CLARITY – 7-17-18 Controlling the Narrative

Controlling the Narrative

What’s Happening:  “The news is abuzz about what Trump said about our intelligence services…that he believes Putin over them…that he believes maybe Russia didn’t meddle in the the 2016 election…that his ego is so big that he couldn’t see past the ‘witch hunt’ of the Mueller probe and even doubted the indictment of the twelve Russian spies…and that’s the conservatives (https://www.dailywire.com/news/33123/trump-slams-his-own-intelligence-agencies-insists-ben-shapiro?utm_source=cnemail&utm_medium=email&utm_content=071718-news&utm_campaign=position1). But perhaps he’s just taking a cue from the liberal playbook and controlling the narrative. Even conservative Allen West tweeted: ‘There are those who say you do not go into such a summit to embarrass, or confront. I say you do not sit with the devil and offer him something cool to drink.’ Perhaps a better saying is: You don’t confront a snake about the viciousness of his bite!’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Dumb like a fox?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah…kind of. I mean, you know what the liberals are going to say…whatever you say they are going to find fault with it. And you know how everyone believes (including Putin) about the size of your ego…say something that will give Putin pause. If you want to charm a tyrannical despot (or a snake), you can’t start by making accusations, however true they may be. Again…controlling the narrative..”

“Christians? Controlling the narrative is what the Sermon on the Mount was all about (Matt. 5-7). Read how many times Jesus said what was written in the law, then went on to say ‘But I say…’ or started his edicts with a ‘But…’ (Matt. 5:32,37,39,44; 6;3,6,7,15,17,23, 27, 33). I’m not saying President Trump is so wise or does not have a huge ego, I’m just say that controlling the narrative determines the direction of conversation…you attract more bees with sugar than with vinegar.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to gain victory over the enemy by being wise as serpents and gentle as doves (Matt. 10:16); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-2-18 GIGO

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-2-18

GIGO

What’s Happening:  “A recent survey found younger voters (those 30 and under) most concerned about the economy and social inequality. Only 6% listed gun control as a major concern, compared to 21% after the Parkland, FL shooting. NextGen America, a progressive climate action committee said students surveyed listed college affordability, health care, racial injustice and climate change as their areas of primary concern…why Democrats do well among youth (https://www.yahoo.com/news/young-people-plan-vote-year-key-issues-may-surprise-090006929.html). Olivia Bercow, a spokesperson for the organization said, ‘I think that, for the most part, young people are really, really engaged on the issues and right now, we’re seeing what having a certain type of leadership in office looks like on issues that matter.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Young voters usually don’t show up at the polls, so I’m not worried.”

Biblical Response:  “A survey done in 2018 said only 37% of youth intend to vote. Who knows what fraction of that will actually show up…so I’m inclined to relax with you – except the youth ARE the future. Conservatives may rejoice over low participation rates of the youth, but that is not good news. The public education system in America doesn’t teach conservative family values….like voting…but that’s not a fact we want to tout.”

“Christians? You can’t ask a pagan to vote his conscience…especially when the world has programmed him (1 John 2;15). Their is an old saying in computer circles: Garbage In, Garbage Out (GIGO). Or as the prophet Hosea said, “You sow the wind, and reap the whirlwind…” (Hos. 8:7).”

”Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to consider the youth as the sacred trust that they are and teach them the values that made America great (Eph. 6:4); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 5-19-18 Hitched

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-19-18

Hitched

What’s Happening:  “A term not likely used in so traditional a setting as a royal wedding – Meghan and Harry tied the knot today beginning at 6:00am ET (later at Windsor, England) – still, it is apropos for a couple who will team their various strengths to begin their storybook life together. The wedding was attended by the 600 invited guests, but viewed by some 3 billion (https://www.yahoo.com/news/prince-harry-meghan-markle-officially-114140340.html). Not in attendance or viewing (at least here on earth) were the the ten killed in a Santa Fe, Texas High school yesterday…or maybe even the ten that were injured (https://www.yahoo.com/news/ap-learns-teen-held-texas-attack-played-football-185006401.html

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So Harry and Meghan got married…big deal!”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe not to you, but the tens of thousands that stood in crowds just to catch a glimpse of their carriage going by might beg to differ…I mean, did Oprah Winfrey or Elton John attend your wedding?! The 200 charities that Harry is involved with will, no doubt, keep them both busy…that and their attendance at Prince Charles 70th birthday celebration has caused the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (their new titles) to postpone their honeymoon.”

“Christians? We have some interest. After all, the pomp and circumstance is small compared to the wedding we’ll one day attend (we’re the bride!) [Rev. 19:9]. Meanwhile, just the promise (John 14:18; Luke 24:49) of so great a union has us busy (Titus 2:7).”

”Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us realize we are not in this alone; that You have teamed up with us to accomplish Your purposes (Phil. 2:13); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 2-28-18 “…Walls Work”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-28-18

“…Walls Work”

What’s Happening:  “The Trump Administration won a small victory in court yesterday to build the border wall (though the money has yet to be approved by Congress). U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel ruled against the State of California and various advocacy groups in its ruling in the San Diego court. Mexico continues to deny that it will pay for the wall (https://www.yahoo.com/news/despite-legal-victory-trump-needs-money-border-wall-071213597.html). Department of Justice spokesman, Devin O’Malley applauded the decision saying, ‘this important work [is] vital to our nation’s interests.’ Homeland Security spokesman Tyler Houlton quipped, ‘Simply put, walls work.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Don’t drugs and human trafficking come through tunnels under and  by way of people over walls?”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, currently…where there are short walls or distances to negotiate (though there are some tunnels that get blown up upon discovery)…but not in the border security system the administration is proposing. The difficult-to-scale 30’ walls, increased number of border agents and added technological improvements suggested (drones, ground penetrating radar, etc.) should deter most illegal entry of drugs or people. Now all the administration has to do is come up with the money. This shouldn’t be too hard…privately, publicly…or through the tariffs, customs or border crossing fees we could charge Mexico. ”

“Christians? We believe borders are sacred, even determined by God (Acts 17:26). Protecting them only makes sense. Having a country without borders is like living life without rules…that doesn’t work very well, either.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us know what is right and do what is right. While we want to be generous and good stewards, we must first protect what you have given us to steward over;  in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 2-17-18 It Took a Miracle

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-17-18

It Took a Miracle

What’s Happening:  “How about some good news for a change? An American Airlines ticket agent, working at Sacramento International Airport, called the sheriff when two girls, 15 and 17, tried to check in for a flight to New York…which may have been for the purpose of human trafficking. The agent, Denise Miracle (yes, that’s her real name) is being called a hero (https://www.yahoo.com/news/american-airlines-agent-saves-2-153552330.html). Quoting Miracle, ‘It was a first-class ticket. It was very expensive. I told a supervisor, ‘I’m going to call the sheriff. It just doesn’t feel right to me,’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess their parents were relieved!”

Biblical Response:  “Shocked is more likely. Their girls had told them they were spending the night at a friend’s house. They were lured by a free ticket (though the one-way ticket they’d been told was 2-way) and an offer of $2,000 to model for a video. Wouldn’t they have been surprised?”

“Christians? We’ve all got a price…hopefully Christians realize they’ve been bought with a price (1 Cor. 7:23). Being “not your own” (1 Cor. 6:20) takes a little getting used to. We have to ask the Owner for permission for everything questionable. The trouble comes when we want to do (or allow to be done) things we used to do, but that are no longer allowed.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give us the discretion and the discernment we need…the discretion not to succumb to our old defaults, and the discernment not to ask in the first place for permission to do those things we already know He will respond to negatively; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 2-10-18 Imagine

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-10-18

Imagine

What’s Happening:  “John Lennon’s “Imagine” had a Korean twist as four members of Korean rock bands rendered the ‘globalism idealists’ theme song’ at the 2018 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony. South Korea and the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea – North) marched in together under a white flag with a light blue united Korean peninsula (North and South) on it; viewed by the U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Kim Yo Jong, the sister of the North Korean leader – the VP remained seated a row ahead with his guest: the father of tortured and killed Otto Warmbier. The idealistic was tempered by the realistic (https://www.elitedaily.com/p/who-sang-imagine-at-the-2018-olympic-opening-ceremony-korean-singers-performed-the-rendition-8173367). ‘Dear athletes, now, it’s your turn!’ Bach, the IOC Chairman said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Maybe there will now be peace between North and South.”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah…and maybe Santa Claus is real, too. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for forgiveness and mercy…but not for unrepentant violence accompanied by denials and delay. Meanwhile, the DPRK’s progress toward making their threats real continues. South Korea’s leader Moon seems lulled by the tune the charmer is playing, but there is a reason the Colt Company called the .45 revolver (that tamed the ‘Wild West’) the ‘Peacemaker.’”

“Christians? We’re all for peace…but the absence of conflict is not peace. The presence of God is. We are not supposed to call those things that are as though they weren’t, but “those things that aren’t as though they were” (Rom. 4:17). Denying reality is a sure path to the unimaginable. Sticking your head in the sand doesn’t change what’s happening above.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we want to pursue a path of non-aggression, let us not trust the nature of fallen Man; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 1-19-18 Where Were the Neighbors?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-19-18

Where Were the Neighbors?

What’s Happening:  “Details continue to be revealed as the 13 children (2-29) are being treated in local hospitals for the forced incarceration by the parents, David Allen and Louise Ann Turpin, who were arrested last Sunday on torture and child endangerment charges. They might still be there if a 17-year-old sibling had not escaped out a window and called police for help (https://www.yahoo.com/news/13-children-held-captive-parents-161714493.html). ‘We do need to acknowledge the courage of the young girl who escaped from that residence to bring attention so they could get the help that they so needed,’ said Captain Greg Fellows of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.”

Knee-jerk Response: “Where were the neighbors?”

Biblical Response:  “Good question…though I have to say that when I moved from San Diego in 1977, the neighbors came to say goodbye…sadly, it was the first time I had met them. Of course, that was only after a year…the Turpins had been there since 2010..I guess it depends on your definition of ‘neighbor.’ Perhaps we do tend to be too focused on our screens (phones, tablets, laptops, TV’s) to lift our heads to discover what is going on all around.”

“Christians? The Bible has a lot to say on how to be a good neighbor (Luke 10:25-37). Additionally, care for our children should be the parents’ first calling. Our children should be our first disciples…their salvation and godly upbringing our primary concern.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, forgive us where we have fallen short in our God-given responsibilities and help us to do better; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 1-16-18 Then There Were Three

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-16-18

Then There Were Three

What’s Happening:  “First, there were wildfires, then devastating mudslides, now the cleanup and the 20 dead – four missing has turned to three with the discovery of 53-year-old transient  John ‘Jack’ Cantin and his dog Tina in Ventura. The mudslides have damaged or destroyed 500 of the 3,200 homes in Montecito, California (https://www.yahoo.com/news/latest-president-trump-monitoring-california-mudslides-171853755.html). Although much of the water has receded on highway 101, Jim Shivers of California’s Highway Transportation Department said that cleanup crews were only recently allowed in to focus on removing the debris. ”

Knee-jerk Response: “Imagine the terror of wildfires, only to be followed by mudslides!”

Biblical Response:  “That was tragic, for sure. Still, it may not have been all that different for ‘Jack.’ He went from homeless to…well, homeless. At least he wasn’t of that number (20!) who were killed by the recent mudslides. All tragedy may be local, but the whole nation should be grieving.

“Christians? Almost everyone will experience a devastating loss during their lifetime, but we can be thankful that God is never caught off guard by these events. Jesus even tells of one such tragedy in the New Testament  (Luke 13:2-5). He said it was not always the result of their own sin. The are four basic reasons for calamity; 1) our stupidity – sinful or otherwise 2) someone else’s stupidity – sometimes we are the ‘innocent’ victims (read: collateral damage) 3) living in a fallen world – the repercussions of what Adam and Eve set in motion are incalculable or 4) God is trying to show us something (or 5: some combination).Still, God is just as upset about it.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to correct the things we can, comfort others where we can, and quit blaming You for every bad thing that happens (Really? ‘Acts of God?!’): in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
