Maybe It’s Time We Apologized

What’s Happening: “Police in Metz, France (in the eastern part of the country) shot and wounded in the thigh yesterday a man who shouted ‘Allahu akbar’ (‘God is greatest’) while attacking them with a knife. Metz was the site of another knife attack two days ago in which one died and two were wounded (the attacker was shot dead). Paris, France has been the choice of many terrorist killings in recent years – 130 have died there in the deadliest attacks since World War II (https://www.yahoo.com/news/french-police-shoot-wound-knifeman-172509983.html). French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said, ‘I praise the quick thinking of the @PoliceNat57 (Moselle police force), which intervened to apprehend the individual. A probe is underway to determine the precise motivation and circumstances behind the act,’ That should be a short investigation. It seems obvious that Islamic terrorism is the motivation.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “How come we don’t get these attacks in New York?”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe it’s that we have a stricter immigration policy…or maybe it’s the NYPD…or that we are farther from Mecca…or a combination of the three… I don’t know. Of course, my issue is a bit different. I have no argument with the statement that”: ‘God is greatest,’ But which God? Sure, the terrorist shouted: ‘Allahu akbar’, which means he thinks Allah is God. Muhammed Ali (the famous boxer who shouted: ‘I am the greatest’ – himself a Muslim) and I would beg to differ (of course, maybe he was just saying that he has the greatest boxer).”

“The Scripture says that we can tell a tree by its fruit (Matt. 12:33). Islamic terrorism has killed many in the name of Allah. Islamic jihadists would then be quick to point out the Crusades and say we’ve also killed many…and they are right. Wrongheaded zeal is at least partly to blame for the rampage that occurred a millennium ago. Besides, conversions at the point of a sword are, at best, less sincere. Maybe it’s time we Christians apologized.”

“Christians? We believe Jehovah is God (Joshua 22:34; Psalm 118:27; I Kings 8:60, 18:21) and Jesus is His Son (Mk. 1:1, John 20:31, etc. – there are literally dozens of references), and that belief in Him is what makes you a Christian (Acts 16:31). But we don’t believe that anyone should be coerced into belief. You should choose Jesus (and, by so doing, choose Jehovah), but your choice should be free (Josh. 24:15 and John 8:32 and John 14:6). There is salvation in no other Name (Acts 4:12)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to get so wrapped up in our desire for demonstrating allegiance to You that we lose sight of Your overriding message of love; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

Laboring in Vain

What’s Happening: “Appropriately, George Will writes a Memorial Day article for the National Review that deals with why our policy in Iran is wrongheaded. While I agree, it is not for the same reasons. He fears a unilateral action by a White House that likes to counterpunch and (rightfully) sees regime change as a good and necessary thing….conversion at the point of a sword, however, ultimately won’t work…like the Crusades, it’s medieval!  (https://www.yahoo.com/news/blame-america-disturbing-iran-policy-093036906.html).  Mr. Will’s problems with the administration are mostly Constitutional, mine are ideological. Quoting from the article: ‘Many conservatives who preen as ‘originalists’ when construing all the Constitution’s provisions other than the one pertaining to war powers are unimpressed by the Framers’ intention that Congress should be involved in initiating military force in situations other than repelling sudden attacks.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Why tie the President’s hands? He seems to be doing well with other things.”

Biblical Response:  “Doing well with the economy is one thing, and our military is obviously  superior, but being successful in the short run is not what we should be after. The Crusades had noble intentions…just not noble methods. And nothing but regime change will ever make a difference long-term. But it must be voluntary regime change, not forced regime change. That’s why victory on the battlefield in Iraq or Afghanistan has not (nor ever will) led to voluntary regime change. It’s one thing to win over the body…quite another to win over the heart. Apparently, MacArthur understood that. He called for the Christian mission organizations of the world to send immediately 30,000 missionaries to Japan (he was made President of Japan at the close of WWII). Their hearts swelled up the size of buckshot and they sent 3.”

“Christians? Why wait until some General calls. We’ve already been sent (Mark 16:15). Giving the heart makes every other godly act possible.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to have leaders who will play their roles…so that You can play Yours;in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Shedding Innocent Blood Is Wrong…Period!

What’s Happening: “Three were killed and at least twenty were injured at the bombing yesterday at a mosque in Kabul (Afghanistan). Among the dead was Muslim cleric Samiullah Raihan, who was leading prayers in the Sunni Al-Taqwa mosque. Although no one has claimed responsibility, it is not uncommon for warring factions of Muslims to take matters into their own hands (https://www.yahoo.com/news/bomb-kills-least-one-during-friday-prayers-mosque-094010470.html). Quoting from the Reuters article: ‘Firdaws Faramarz, a police spokesman, said explosives were apparently placed near the altar of the Al-Taqwa mosque, a place used by the mosque leader to initiate the prayers.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “If Muslims want to kill Muslims, more power to ‘em!”

Biblical Response:  “That sentiment is why jihad recruiting is easy and evangelism efforts among Muslim communities is hard. The ‘Christian’ West (or should I say the post-Christian West? – many churches are not well populated…except for CHRINOs – CHRistians In Name Only). I know there’s a tendency to fear the unfamiliar and Muslim terrorism has fanned ideological bias, but if we truly believe in Christianity’s inherent superiority, we won’t be cheering on these innocent deaths (Ex. 20:13)…or taking matters into our own hands, either. God is quite capable of sorting nations and territories out (Acts 17:26).”

“Christians? They won’t know we are Christian by our hate, but by our love (Jn. 13:35). Rather, we should weep for those who weep (Rom. 12:15). A little kindness and compassion would go much further than judgmentalism and vengeance.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to love unconditionally and see every non-Christian as a potential future family member; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 3-7-19 The Opposite of Anti-

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-7-19

The Opposite of Anti-

What’s Happening: “The Congressional brouhaha that ensued after Democrat Congresswoman Ilhan Omar made her ‘foreign allegiance’ remark was incredible. First, it looked like a resolution condemning anti-Semitism was going to be introduced, then one condemning anti-Semitism and mentioning specifically Congresswoman Omar, then no resolution at all (https://www.yahoo.com/news/asked-ilhan-omar-democrats-turn-230059958.html). ‘When prominent people use anti-Semitic rhetoric, it greenlights more of it. That’s why we’ve called out elected officials in both parties when they spew hate. Congress must send a clear, unambiguous message: there is no place for anti-Semitism in the U.S.,’said Anti-Defamation League spokesman Jonathan Greenblatt.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Surely, no one still speaks against the Jews as a people!”

Biblical Response:  “Where have you been? Of course they still do…or haven’t you been paying attention to Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and the majority of the Muslim world? To chant ‘death to Israel’ is not being friendly to your nemesis, by any stretch of the imagination! Aren’t all -isms reprehensible? Perhaps…sincere belief in anything is no indication of its veracity (sorry AOC).”

“Christians? There are actions that God hates (Deut. 16:22; Prov. 20:10, 23), but not peoples. He died for all (now all may not accept that gift…but that doesn’t mean He only laid down His life for some). His attitude toward those who accept His love? It’s the opposite of anti-. It’s favor.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to have Your arms-open-wide attitude toward all people, for that is how You died; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-8-19 Surprised

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-8-19

Surprised

What’s Happening: “When Dutch former far-right activist Joram van Klaveren converted from Christianity to Islam (he had formerly labeled the Quran ‘poison’) it made waves. Of course, he was studying Islam at the time, ostensibly to write an expose’ of the religion. Now he is releasing a book entitled: ‘Apostate: From Christianity to Islam in the Time of Secular Terror.’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/former-far-activist-called-quran-171627137.html). ‘”It feels a bit like a religious homecoming for me,’ van Klaveren said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’m happy for him. He has found what is meaningful for him.”

Biblical Response:  “That would be great if what you believe about God was just a matter of opinion…if sincerity was the measure of truth. Unfortunately, for him and 19 terrorists who flew planes into buildings (and, thankfully, a Pennsylvania countryside) and were convinced that 72 virgins awaited, it’s not. There is what you think is going to happen…and, in fact, what really happens. It’s not who has the best argument that wins out in the end…regardless of whether it’s Mohammed, or Confucius, or Ghandi, or Stephen J. Hawking… or even Christ. Truth is determined by God Himself. That Christ is right is entirely beside the point.”

“Christians? We believe in absolute truth. How else can the ‘truth set you free’(John 8:32)? If the truth sets you free, lies enslave. We need to pray for the soul of this man…and all similarly deceived. Admitting you’ve been led astray sure beats being surprised,”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we do pray for Joram. May he find the absolute truth…before it’s too late; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 11-15-18 Faith Under Fire

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 11-15-18

Faith Under Fire

What’s Happening: “The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) may be 25 years old, but some think times have changed so much that efforts to repeal it might keep it from seeing its 26th birthday. The bill to repeal (to be introduced in the next Congress) already has 172 co-sponsors, all Democrats (https://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=WA18K21&f=WU18K07). ‘In short, an explicit Constitutional right would be declared less important than other claims never mentioned in the Constitution and often not even legislated by elected officials,’ Ernest Istook said in a column for the Washington Examiner.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “No one has a corner on who is God.”

Biblical Response:  “Really? Christians, Hindu, Muslims and others might disagree…and the First Amendment to the U. S. Constitution was added to give them the freedom to express that. To apply an old familiar phrase, ‘We’ve come a long way, baby’… but not necessarily in a good direction. Today’s secularism promises to release us from old moral codes, but really imprisons us with a mandated religion of its own: Secular Humanism. I thought the universal depravity of Man made that argument moot. Don’t agree with the concept that Man is bad? What are all those prisons for?”

Christians? We aren’t advocating as American Christians that only Jesus should be allowed in our culture. We are not for mandating any state religion. We just happen to believe we don’t need mandated support. Man, free (John 8:32) to choose what God he will serve, will choose Jehovah. Don’t we believe in the superiority of Christianity? Of course, and ‘the cream will rise to the top’…if I can use a old farming phrase.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to see through attempts at legislating You out (or into) our society; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-6-18 No Mystery to Me

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-6-18

No Mystery to Me

What’s Happening:  “The YouTube shooter is a perpetrator seeking a motive – not that there aren’t plenty willing to assign one. Nasim Najafi Aghdam was from Iran…seems obvious, doesn’t it? Islamic terrorism…except for one thing…she’s not a Muslim. Some have suggested (without offering proof) that she was an illegal immigrant or a robot or a transgender woman or a woman out to prove women are capable of gun violence, too…anything that fits their narrative (https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/wp/2018/04/05/the-youtube-shooter-fits-the-most-important-narrative-of-all/?utm_term=.b55b6b1a1667). Could it be that she was just an evil person? Of course, you’d have to admit first that evil exists…and that doesn’t fit the narrative, either.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What are you saying? That good and evil exist?!”

Biblical Response:  “YES! And you should be scared…very scared! Actually, I’ve got good news and bad news. First, the bad news: evil exists and it is powerful. Now, the good news: God also exists, He’s good, and He’s more powerful! I don’t know what was going through Nasim’s mind. Sure, she was demented, No one commits such a heinous act when they are in their right mind. But what was her primary motivation? Vengeance against a company that she perceived had done her wrong? Perhaps. (One thing’s for sure, it wasn’t the gun that made her do it – or a car, a truck, or a nerve agent? Those are only means…what was her motive?) Could it be that she was being influenced more by the bad news than the good news?”

“Christians? We all want to point the finger at something…an ideology, at some means, or at society in general. But there’s a mirror in front of us (James 1:23). It’s called the Word of God. That which tells us of a standard by which all actions are to be judged, recommends a course of action we seldom take…that of looking at the other fingers pointed back at us, We may not have pulled the trigger, or have steered the wheel, or released the gas…but we all have a responsibility of overcoming evil with good (Rom. 12:1).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we need Your help in getting the Good News out to others…and in overcoming evil with good; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 2-21-18 Last Hope

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-21-18

Last Hope

What’s Happening:  “In a ‘State of Hungary’ speech from Budapest,  President of Hungary Viktor Orban called Christianity Europe’s last hope. He was, no doubt, reacting to the loose immigration policies of France, Belgium and Germany as Islam slowly takes over demographically (https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2018-02-18/hungarian-leader-calls-christianity-europes-last-hope?platform=hootsuite). Hungary may seem insignificant and Orban’s voice small, but global forces of tolerance and self-determination seem to be governing in the U.N. and almost everywhere.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “And I don’t even own a burka!”

Biblical Response:  “There are a whole lot of things that will change (other than clothing) if we have a world with an Islamic consensus (owning clothing in vogue with the culture will be the least of your worries).. Western civilization was built on a Christian consensus (granted, there are assumptions that are not profitable for individual evangelism, but there are cultural advances that are its result, too). The lie that makes all this possible is that allah and Jehovah are just different names for the same God.”

“Christians? If “the truth will set you free” (John 8:32), a lie will enslave you. Don’t think there’s any difference between allah and Jehovah? You obviously haven’t read the Koran or studied history. Sure, we’ve made mistakes…sometimes glaring ones (the Crusades come to mind), but much good has been done, too (hospitals, schools, and feeding programs, etc.). As the bumper sticker says, “Christians aren’t perfect, just forgiven.” Besides, Mohammed didn’t rise from the dead, Jesus did. I have no doubt Christianity will win out in the end, I just hope we don’t have centuries of repression and domination to overcome.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may Viktor’s plea be heard and heeded…before it’s too late; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
