CLARITY – 12-1-18 The Way of All Flesh

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-1-18

The Way of All Flesh

What’s Happening: “Former President George Bush has died at 94. Although he only served one term, his resume’ reads like that of one of the greatest Americans in history: the son of a Senator and father of a President (which had not happened since John Quincy Adams became a successor to John Adams), a war hero in WWII (winning the Distinguished Flying Cross), Congressman, U.N. Ambassador, Republican Party Chairman, Envoy to China. CIA Director, and Vice President…twice (under Ronald Reagan). He started and won the 1st Gulf War in 1991, presided over the end of the Cold War and the demise of the former Soviet Union (USSR), and much more (https://www.westernjournal.com/spokesman-former-u-s-president-george-h-w-bush-dies-age-94/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=WJBreaking&utm_campaign=breaking&utm_content=western-journal). His wife, Barbara died earlier this year in April, having been married longer than any presidential couple in history. He may have lost any hope of re-election with the famous quote he had to later eat: “Read my lips. No new taxes.””

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Those were the days of unity.”

Biblical Response:  “Not hardly (though they may not rival the partisanship of today). The brouhaha that erupted over the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas (by Bush-41) indicated early the leftward leanings of the media and they FBI. The Judge he faces today is the real Supreme Court Justice! His resume’ will do him little good now. It’s not what you know, it’s Who.”

“Christians? The way of all flesh (Gen, 6:13) is the way of George Bush…and me…and you. Although it may be too late to pray for the eternal fate of George Bush, it’s not too late for anyone reading this (Heb. 9:27).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we pray for comfort for the Bush family and we pray for their (and our) eternal destiny; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-27-18

Building a Legacy

What’s Happening:  “John McCain, 81, died Saturday after succumbing to brain cancer, having fought that disease for over a year, and will lie in State at the rotunda of the Capitol, one of only 31 that have been accorded that honor in 166 years (all the way back to President Lincoln). He was a graduate of the Naval Academy, was shot down over Vietnam where he was captured and spent over 5 years imprisoned there, served terms in the House and Senate and even ran for President, though unsuccessfully. He will be sorely missed (https://www.wkyc.com/article/news/nation-now/john-mccain-to-lie-in-state-at-us-capitol-an-honor-bestowed-on-only-30-other-people/465-16c6929c-756b-420c-a4f9-0898b97106b1). Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell said McCain was ‘a great American patriot, a statesman who put his country first and enriched this institution through many years of service.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wasn’t he one of Trump’s thorns in the side?

Biblical Response:  “He did vote against repealing Obamacare at the last minute…as a Republican that was almost unforgivable. Still, he was his own man, and that, for a politician is saying something….in fact, that might be what separates many politicians from statesmen. Most truly great men (or women) don’t consciously build a legacy…they just let the chips fall where they may and end up judged ‘great’ by history (Alexander the Great, Peter the Great, etc., come to mind). In other words, you don’t build a lasting legacy by building a legacy.”

Christians? The Scriptures admonish us: ‘For they loved the praise of men rather than God’ (John 12:43). Or as I like to say. ‘I’d pat you on the back, but your hand is in the way.’ Anytime we have to be concerned about what our actions may be saying to a future generation…we probably shouldn’t.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us build a legacy by surprise…and may it be worthy of emulation;  in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
