The Bane of Our Culture

What’s Happening:  “Pastor Robert Jeffress of the First Baptist Church in Dallas gave the prayer of dedication at the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem yesterday…much to the chagrin of a pluralistic media…who wanted to highlight the 55 Palestinians killed in protests – for youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDj1yNeF_nk) Jeffress is controversially known to think Jews and Muslims need conversion for peace with God.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Not so popular a pick for the prayer of dedication, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “No, if popularity with those in attendance was Jeffress’ goal, maybe not. Of course, he may have been trying to please God…praying and all. It’s kind of hard to please everyone…Jews, Muslims, AND Christians…but that is just what our pluralistic, syncretic culture demands. In an effort to please everyone and offend none, we offend everyone and please none. And many of our contemporary policies reflect that (I’m thinking of the LGBTQ community, and our thinking on the First Amendment).”

“Christians? There is nothing more dogmatic than orthodox Christianity. We believe there is only One Name to be called upon to be saved (Acts 4:12). Clue: it’s not Mohammad or Allah… or Hari Krishna  Joseph Smith, Buddha, et al, ad nauseum! Dare I actually speak His Name? JESUS!”

”Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, save us from our culture! Give us the courage to call upon the Name that is above every other Name (Phil. 2:9-11); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 5-14-18 Finally, After 23 Years!

Finally, After 23 Years!

What’s Happening:  “Trump is the fourth consecutive (since 1995) U.S. President to be faced with the decision: whether or not to ACTUALLY make Jerusalem the location of the US Embassy (it’s been the de facto location since the US recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital) (https://www.yahoo.com/news/u-opening-embassy-jerusalem-why-furor-082517916.html). Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the decision, saying, ‘The Jewish people have had a capital for 3,000 years, and that it is called Jerusalem.’ Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian President, was not so pleased.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Shouldn’t the Palestinians have a say? After all, isn’t East Jerusalem their capital?”

Biblical Response:  “Nope. They don’t even have a country (you can’t have a country by fiat [have one just by saying so]). Besides, Jerusalem was part of the territory given by God to the children of Israel in the land of Canaan (Lev. 14:34) Also, once part of Jordan, Jerusalem was won in the six-Day War in 1967, and promptly annexed and named Israel’s capital.”

“Christians? We believe that God owns the whole earth (Ps. 24:1) and He can do what He likes with borders, etc. (Acts 17:26). Moving our embassy to Jerusalem only makes biblical sense.”

”Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help our leaders to do only those things that agree with your timing and action; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 4-25-18 Prophetic or Flattery?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-25-18

Prophetic or Flattering?

What’s Happening:  “The date of the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, May 14, may have Cyrus-like prophetic significance: after all, it is 70 years to the day since Israel declared statehood (the number 70 has special significance for Israelis – 70 years of Babylonian captivity, 70 names for Jerusalem, 70 years of King David’s reign, etc.). Others who know Trump’s propensity toward ego say the the Cyrus/Trump meme is just flattery ( http://priscillapilon.com/wp-json/ https://www.yahoo.com/news/donald-trump-israelis-hear-echoes-ancient-emperor-155859705.html go ). Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked tweeted, ‘Trump is in his generation, as Cyrus was in his.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Trump would egocentrically like it to be prophetic, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “Probably…though there’s evidence he could cite to support the claim. I guess we should leave that to the conspiracists, the prognosticators, and the biblical scholars. Maybe that makes Jared into Ezra or Nehemiah (Jared, the President’s son-in-law and Jewish, is slated to stand in for Trump at the dedication). Or maybe that’s just trying to interpret the Bible by the morning paper – a practice that has led many astray.”

“Christians? Maybe these are just coincidences and rumors of coincidences (Matt. 24:6). In any case, there is little we can do to enhance or deter prophetic history…past or future. While we want to have influence in the Mideast – hence, moving our Embassy from Tel-Aviv to Israel’s capital, Jerusalem – we should never forget that our primary task in Israel (or anywhere in the world, for that matter) is evangelism. Any action that will further that goal is justified (Prov. 11:30).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we want to be spiritual, not carnal, let us not get too far afield in our pursuit of the prophetic; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 3-30-18 What If?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-30-18

What If?

What’s Happening:  “The whole sky went dark today at noon as the Roman soldiers put three criminals to death by the dreaded crucifixion, just outside of Jerusalem, Israel (some even reported an earthquake). Although the two on either side were notorious thieves, the one they crucified in the middle was killed because he had reportedly claimed to be the King of the Jews (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus,_King_of_the_Jews). Pontius Pilate, the Roman Procurator was quoted as saying, ‘(Matt 27:22) What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?’ However, the crowd which called for His crucifixion saying they had no king but Caesar, prevailed.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Doesn’t custom call for the pardon of a criminal?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, but the people called for Barrabas (he being a zealot) because he was more the rabble rouser they thought might overthrow the Romans by force. Besides, this Jesus guy didn’t call for overthrow…He wanted reform through ‘love’…how ridiculous! Nobody will even miss Him when He’s gone!”

“Christians? Oh yeah, they’ll probably call themselves that…those few who remain faithful. They’ll scatter like a flock of sheep without a Shepherd. Besides, I heard the Romans even sealed His burial place and put a Roman Guard on it (a squad of as many as a dozen soldiers).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we had such hope…please do not let us get discouraged under this Roman oppression.”
