3), he is never to be trusted (Is. 53:6; Ps. 118:8; Jer. 17:5). God, on the other hand, is faithful and true (Jer. 42:5: Rev. 19:11). While crowds may please the flesh, it’s what pleases the spirit and soul of man that’s more important (John 12:43).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to keep our eyes focused on Your approval, not on the fickle approval of men; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-18-19 On the Rise…No Surprise

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-18-19

On the Rise…No Surprise

What’s Happening: “Open Doors, an NGO that keeps track of deaths proven to be strictly for religious reasons, reports a huge increase in the level of persecution of Christians – up 13.9% in just one year – mostly in Nigeria. Although now there’s almost daily fear in India and 1 in 3 Asian Christians experience severe persecution, China actually outlawed Christianity (https://www.yahoo.com/news/one-three-christians-asia-faces-persecution-report-004259377.html). ‘Africa has become the home of violence against Christians,’ claims Michel Varton, president of Open Doors France.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Not being a Christian, how does that affect me?”

Biblical Response:  “Actually, it should trouble everyone. Anytime any group, religious or otherwise, is singled out for punishment just because they believe differently, the freedom of all is in jeopardy. For Christians, this may not be new (John 15:18), but it’s still should be worrisome for everyone.”

“Christians? Although Christianity will prevail (if, as Christians believe, it is inherently superior) as the only real solution to Man’s problems (read the Sermon on the Mount” – Matt. 5,6,7), it will only happen as religion is allowed to have free expression.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give our persecuted brethren the grace to withstand the onslaughts of the enemy; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
