CLARITY – 7-16-18 Progressives Regress

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-16-18

Progressives Regress

What’s Happening:  “Though 85-year-old Feinstein is likely to win, the California Democratic Party has endorsed her opponent, State Senator Kevin de Leon. Senator Feinstein has been a centrist, but progressive elements of the Democratic Party have forced her to the left on the legalization of marijuana, where she has been historically against it (https://www.yahoo.com/news/california-democratic-party-snubs-dianne-133348215.html). ‘I just think we need a younger, progressive person there. The Democratic Party in California has moved to the left, and he personifies those values,’ said state Democratic committee member Lynne Standard-Nightengale.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Doesn’t Feinsein epitomize the swamp?”

Biblical Response:  “She is definitely a part of the establishment…being 85 almost certifies that. Still, just because something is new is not a sign automatically of a step forward. Not learning the lessons of the past only guarantees mistakes will be repeated…or worsened. Progressives assume that less control is forward thinking. But what if more control yielded progress? Sometimes it does.”

“Christians? Sometimes change is good…sometimes it is bad. How can we be certain when there are forces pulling both ways? Thankfully, God has given us a standard to judge by…a standard that is unchanging. It is called the Word of God (Matt. 4:4). When we begin to call things that are wrong right, it is because we have conveniently used our own desires as a standard (2 Cor. 10:12).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we want progress, we don’t want to have to compromise to get it. Help us establish a standard to live by; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-26-18 The Trouble with Tea Leaves

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-26-18

The Trouble with Tea Leaves

What’s Happening:  “California’s high-profile Democratic Congressman, Dianne Feinstein, failed to get her state party’s endorsement when they only voted to endorse by 54% (60% is required). Her leading opponent, State Senate Leader Kevin de Leon, took this as the party’s departure from the aging Feinstein’s centrist leanings (she’ll be 85 this year). His progressive agenda supports many things over which Feinstein has equivocated (https://www.yahoo.com/news/california-democrats-decline-endorse-dianne-162631877.html).  Leon quipped, ‘We all deserve a leader who will take our climate action to Washington, and will fight each and every day to protect our human and civil rights, our immigrant families and Dreamers, champion universal health care and create good paying middle class jobs.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “That’s out in California…why should I care?”

Biblical Response:  “Often, as California goes, so goes the nation…or so they think (the middle of the country may beg to differ); still, they are quite influential. The trouble with reading tea leaves (or any kind of predictability method) is their changing nature. The Democratic Party was not so progressive until the popularity of Bernie Sanders. Maybe Millenials will rule the day…maybe not. The fickleness of the electorate in 2016 had the polls all wrong…or maybe the predictions were just wrong.”

“Christians? Although God was not surprised that Trump won, we do not need to be fatalists: since everything is predetermined, we can just relax. God knows the future, make no mistake (Is, 46:10), but He counts on us being the salt and light {Matt. 5:13-14). We are not to believe any prognosticator, but trust in God’s Word (Ps. 119).”
