CLARITY – 7-25-18 Fascination Then Reality

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-25-18

Fascination Then Reality

What’s Happening:  “The Kilauea Volcano continues to spew – at first it was a nuisance, then a danger to local residents, then an impediment to tourism, now a source of revenue…maybe getting too close in tour boats is not as good an idea as it was once thought to be…at least not for the 22 that were injured on one tour boat; fascination gave way to reality, however https://www.westernjournal.com/passengers-recounts-moments-lava-hit-hawaii-tour-boat/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-WJ&utm_campaign=dailyam&utm_content=western-journal). ‘This stuff was magical and exciting, and no one was saying a word,’ said Bryan, one of the injured.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Can’t blame the tour owners. They’re just trying to make a living.”

Biblical Response:  “True, if the Coast Guard’s 300 yard limit is not enough deterrence, maybe the lawsuits of patrons will speak louder. I don’t blame them for trying to make something good out of a natural disaster, or people from having some fascination with ‘Mother Nature’, but when wisdom and caution are ignored in favor of catering to an appetite for being close to raw, uncontrolled power and a greed for handsome profits….well everyone gets what they deserve…I’m just concerned for the innocent bystander.”

“Christians? Playing close to the cliff might be more scintillating, but taking foolish risks is not a good idea (Prov 14:16 – ‘The wise are cautious and avoid danger; fools plunge ahead with reckless confidence.’ NLT).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us when fascination wants to rule over good sense; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-19-18 Closer Not Necessarily Better

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-19-18

Closer Not Necessarily Better

What’s Happening:  “The Coast Guard has increased the distance tour boats may come to where the lava flow enters the sea at the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii after 23 were injured by an explosion. The distance is now 300 meters…before, you could apply for a 50-meter permit (https://www.yahoo.com/news/hawaii-volcano-boat-tours-continue-063516524.html).  ‘”If we stop operating, it not only hurts us, it hurts the community,’ tour director  Kanoa Jones said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Oops! I guess they got too close, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “You think?! That’s what they make binoculars for. They say, ‘Curiosity killed the cat,’ … but he (or in this case ‘they’) at least had a good view. Of course, the free publicity of a major natural disaster has helped many tour directors…except those who got too close.”

“Christians? Playing close to the edge is not worth the risk (2 Tim. 2:22). The question is not how close to danger you can get and remain unscathed…but how far away from temptation you can live and still feel the ‘heat.’ Like it says in James 4:8 ‘Draw nigh to God…’

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while fascination may drive us closer, let us take Your Word for things we were never intended to experience; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-26-18 Things That Don’t Burn

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-26-18

Things That Don’t Burn

What’s Happening:  “The Kilauea volcano (on the big island of Hawaii) continues to spew from its summit and from fissures as much as 25 miles away. There are now 3 flows that have reached the ocean, sending clouds of steam filled with particles of glass skyward (https://www.yahoo.com/news/latest-ash-hawaii-volcano-settles-small-towns-202914961.html. Officials in Hawaii County said a fissure that opened earlier (almost two dozen fissures far from the summit have opened) joined the two flows that entered the ocean and became a third flow into the sea Thursday.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Burn, baby, burn!”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps something a bystanding pyromaniac in fascination would say…why is it Man is so fascinated by burning things (or, at least things that should burn)? – I’m thinking about Moses who ‘turned aside’ to see the strange sight of a bush that burned, but was not consumed (Ex. 3:4). Still, it’s a small fraction of a rural area on a huge island and no real cause for concern for anybody but fear-mongering reporters.”

“Christians? As for the fascination with fire…maybe it stems from the burning bush experience; maybe from those who will burn in hell without being consumed – all the pain – no relief (Rev. 20:14-15). Don’t think they will not be burned? How else will they proclaim that He is Lord? (Phil. 2:10-11). Kneel now or later…but you will kneel.”
