CLARITY – 8-13-20 A Little Perspective Please

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-13-20

A Little Perspective Please

What’s Happening: “Wednesday, Israel struck Hamas sites in Gaza over fire balloons they unleashed across the border Tuesday. Although over 60 fires were reported, there were no casualties. Hamas has been using kites and balloons for years to attack Israel who has been at war three times with Hamas since 2008 and often has skirmishes, border crossing closures, and other retaliations in response. Tanks, attack helicopters and jets were used in the retaliatory attack yesterday and some launch sites were destroyed…this is situation normal for a region that has been under siege since 2007 (https://www.yahoo.com/news/israel-strikes-hamas-positions-gaza-054549181.html). Quoting from the AFP article by Said Khatib: ‘Explosives tied to balloons and kites first emerged as a weapon in Gaza during intense protests in 2018, when the makeshift devices drifted across the border daily, causing thousands of fires in Israeli farms and communities.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So you’re saying that now would not be a good time to visit Israel, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “With COVID-19, restricted air travel, mandatory quarantines…now add in unrest in Israel…probably not (though there really hasn’t been a ‘safe’ time in decades). Of course, we talk today about safety as if it were our number one priority (I’m thinking about our over-reaction to a smalltime virus – see blog of 6-29-20). I agree, one death is too many, but we lost in excess of 55,000 in VietNam and millions in WWII. Let’s get a little perspective and not make a HUGE deal over this. Sure, for the families of those who’ve lost loved ones, it is quite tragic. Still, while I’m all for caution, over-reaction can be mostly political. As the Scriptures warn, ‘fear hath torment’ (1 John 4:18).”

“Christians? We believe in not making an unnecessary big deal over temporal life. It’s eternal life we should be more concerned with. Read Jesus’ reference to a local tragedy to get His sense of balance:

‘And Jesus said to them, ‘Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate? I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.’ Luke 13:2-3 NASU)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to view things increasingly from Your perspective and have a more balanced approach; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-7-20 Together

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-7-20

Together

What’s Happening: “After a contentious 17-month period, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Gantz can form  a government as equal partners, even though Netanyahu remains under indictment. After three inconclusive elections in less than a year failed to give a clear majority in the Knesset (Israel’s parliament), Gantz relented to avoid a fourth election amid the coronavirus crisis. Netanyahu will retain his title as Prime Minister for eighteen months while Gantz will be designated Premiers; then, the two will switch places. During his leadership, Netanyahu has promised to pursue annexation of the West Bank, with its dozens of Israeli settlements…rest assured the Palestinians are not too  happy (https://news.yahoo.com/supreme-court-israels-netanyahu-may-202250912.html).Quting the Associated Press article: ‘Over two days this week, the court looked at two questions: whether an indicted politician can be given authority to form a new government, and whether the power-sharing deal — which includes new legislation — was legal.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess a shared deal is better than no deal.”

Biblical Response:  “Probably. Provided the necessary legislation passes, and there doesn’t seem to be any reason for it not to…though I will say that Netanyahu might be taking advantage of COVID-19 to annex while Trump is in office (taking back only what God gave them in the first place, in indisputable references throughout the Old Testament – from Abraham to Moses and beyond – from Genesis to 2 Chronicles). If those references are not enough, go to Acts 17:26. Is it God’s to give? Glad you asked (read: Ex. 19:5).”

“All this is not to say whether the alleged fraud occurred or not. I don’t know. I wasn’t there. What I do know are two things; 1) Division leads to destruction, so a united government may produce progress (Luke 11:17) and 2.) The truth will eventually come out (Numbers 32:23).”

“Christians? We believe in unity and honesty (see the scriptures, above), Besides, to quote Isaiah 55:8-9:

‘This plan of mine is not what you would work out, neither are my thoughts the same as yours!  For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than yours, and my thoughts than yours.’ (LB)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us pray in the Spirit when we don’t know how to pray; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Bonus CLARITY – About 974 B.C. Sincerity is NOT the Test of Truth

Bonus CLARITY

A Biblical Response to ‘Current’ Events – About 974 B.C.

Sincerity is NOT the Test of Truth

What’s Happening: “Not taking the advice of his elders, but listening to other young men with whom he was raised, Jeroboam, son of King Solomon, is forced to split up the kingdom. Now Judah and Benjamin will separate from the rest of Israel and Rehoboam, Jeroboam’s brother, will rule them (read the story in 1 Kings 11-13). A man of God shows up (his name is never mentioned, but he speaks with the authority of an anointed prophet) to confront Jeroboam’s pagan ways: while he is sacrificing on a pagan altar of golden calves which he fashioned. With the man of God’s pronouncement, the altar splits and ashes pour out.  Jeroboam stretches out his hand toward the unnamed man of God who has pronounced calamity upon him and says ‘Seize him!’His outstretched arm instantly freezes in place and he cannot withdraw it, Jeroboam then begs for the man of God to pray to his God for his arm to be restored. He does, and it is, and then Jeroboam tries to gain favor with the man of God by offering him food and drink…I’ll let you read the rest of the story…and its surprise ending (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Kings+11%3A1&version=TLB)”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “But Jeroboam was so sincere. Doesn’t that count for something?”

Biblical Response:  “Not if you’re sincerely wrong! There were 19 men who flew planes into buildings on September 11, 2001 sincerely believing 72 virgins awaited them in heaven…ask them how much sincerity matters to the truth. People who believe that the only truth that matters is their truth, are in for a rude awakening, There is only one Truth (John 14:6). As another scripture goes I love to quote;

‘You can’t heal a wound by saying it’s not there!’ (Jer, 6:14 LB)”

“Christians? We believe in truth, and its ability to set free (John 8:32), but sincerity is not truth’s proof. As it also says:

Truth stands the test of time; lies are soon exposed.’ (Prov. 12:19 LB).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to see Your signature on those things we are to believe; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 8-16-19 It’s the Law

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -8-16-19

It’s the Law

What’s Happening: “Though AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D., NY) disagreed vocally, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.) and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) were both barred by the government of Israel from the country, including a planned visit to Palestinian cities on the West Bank, Thursday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was only obeying the law and both Muslim Representatives had expressed hatred for Jews and Israel (https://www.yahoo.com/news/israel-ban-omar-tlaib-reactions-200932835.html). ‘There is no country in the world that respects the U.S. and the U.S. Congress more than the State of Israel. As a vibrant and free democracy, Israel is open to any critic and criticism, with one exception: Israel’s law prohibits the entry of people who call and operate to boycott Israel,’ Netanyahu’s statement read.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What right does an alleged democracy have to barr Muslims from entry?”

Biblical Response:  “Actually, every right…they have a prior obligation to protect their citizens. You might ask what harm two women could do? (google women terrorists sometime – your next question might be: ‘Are you calling them terrorists?!’ – a brief review of their anti-semitic comments will yield disturbing results – you be the judge – there are those who wield weapons and those who wield words). Netanyahu might be likened to a watchman on the wall (Is. 21:6). He bears a responsibility for those he warns (Ezek. 3:18).”

“Christians? Deciding who gets into heaven is way above our paygrade, but no one will deny the momentousness (is that a word?) of the decision. Imagine someone who wants to do harm in heaven!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to tone down the rhetoric and realizing the importance of decisions made, keep our leaders in prayer; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-29-19 An Eye for an Eye or Vengeance?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -5-29-19

Eye for an Eye or Vengeance?

What’s Happening: “An Israeli missile was fired at a Syrian anti-aircraft launcher that had earlier fired and missed a IDF jet, wounding three Syrian soldiers. The Syrians protested, of course, but the Israelis said it was done in retaliation. The missile was apparently fired from the Golan Heights (which was annexed by Israel) and targeted Tel al-Shaar in Quneitra (https://www.yahoo.com/news/israeli-missile-hits-quneitra-syria-reports-casualties-193239631.html). ‘An Israeli missile targeted Tel al-Shaar in Quneitra,’ said Syrian news, adding a ‘military vehicle was targeted and there are wounded.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Doesn’t Israel have a right to defend itself?”

Biblical Response:  “I’m with you…of course it does, but there are some that would argue this violates Romans 12:19 (‘Vengeance is mine. I will repay.’). Maybe if the missile strike was elsewhere, Targeting the very launcher that fired at it means it was clearly defensive, Yeah, but what about ‘love your enemies’ (from Matthew 5:44-45)? That may be above my paygrade (only God knows the heart – 1 Kings 8:39). I don’t know what the motivation was. Surely, on a lower order, the soldiers were only doing what they were told. Higher up…I don’t know. Perhaps managing collateral damages could be construed as an act of mercy.

“Christians? Trying to fight an ethical war is difficult, at best. While some wars are of God (1 Chron. 5:22), it is just one tool in his arsenal to effect change (Acts 17:26). Then there’s the scripture that says ‘the weapons of our warfare are not carnal’ (2 Cor. 10:4). The conclusion of the matter is probably that God allows some things because He will not get in the way of free will. Of course there’s Rom. 8:28, too.

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give those who make life-and-death decisions an anointing for wisdom, not just a good ‘justifier;’ in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-13-19 It’s Even Simpler Than That

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-13-19

It’s Even Simpler Than That

What’s Happening: “Has Dem. Congresswoman (and Freshman from MN)) Omar got it wrong?! She was just being her usual Muslim self when she tweeted anti-Semitic comments on Twitter, and blamed the American Israel Public Affair Committee (AIPAC) lobby for its monetary support. This got immediate and nearly universal condemnation from her own party colleagues and a call for an apology. She complied, but Trump still called for her resignation from Congress or at least from her Foreign Affair Committee appointment (https://www.yahoo.com/news/rep-ilhan-omars-controversial-tweet-031242777.html). There are a plethora of comments on the link, and the last one in Haaretz comes closest to the motives behind America’s support of Israel, but laying all that aside, God’s motives for favoring Israel go back even further than contemporary politics presumes.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Her comments were offensive!”

Biblical Response:  “True, and maybe she should resign…and maybe lobbies are too influential…and maybe Palestinian terrorists should be more universally condemned…but all that misses the point I’m trying to make. My point? God is simply honoring a promise he made to Abraham thousands of years ago (Gen 12:3).  The only qualification I see on His promise is that we be a blessing.”

“Christians? Who is more of a true Jew than a real Christian? (Rom. 2:29) The day Christians in America abandon Israel, the favor we enjoy from God for supporting Israel will vanish.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to never forget the apple of your eye…may they truly come to know Jesus as their Messiah; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-28-19 Missing?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-28-19

Missing?

What’s Happening: “The death toll in the wake of the collapse of Dam #6 in Brumadinho, Brazil has risen to 58, with over 300 still reported as missing, Sunday. The dam held back the iron ore mining waste of a mine operated by Vale, a Brazilian company. Search for the missing has resumed after it was called off for fear of another dam collapsing. The other dam was owned by the same company…it has now been declared as safe (https://www.yahoo.com/news/latest-israeli-searchers-help-brazil-dam-collapse-092504619.html) Rescue teams as far away as Israel have come to locals’ aid.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “That’s down in Brazil…not my problem.”

Biblical Response:  “It might not be ‘your’ problem, but you sure would be singing a different tune if it was your house being buried by mud. Like has been said before, ‘all tragedy is local.’ Let me add to the list of altruisms: ‘everyone experiences a tragedy sometime.’ If it isn’t mud, it’s a tornado (mine, in 2011). If not a tornado, it’s sickness (2 brainstem strokes in 2009). If not sickness, it’s the death of a loved one (I preached my father’s funeral in 1994). If not the death of a loved one, it’s divorce in your family…or a hurricane…or a bankruptcy or whatever (BTW, I’ve been through all the aforementioned). God is still God and I am not He.  By the way, He knows where those ‘missing’ are…so I guess they aren’t missing to Him..”

“Christians? We are called to have a different perspective…about tragedy and time. First: tragedy. We are to ‘weep with those who weep’ ((Rom. 12:15). But we are not to show our empathy in tears only. Ours must be more practical than that (James 2:16-17)

Concerning time? We must remember the following formula to put things in their proper perspective: 120 (Gen. 6:3) /eternity= life in perspective. We all are here for only the blink of an eye (Is. 40:7).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, everyone under the age of 30 thinks they are going to live forever. Help us to view life in perspective; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-2-18 More to Come

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-2-18

More to Come

What’s Happening: “Strikes over Israel celebrating its new Nation-State Law, passed by the Knesset in July of this year, are not the last of a reaction to a wave of religious nationalism that is sweeping across the world. (https://www.yahoo.com/news/palestinians-strike-against-israels-jewish-nation-law-102126675.html). Its counterpart, religious syncretism, the belief that all religions hold a piece of the truth – that no religion or faith has a corner on the truth-market (http://www.religioustolerance.org/tomek22.htm), is a popularly held feeling and a great contributor to a secular pluralism that may be the product of today’s political correctness. This may be just the First Act in a great play.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Those are just big words for ‘let’s all get along.’”

Biblical Response:  “Religious syncretism and secular pluralism may be big words, but they describe a pervasive sentiment sweeping this world of partisanship. People may get so weary of fights between the left and the right that they welcome a peace that accepts all views as equally valid – you can believe anything as long as you sincerely believe it. This tolerance may sound good on its face – it’s just unbiblical. Soon, some may find that believing in everything is really believing in nothing.”

“Christians? We have a very dogmatic religion. To think that you have the ONLY truth (John 14:6; Acts 4:12) may seem arrogant…but it’s true. I understand Trump’s attitude of American superiority (America first), though it may be a faith statement. Christianity is definitely a superior faith,..it may be true…but it’s unpopular…it’s just too intolerant for many.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us ‘condescend to men of low estate’ (Rom. 12:16)…even when no one wants to think they are of ‘low estate;’ in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-15-18 Majority Report

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-15-18

Majority Report

What’s Happening:  “Last evening, on a 62 for, 58 against, 42 abstentions vote, the U. N. failed to reach the two-thirds majority needed for the U.S.-led amendment to also condemn Hamas for lobbing over 100 rockets into Israel. Instead, the resolution to condemn Israel passed by a vote of 120 for, 8 against and 45 abstentions – the vote obviously received much Islamic-nation support had(https://www.yahoo.com/news/latest-palestinians-urge-un-condemn-israel-over-gaza-210331357.html). The draft resolution being considered Wednesday (without the U.S,-led amendment) was proposed by Arab and Islamic countries. ”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I thought the majority was always right.”

Biblical Response:  “This may be an American pipe dream – or maybe it presumes a Christian consensus – in any case, due to the fallen nature of man, society’s recent bent all but assures the majority is wrong. Sad, but true. It was John Adams who said: “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” He was right.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in the rule of the majority, WHEN that majority decides anything that lines up with God’s Word (James 1:22). Unredeemed Man is seldom right…and then only by accident. That is why taking God’s Word out of public education only assures anarchy.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, since what we believe (especially the young and impressionable) is primarily the responsibility of the family, bring revival to this land. Help us to be that ‘shining light on a hill’ that is our destiny;in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-16-18 Who’s to Blame?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-16-18

Who’s to Blame?

What’s Happening:  “If you ask the White House, Hamas is to blame. If you ask Hamas, Israel and America are to blame. Whoever is to blame, by most counts, over 50 protesters were killed and over 2,000 were injured as the U.S. Embassy opening celebration was being held in Jerusalem Monday (https://www.yahoo.com/news/white-house-blames-hamas-over-192136258.html). ‘Said Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah: ‘We’re aware of the reports of continued violence in Gaza today. Responsibility with these tragic deaths rests solely with Hamas.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What a black mark on this day!”

Biblical Response:  “I’m sure that’s just what Hamas was aiming for…and the death toll would have been much higher if the Israeli Army had aimed at anything higher than legs (really …only 50 out of 2,000?!) Too bad for the protesters that they were so easily manipulated into defying Israel’s border…many of the protesters were armed…of course, most media outlets didn’t mention that.”

“Christians? Anyone’s death is tragic…but the tragedy is multiplied when it is for a hopeless cause (and if anything, the 1967 war should have taught people that…of course, the average protester is not a student of history…let alone of the Bible – Lev 14:34). The Palestinians elected Mahmoud Abbas to be the President of a non-existent country in 2005 and he continues to motivate young people to die for a lie…of course you have to believe the truth to not be deceived by a lie.”
