A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-3-20
We’ve Come a Long Way
What’s Happening: “The LGBTQIA+ community is petitioning for their issues to be brought up by the moderator of next week’s Vice Presidential debate between V.P. Mike Pence and his challenger, Senator Kamala Harris. In a letter petitioning moderator Susan Page, the activists point out that those issues were excluded from the Presidential debate last Tuesday, even though, according to their numbers, over 10 million voters are LGBTQ. They assert the House passed the Equality Act (EA) back in 2019, but it got buried in committee in the Senate, primarily because it is opposed by the administration. The EA puts sexual orientation on the non-discriminatory list of the Civil Rights Act. Also, they claim they’ll be injured as a group if the Affordable Care Act is eliminated by the Supreme Court (which is scheduled for arguments next month) (https://www.yahoo.com/news/activists-pressure-debate-moderator-to-question-pence-on-lgbtq-issues-140029823.html). Quoting from the Yahoo News article: ‘In the letter to the debate commission and Page, the coronavirus activists said the LGBTQ community was ‘in crisis’ thanks in part to the pandemic and the policies of the Trump administration.’”
Knee-Jerk Response: “So I guess if you’re LGBTQ you can currently be discriminated against…how despicable! All discrimination is wrong! All segregation is wrong!””
Biblical Response: “Really? Even discrimination and segregation of those who commit rape, murder, etc.? Isn’t that what prisons are for? Oh, you say…well, not those. So, who gets to decide who is allowed what behavior? The legislature? The courts? If you say ‘yes,’ then it was once okay to own people (slavery). Well. ‘no’ you say. That is morally wrong. That is against God’s law. I’m glad you brought Him up. It seems like the Creator should have total say over His Creation. What is acceptable and unacceptable should be His sole purview. And passing laws that agree with His law should mean a more peaceable society. And it does…presuming we all agree that there is a God…which we don’t…and there’s the basic rub. The instruction manual (the Bible) used to be the basis for most of our laws…but not any more (and the Bible’s full of prohibitions against LGBTQ: Lev. 18:22; 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9; 1 Tim. 1:10; etc.). From this point, I could go into all the societal advantages of a Christian consensus, but the length of this blog does not allow for that. Suffice it to say, we’ve come a long way…and not necessarily in a good direction.”
“Christians? We don’t believe LGBTQ are God-glorifying in their behavior…but they are no less condemned than we (though our sin is under His blood because we acknowledge the wrongness of our behavior, accept His forgiveness and seek His help). Do Christians condemn the LGBTQ? Well, let me put it this way: We hate the sin, but love the sinner. I love the way the Living Bible renders it:
‘The good hate the badness of the wicked. The wicked hate the goodness of the good.’ (Prov. 29:27 LB)”
Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray: “Heavenly Father, help us to not consider others hypocritically…but mercifully…remembering: ‘there, but for the grace of God, go I; in Jesus’ Name, amen.
