Go Left at Madagascar

What’s Happening: “You might not know where Mozambique is (East Africa, on the mainland Indian Ocean coast, just west of the island of Madagascar – south of Zimbabwe, east of Tanzania), but they recently (April 7) lost 52 young people who refused to join the ranks of Islamic jihadists. The terrorists are locally known as al-Shabbab, though they would say they are part of the Islamic State. They are attempting to establish a caliphate, but police say they are chasing them to exact justice. Yesterday’s AFP article chronicles a two-year old rampage (https://news.yahoo.com/fifty-two-villagers-killed-jihadists-northern-mozambique-183053657.html). Quoting the article: ‘For more than two years the jihadists mainly targeted isolated villages, killing more than 900 people, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED).’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Another reason I’m glad to live in America!”

Biblical Response:  “Me, too…but we have to be careful that being born here (an event over which we both had no control) doesn’t make us too arrogant to help…or at least pray (Rom. 12:15).”

“Fear apparently had no effect on those young people, at least they would rather die than be a part of the jihadist’s reign of terror. I, for one, applaud them. Until more people are willing to have the courage of their convictions, fear will continue to make folks do things they would rather not. Shouldn’t we fear? Yes, but not like you think (Matt. 10:28):

‘And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.’ (KJV)”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in fear. Godly fear. In fact, godly fear might lead to faith (this is  exactly what Jesus was trying to say in Luke 13:4). This kind of fear leads to wisdom (Ps. 110:11; Prov. 4:7,10:11). The terrorists are looking forward to 72 virgins. Won’t they be surprised?!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we don’t need to be filled with foolish faith, we don’t need to be filled with foolish fear, either; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-25-20 A House Divided

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-25-20

A House Divided

What’s Happening: “Perhaps the ‘universal’ Shi’a condemnation of Soleimani’s assassination-by-drone is not so universal. In an article posted yesterday, there seems to be a rift between Shi’a regarding his killing…some are in mourning…some are actually in celebration. While pro-Iranian Shi’a  are convinced Quds Force Commander Gen. Soleimani is a martyr, euphoria in South Yemen and sporadic celebrations throughout the Arab Middle East – amongst Shi’a! – has many seeing a rift they didn’t know was there (https://www.yahoo.com/news/damaged-drone-strike-suleimanis-sainthood-155200496.html). Many Iraqi Shi’a just want all foreign troops to get out. It’s more of a sovereignty issue with them.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Who cares how Shi’as are reacting; it doesn’t make Soleimani any less dead…and I am rejoicing.”

Biblical Response:  “While I may share your feelings, rejoicing the just death of a murdering terrorist mastermind, how Shi’as may be responding – that there is a divide – is good news! Let me explain. There are basically two kinds of Muslims: Sunnis and Shiites. Those of the Sunni persuasion are mostly peace-loving. They represent approximately 80% of the Muslim world. Those of the Shiite persuasion think change must happen and favor terrorism and holy war (jihad) to accomplish it. They represent approximately 20% of Islam. Obviously, when there is a factionalization of the Shiites, it is potentially good news, as a house divided against itself cannot stand (Lk. 11:17).”

“Christians? We believe unity is a huge thing, not always to be encouraged (Gen. 11:1-7). To favor the unity of your enemy is insanity, as you don’t want the prosperity of their cause. Of course, we want them to come to the knowledge of the truth: that Jesus is the only way…not Allah (John 14:6), that there is no other name men may call upon to be saved (Acts 4:12). Actually, that is a message for all Muslims.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to favor disunity in our enemies, unity in ourselves; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Shedding Innocent Blood Is Wrong…Period!

What’s Happening: “Three were killed and at least twenty were injured at the bombing yesterday at a mosque in Kabul (Afghanistan). Among the dead was Muslim cleric Samiullah Raihan, who was leading prayers in the Sunni Al-Taqwa mosque. Although no one has claimed responsibility, it is not uncommon for warring factions of Muslims to take matters into their own hands (https://www.yahoo.com/news/bomb-kills-least-one-during-friday-prayers-mosque-094010470.html). Quoting from the Reuters article: ‘Firdaws Faramarz, a police spokesman, said explosives were apparently placed near the altar of the Al-Taqwa mosque, a place used by the mosque leader to initiate the prayers.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “If Muslims want to kill Muslims, more power to ‘em!”

Biblical Response:  “That sentiment is why jihad recruiting is easy and evangelism efforts among Muslim communities is hard. The ‘Christian’ West (or should I say the post-Christian West? – many churches are not well populated…except for CHRINOs – CHRistians In Name Only). I know there’s a tendency to fear the unfamiliar and Muslim terrorism has fanned ideological bias, but if we truly believe in Christianity’s inherent superiority, we won’t be cheering on these innocent deaths (Ex. 20:13)…or taking matters into our own hands, either. God is quite capable of sorting nations and territories out (Acts 17:26).”

“Christians? They won’t know we are Christian by our hate, but by our love (Jn. 13:35). Rather, we should weep for those who weep (Rom. 12:15). A little kindness and compassion would go much further than judgmentalism and vengeance.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to love unconditionally and see every non-Christian as a potential future family member; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
