CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-27-20

Consider the Source

What’s Happening: “This is the second time strict Saudi laws have been relaxed recently. First, it was that flogging, the practice of receiving as much as 50 lashes while handcuffed, sometimes for non-violent crimes, was abolished. Secondly, that minors were exempt from execution. Sharia Law, the law in many majority-Islamic nations, sources much of its edicts in the Koran, or as they would spell it, the Quran. King Salman has brought many controversial reforms to Saudi Arabia and activists generally applaud his attempts at bringing his country into the 21st century (https://news.yahoo.com/saudi-arabia-ends-death-penalty-151128365.html). Quoting AP’s Sunday article: The president of the Saudi government’s Human Rights Commission, Awwad Alawwad, confirmed the latest decision in a statement Sunday, saying it helps the kingdom establish ‘a more modern penal code and demonstrates the kingdom’s commitment to following through on key reforms.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’m glad they’re becoming more modern…and glad that I don’t live under Sharia Law!”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps you live in one of the seven states that have banned Sharia law (as of July, 2019: Alabama, Arizona, Kansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Dakota and Tennessee.). At least you don’t live in Michigan (which goes further than any other state in the Sharia direction https://www.sapiens.org/culture/sharia-united-states/). Then there’s Minnesota’s Fifth District Representative, Ilhan Omar. an avowed Muslim, who might be more comfortable under Sharia.  All these facts might fly in the face of your exclamation.”

“As to welcoming their reforms, if they last…and are expanded…I might welcome them, too. The key t6 the legitimacy of any law is its source. God, who made man (Gen. 1:26), as the Creator, should have the final say in how man should interact with man. Since Sharia gets its law from the Koran  (from what Allah is purported to have said) it must be illegitimate; at least for a Christian nation (this might be up for argument, but not if you were one of the Founders – or the Supreme Court in 1892  in Holy Trinity v. United States). And if you think Allah is just another name for Jehovah, you haven’t read the Koran.“

“Christians? We believe that all legitimate law must come from His Word, as dictated by the Holy Spirit (2 Tim. 3:16). Much of it comes from the Ten Commandments (Ex. 20). By the way, those are commandments, not suggestions. In determining a law’s legitimacy, you have to consider the Source.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to welcome change that moves us legitimately in the right direction; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
