LUI – Living Under the Influence

What’s Happening: “Ukrainian officials seized about $60 Million worth of heroin – over half a ton – Sunday, officials said. It appears that the US is not alone when it comes to the illicit use and smuggling of drugs…on March 21, $51 Million worth of heroin was seized in a cargo ship in the Black Sea port of Odessa. This crescendos a recent uptick in psychotropic substances seized (https://www.yahoo.com/news/ukraine-police-seize-60mn-heroin-never-seen-much-153613737.html).  Some argue that what you do privately ought to be private.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Well, shouldn’t it? Taking an illegal substance out of your house…now I can see the crime in that.”

Biblical Response:  “A lot of people have that view…they argue: ‘It is ny body, isn’t it? (Sounds like a pro-choice argument…hmmm).’ I thought you were bought with a price (1 Cor. 6:20; 7:23) Whether you are talking alcohol or drugs or some other controlled substance, the influence inside the home is different than the influence outside…right? Of course. the potential for collateral damage is always higher the more people that are exposed to behaviors influenced by mind-benders. That’s why there are laws governing the way we behave in public (public intoxication, DUI, etc.).

Sure, some will argue that anything that comes from something God made cannot be bad. Really? What about toxins or other poisons? And I’m not of the opinion that Jesus turned water into grape juice at the wedding in Cana! Didn’t He say something about that (Eph. 5:18)? Maybe it’s how much or how we use such substances (Phil. 4:5). ”

Christians? For us (maybe for others, too), there is no such thing as ‘private.’ Even what we do ‘alone’ in the ‘privacy’ of our own homes, God was present for (Ps. 139). The mistake comes when we think it’s our life we live.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be ever mindful of Your all-seeing eye…and grateful (if we but ask) for Your all-forgiving heart; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

As Goes the King

What’s Happening: “Maybe some church splits are good – in any case it’s happening, and the departure of the Ukrainian arm of the Russian Orthodox Church  of Kiev is a good thing in the eyes of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko (https://www.yahoo.com/news/ukraine-church-picks-bishop-leader-050000393.html). ‘What kind of church is this? This is a church without Putin,’ said President of Ukraine Poroshenko.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “All splits are bad. What about appeals for unity?’

Biblical Response:  “Yeah? And what about appeals to ‘come out from among them’ (2 Cor. 6:17)? Of course that’s a decision to break off…now they have to choose a leader – and they have: 39-year old ‘the Metropolitan of Kiev and Ukraine, Epifaniy,’ also known as Serhiy Dumenko. Of course, ‘as goes the king, so goes the kingdom.’ This may be alright for America, with the presumption of a Christian majority (I’m thinking of a founder’s quote: ‘Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.’ John Adams) As soon as you have a leader named, he (or she) is leading somewhere…good or bad.”

“Christians? We are not exempt from this principle. However, we believe in ‘God-rule’ not ‘self-rule.’ Untransformed, Man’s heart is wicked. All the more reason for choosing God-ordained leadership (‘…If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. …’ Rom. 12:8 NLT).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to examine a man’s character and submissiveness to Your authority, as we must follow his lead; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-30-18 Final Justice

CLARITY

Final Justice

What’s Happening:  “Arkady Babchenko, a Russian journalist who had fled Russia for relative safety in Kiev, Ukraine, was shot in the back and killed Tuesday just outside his upscale apartment. Local authorities believe his criticalness of the Moscow government’s policies finally caught up with him, but launched a full-scale investigation into the incident (https://www.yahoo.com/news/russian-journalist-shot-killed-ukrainian-capital-192728589.html). ‘Ukraine is becoming the most dangerous country for reporters,” said Russian lawmaker Yevgeny Revenko. You think?”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess Babchenko didn’t go far enough from Russia…”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe not, though I wonder if you can ever be far enough from the long arm of Russian “justice.” Don’t get me wrong, I think dissent should be protected speech, but not everywhere has freedom of the press. Thankfully, Babchenko’s death is only the end of his earth-life. He may have been a Christian. If so, eternal bliss is beginning. ”

“Christians? There are many injustices this world continues to mete out, but final justice awaits us all. Some will be grateful…others will not (Heb. 9:27).”

”Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help the Babchenko family with their loss and help us all look for the final justice that will be rendered one day; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
