CLARITY – 12-12-18 Profitability Not the Measure

CLARITY

Profitability Not the Measure

What’s Happening: “Google, which is openly and admittedly anti-Christian, has recently approved  ‘Smart Pakem,’ an app for outing Xenophobes toward Muslims, in all countries where Sharia law is legal. Indonesia, which reports as many as 207 Million Muslims, launched this app last month. Whatever happened to free speech? Oh, I see, it’s not profitable (https://steadfastandloyal.com/social-issues/approves-app-that-allows-to-report-blasphemy/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=subscriber_id:1583395&utm_campaign=WikiLeaks%20vs%20The%20Democratic%20National%20Committee%20Is%20Going%20To%20be%20HUGE). Isn’t that hypocritical? So? Apparently profitability determines right and wrong.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Get with the times.”

Biblical Response:  “Just because something is contemporary…or doable…or profitable…doesn’t make it right. A lot of things are possible, but that doesn’t make them recommendable. Apparently Google has opted for profitability as the final arbiter of morality. It is expedient to the company’s bottom line, so it must be pursued. This kind of philosophy will not serve them…or their shareholders…or us…well. Oh sure, it might be beneficial in the short term, but not ultimately.”

“Christians? What is our final arbiter? Conscience? No, that is deceitful (Isaiah 53:6). A man will do what seems right in his own eyes. The leading of God? If it was truly God…however, many have said they were led of God,…to justify despicable things! The only faithful arbiter is the inerrant Word of God. Not verses isolated from historical or circumstantial context, but an original-language rendering that takes those realities into account. His leading will never violate His Word. And is therefore simple, direct, and clear.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may we be ever vigilant when it come to supporting activities that seem right…and use the right measuring line when it comes to judging;; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-11-18 Update

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-11-18

Update

What’s Happening: “Now the death toll (previously reported in CLARITY blogs of 9/29 and 10/4 – subdeo.com/) has risen to 2,045. The earthquake(s) and subsequent tsunami have displaced 82,000 people and damaged or destroyed 67,000 homes. I say quakes because they continue to hit the “Ring of Fire” islands of Indonesia with new quakes of 6.0 or higher, hitting Bali and Java recently.  Much of the world was focused on the Kavanaugh hearings or the progress Pompeo has made in North Korea lately, but all tragedy, like politics, is local (https://www.yahoo.com/news/indonesia-aftermath-devastating-earthquake-tsunami-slideshow-wp-190254814.html). One reaction was Kingkhan’s: …‘how can you try and help people who sabotage their own emergency equipment(?)’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Things are rough all over!”

Biblical Response:  “True…still, that doesn’t reduce our responsibility to be merciful (Rom. 12:15; James 2:16). The trick is, as the saying goes, to ‘walk a mile in his moccasins.’ Since I experienced the devastation and loss o life of a tornado on my own property in 2011, I have been particularly merciful (I highly recommend Samaritan’s Purse as a relief organization).

“Christians? It’s primarily our responsibility. I’m all for the Red Cross (was even on a board once), but their message of the Gospel depends more on their volunteers than the organization as a whole. Not so with Samaritan’s Purse…or World Vision, YWAM, etc. I REALLY want to help…long-term…eternally. Don’t you?

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to give true help, not just a band-aid or temporal help; help us to point the way, eternally; earthquakes, tsunamis and tornadoes come…after all, we live in a fallen world…but there is hope; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-4-18 It Gets Worse

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-4-18

It Gets Worse

What’s Happening: “The death toll in the Indonesian quake and subsequent tsunami (the subject of 9-29’s CLARITY) has gone from 384 about a week ago to over 1,400…and with the latest volcanic eruption and aftershocks (some of them registering as high as 6.0) the toll might go even higher. No one has yet heard from inhabitants of Donggala, near the epicenter of the initial quake, and the Red Cross thinks that is very worrying (https://www.npr.org/2018/10/02/653541283/in-indonesia-aftershocks-and-uncertainty-remain-after-deadly-earthquake). ‘There are more than 300,000 people living there. This is already a tragedy, but it could get much worse,’ said Jan Gelfand, head of an international relief organization.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It’s not the end of the world…is it?”

Biblical Response:  “I doubt it…though I’m sure there are some in Indonesia that might beg to differ…at least it’s the end for 1,400. Something we must keep in mind: although all tragedy is local, so is all relief. People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”

“Christians? What an opportunity! Of course, we’re shattered at the large loss of life and property. But this is our opportunity to show just how much we care. If every church just gave $1000 the total would be staggering (83, 996 X 1000 = almost 84 million dollars!…and that’s just in America!) If help is not given, we have much over which to repent. Our myopic view of what is important (with all the brouhaha over Kavanaugh and the midterm elections) needs to be re-examined (James 2:15-17).

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to put the right emphasis on what’s important…not that our problems aren’t significant…but they pale by comparison; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-29-18 Meanwhile in Indonesia

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-29-18

Meanwhile in Indonesia

What’s Happening: “Most people tuning in the Ford/ Kavanaugh circus missed the fact that an earthquake (magnitude 7.5) and a tsunami (6 meter waves) stuck Sulawesi, Indonesia, and immediately killed 384. I said “immediately” because the death toll is likely to rise (https://www.yahoo.com/news/strong-quake-tsunami-indonesias-sulawesi-island-kill-least-011405645.html).  ‘We’re now getting limited communications about the destruction in Palu City, but we have heard nothing from Donggala and this is extremely worrying. There are more than 300,000 people living there,’ said the Red Cross.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “The Ford/Kavanaugh hearings may be earthquakes/tsunamis of our own.”

Biblical Response:  “Anyone who knows the significance of what went on in Washington yesterday will probably agree with you, That doesn’t lessen the deaths in Indonesia. Both places were rocked, but the Indonesian Islands sit directly on an active volcanic zone: “The Ring of Fire”…of course, that also could be said of the partisanship in D.C. “

“Christians? We’re not unfamiliar with accusation, innuendo, or upheaval (Acts 4:1-17). And, we are told to commiserate with those who suffer (Rom. 12:15). We need to be soothers, not adding to the misery of others…in either disturbance.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to be unwitting participants…either by our lack of focus…nor in our narcissism; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-25-18 The Loneliest Job

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-25-18

The Loneliest Job

What’s Happening: “18-year-old Aldi Novel Adilang, was adrift for 49 days before he was rescued by a Panamanian-flagged vessel off Guam having floated off his moorings over 1,000 miles away. His job as a lamplighter on a floating shack designed to attract fish with a light may be the loneliest task on the planet. He gets paid by his Indonesian employer just $130/month (https://www.yahoo.com/news/indonesian-teenager-rescued-drifting-7-weeks-sea-092843308.html). He said he survived on fish and salt water wringed from wet clothes when his supplies ran out. This is the third time this season his raft has broken its moorings.

Knee-Jerk Response:  “This is where you learn to talk to yourself or go crazy.”

Biblical Response:  “Indeed, one might wonder at the boy’s sanity for even taking the job in the first place! I guess it depends on your options…or your destiny. The thought that Christ CHOSE to go o the cross for us (Luke 22:42) makes many question His sanity…or His power. The only reason His act is not considered suicide (he submitted to his capture even healing one of his captors – John 18:10), is that He had the right to lay down His life (John 10:18).”

“Christians? Being a lamplighter might indeed be the loneliest job on earth (though we might argue we are all called to be Lamplighters),but dying for Mankind’s sin is a lonely task, too (Matt. 2:55-56).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, let us take solace in the fact that You will supply sufficient grace for the task at hand…with the calling comes the strength; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 8-7-18 Lombok Lamblasted

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-7-18

Lombok Lambasted

What’s Happening:  “The tectonic plates beneath Indonesia have shifted again making yesterday’s 6.9 quake centered in the Lombok region one of the century’s six greatest quakes in this area (anything above 6.5). Immediate death tolls were about 100, but more than 20,000 were affected. The devastation and homelessness will be extensive (from a report by Trevor Nace) (https://www.forbes.com/sites/trevornace/2018/08/06/indonesia-magnitude-6-9-earthquake-leaves-lombok-in-rubble-and-thousands-without-homes/#6aff33713327).  Trevor Nace is a PhD geologist, founder of Science Trends, Forbes contributor, and explorer.

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Indonesia is half a world away – I’ve got my own problems!”

Biblical Response:  “Don’t we all…still, concern with other people’s problems often puts ours in perspective. We all have a tendency to be a bit myopic…our own problems loom large to us because we’re too close to them. I know all tragedy is local…but only because we make it so. We reduce our own difficulties by identifying with the difficulties of others.”

Christians? Of course, prayer is important (Phil. 4:6)…and easier when we identify with the plight of others (Rom. 12:15), but we should also give (Luke 6;:38). I have facilitated that by giving you the following link to World Vision Indonesian Earthquake Relief Fund . Please give now to help meet the urgent needs of earthquake survivors.

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help me to be sympathetic to others’ needs…I sure need You to be sympathetic to mine; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
