We’ve Come a Long Way

What’s Happening: “The LGBTQIA+ community is petitioning for their issues to be brought up by the moderator of next week’s Vice Presidential debate between V.P. Mike Pence and his challenger, Senator Kamala Harris. In a letter petitioning moderator Susan Page, the activists point out that those issues were excluded from the Presidential debate last Tuesday, even though, according to their numbers, over 10 million voters are LGBTQ. They assert the House passed the Equality Act (EA) back in 2019, but it got buried in committee in the Senate, primarily because it is opposed by the administration. The EA puts sexual orientation on the non-discriminatory list of the Civil Rights Act. Also, they claim they’ll be injured as a group if the Affordable Care Act is eliminated by the Supreme Court (which is scheduled for arguments next month) (https://www.yahoo.com/news/activists-pressure-debate-moderator-to-question-pence-on-lgbtq-issues-140029823.html). Quoting from the Yahoo News article: ‘In the letter to the debate commission and Page, the coronavirus activists said the LGBTQ community was ‘in crisis’ thanks in part to the pandemic and the policies of the Trump administration.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So I guess if you’re LGBTQ you can currently be discriminated against…how despicable! All discrimination is wrong! All segregation is wrong!””

Biblical Response:  “Really? Even discrimination and segregation of those who commit rape, murder, etc.? Isn’t that what prisons are for? Oh, you say…well, not those. So, who gets to decide who is allowed what behavior? The legislature? The courts? If you say ‘yes,’ then it was once okay to own people (slavery). Well. ‘no’ you say. That is morally wrong. That is against God’s law. I’m glad you brought Him up. It seems like the Creator should have total say over His Creation. What is acceptable and unacceptable should be His sole purview. And passing laws that agree with His law should mean a more peaceable society. And it does…presuming we all agree that there is a God…which we don’t…and there’s the basic rub. The instruction manual (the Bible) used to be the basis for most of our laws…but not any more (and the Bible’s full of prohibitions against LGBTQ: Lev. 18:22; 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9; 1 Tim. 1:10; etc.). From this point, I could go into all the societal advantages of a Christian consensus, but the length of this blog does not allow for that. Suffice it to say, we’ve come a long way…and not necessarily in a good direction.”

“Christians? We don’t believe LGBTQ are God-glorifying in their behavior…but they are no less condemned than we (though our sin is under His blood because we acknowledge the wrongness of our behavior, accept His forgiveness and seek His help). Do Christians condemn the LGBTQ? Well, let me put it this way: We hate the sin, but love the sinner. I love the way the Living Bible renders it:

 ‘The good hate the badness of the wicked. The wicked hate the goodness of the good.’ (Prov. 29:27 LB)”

What’s Happening: “The Supreme Court surprised the LGBTQ world…pleasantly. They ruled 6-3 (Neil Gorsuch surprisingly wrote the majority opinion – John Roberts surprisingly joined him…along with the four liberal justices) that Title VII’s sex discrimination prohibition included sexual orientation. There were originally three plaintiff’s, but all but one died before the court could adjudicate.  Only Gerald Bostock, the Georgia state employee who was fired after it was discovered that he joined a gay softball league, remained. There was much rejoicing by the :LGBTQ community…quoting from the NBC article: ‘Millions of LGBTQ Americans still live in fear of losing their job because of who they are or who[m] they love, so this decision is welcome news,’ said Rep. Chris Pappas, D-N.H., who is gay. ‘The Supreme Court confirmed that there must be equal justice under the law for LGBTQ Americans in the workplace. This decision gives our community dignity and legal recourse should our civil rights be violated.’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/lgbtq-advocates-plaintiffs-rejoice-supreme-203134750.html) ‘Those who adopted the Civil Rights Act might not have anticipated their work would lead to this particular result,’ Gorsuch wrote, adding, ‘But the limits of the drafters’ imagination supply no reason to ignore the law’s demands.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’m not LGBTQ…why should I care?”

Biblical Response:  “And this is the attitude of much of America…even Christian America…but there is something much more fundamental at stake here. Is the Constitution living (up to current culture’s interpretation) or is there such a thing as ‘original intent?’ Clay or Concrete? For Christians there is no debate…the law is unchanging…just like the God who Authored them…Concrete. God has long considered homosexuality, men with men or women with women, aberrant and condemned behavior (Lev. 18:20; 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9; 1 Tim. 1:10; etc.). Although the Word of God may condemn this behavior, the current interpretation of the Constitution does not (or at least it prohibits descrimination on that basis). See the rub?”

“Christians?  We believe that homosexuality (which is a choice, not a proclivity) is a condemned behavior and defies God’s created order (Gen. 1:27). Obviously, we believe in two genders, not in 58!”

What’s Happening: “It looks like an impasse has finally been reached…an ‘agreement to disagree’ is no longer satisfactory. The United Methodist Church, in a plan called ‘A Protocol of Reconciliation and Grace Through Separation’ has proposed a split of more conservative churches over LGBTQ rights. Those more lenient accept gay marriage and gay clergy; those more conservative , led by representatives in Africa and the Philippines, don’t. The proposal, unveiled yesterday, will now be voted on by the church’s General Conference in May (https://www.yahoo.com/news/methodist-leaders-propose-plan-amicable-195315904.html). Karen Oliveto, the denomination’s first openly gay bishop, said, ‘I’m actually really sad that we couldn’t build a bridge that could have provided a witness to the world of what unity amid diversity and disagreement could look like.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What a black mark on the church!”

Biblical Response:  “Actually, there are some who think even having this discussion – of whether gays should be accepted – is a black mark (not a racial comment). It is embarrassing to have to be lectured on maintaining a standard by the very people (the African and the Filipino Methodists) who look to you for an example. Compromise can become a cancer that gives no quarter…and must given none (2 Cor. 6:14-18). That homosexuality (and all its perversions – LGBT) is unrighteous is clear from Scripture (Lev. 18:22; 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9-11; 10:20; 1 Tim. 1:9-10; Rom. 1:18-32; Phil. 3:18-19; 14:23; read CLARITYs of 5/22/18, 6/5/18, 8/8/18, 11/13/18, 1/4/19, 2/25/19, 4/5/19, 12/12/ 19, and 12/16/19).”

“Still, we are to love the sinner…while hating his sin (Prov. 29:27 LB). Not having this balance is why we can only blame the increase of perversion on ourselves.”

“Christians? We don’t believe in a changeable Word of God any more than we should believe in a living Constitution (the progressives want us to interpret both by a wandering culture, whatever the present prevailing mood of a Fallen Man is).”

What’s Happening: “It’s hard to believe, but a Democrat Governor, John Bel Edwards, signed a bipartisan anti-abortion bill into law in Louisiana yesterday, making abortion illegal if a heartbeat can be detected – as early as six weeks in some pregnancies. In so doing, the Democratic Governor was only being consistent, however. Although he supports LGBTQ rights, a minimum wage increase, and many feminist initiatives (common liberal Democrat positions), he is also pro-life…quite an anomaly for a liberal Democrat (https://www.yahoo.com/news/louisiana-democratic-governor-signs-heartbeat-220316274.html). ‘I know there are many who feel just as strongly as I do on abortion and disagree with me — and I respect their opinions,’ Governor Edwards said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’m glad I don’t live in Louisiana!”

Biblical Response:  “Which, because you’re an American, is your right. If you don’t like something a state legislature does, you can always move. But Louisiana is the fifth state to pass a similar ‘heartbeat’ law…Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, and Georgia have recently passed similar legislation. And the mood in the country is such that the Supreme Court may eventually be called upon to look again at Roe v. Wade.

“Christians? Are all Christians Pro-Life? Hardly. Many are untaught. The real question is can a Christian be Pro-Choice? (notice how I framed the question – I could have called Pro-Choice the more inflammatory ‘Pro-Death’…the Pro-Choice crowd calls the Pro-Life group, Anti-Abortion or Anti-Choice) I will not judge any who claim to be Christian and are Pro-Choice. Only God knows the heart (1 Kings 8:39). God, of course, is all about life (there are over 60 scripture references in the the King James Version that establish this). He is all about getting us to choose life (Deut. 30:19). The unborn who get aborted never get that opportunity.”

What’s Happening: “Pete Bootigieg, gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and scheduled to make his bid for the 2020 Presidential race public tomorrow, has been a former colleague of VP Mike Pence, but is now a vocal critic of Pence’s Christian Conservatism. Although they collaborated on economic issues when Pence was Governor of Indiana, they now are on opposite sides, Bootigieg, if he announces he’s a candidate for the Democrat nomination in 2020, will be the first openly gay person ever to run. His campaign just reported raising $7 million this quarter (https://www.yahoo.com/news/inside-buttigiegs-complicated-relationship-pence-100034991–election.html).  ‘If me being gay was a choice, it was a choice that was made far, far above my pay grade. And that’s the thing I wish the Mike Pences of the world would understand: that if you’ve got a problem with who I am, your problem is not with me. Your quarrel, sir, is with my creator,’ said Bootigieg.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “See, he can’t help who he is!”

Biblical Response:  “Has he tried? I don’t know… In the first place, I’d capitalize ‘Creator.’ It seems that you would want the favor of Someone you’re accusing of making you gay. Of course, Pete might not think that’s a bad thing. I (and the Scriptures) might disagree – Lev. 18:22, Lev. 13:20, 1 Cor. 6:9, 1 Tim. 1:10, etc. Sometimes, we may feel our making is opposed to popular culture…but the cure is not to change the culture, but to change ourselves….and the only one we have please is God, anyway. It may not be easy, but He’ll supply the right desires and actions that please Him (Phil. 2:13). ”

“Christians? We don’t judge Bootigieg or Pence. Truly THAT is above our pay grade.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us (and others) to resist the temptation to make life all about fulfilling our sexual desires; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening: “Taken separately, Lori Lightfoot’s recent successful bid for Chicago’s Mayor and ‘Mayor Pete’ Buttigieg’s run for the Democrat nomination for President (he’s a two-term Mayor from South Bend, Indiana) is no big deal…but these are not isolated occurrences. There are now 37 openly LGBT Mayors, 1 Governor (Colorado), 8 Representatives in the House, and 2 Senators in the Senate. The issue has become a non-issue (https://www.yahoo.com/news/lgbt-progress-seen-lightfoots-win-rise-mayor-pete-212023074–election.html). ‘”The real news is not that openly gay candidates are successful, but that being openly gay has become irrelevant. Here are two people with fresh ideas and a new vision for the future. Voters don’t care about their sexual orientation. That’s a sea change,’ said former President Clinton advisor, Richard Socarides.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What does sexual orientation have to do with anything? If they have good ideas, I say more power to them.”

Biblical Response:  “Thankfully, you are not in charge…GOD  IS! This is still His world (Ps. 95:5). There are many things which are neutral…sexual orientation doesn’t happen to be one of them (Lev. 18:22; 20:13, 1 Cor. 6:9: 1 Tim. 1:10; etc.). And just because a practice has become popular or acceptable, doesn’t make it right. As we continue to spiral downward as a culture, the may be many issues that become non-issues for the majority. What has that got to do with people who follow God?”

“Christians? My main concern is that we might send the wrong signal to the LGBTQ community. While we are to abhor homosexuality, we are not to ostracize the homosexual. Sure, there may be more collateral damage in their practice (many young people have been assaulted by a gay or lesbian babysitter or relative), but in a separation-from-God issue, homosexuality is no worse than any sin. What is to be our attitude toward them? Prov. 29:27 LB says: ‘The good hate the badness of the wicked. The wicked hate the goodness of the good.’ We may not like a person’s behavior, but we are called to show them love.”

What’s Happening: “The recent victories of Terry Miller and Andraya Yearwood of Bloomfield High School in the state track meet in Connecticut, have many calling foul…since they are both transgender and competing with ‘cisgenders,’ (girls identifying with their birth gender). Obviously, something needs to be done to level the playing field. Today state track meets…tomorrow, the Olympics. (https://www.westernjournal.com/transgender-sprinters-finish-1st-2nd-girls-indoor-track-championships/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=WJBreaking&utm_campaign=breaking&utm_content=western-journal). ‘We all know the outcome of the race even before it starts; it’s demoralizing,’ said cisgender competitor Seline Soule.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Don’t transgender athletes have the right to compete, too?”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps…but that’s not even the question, from my perspective. Did God make a mistake? Quoting from my book, ETHOS, How Should We Then Think?

There are many who would like to redefine the family. But God, Who created us, had a different idea in mind when He created us male and female (Gen. 1:27), and the Creator generally has the say over His creation.

However, He made Man unique, not just giving him a flesh and blood body, but also giving him a soul…and in so doing made him a rational and willful creature ,giving him the ability to weigh options and choose the course he would take. Having choices does not change our created nature, though. It may seem cheaper to run a car on water, but it was made with gasoline in mind.

Is homosexuality biblical? Are people born with a proclivity for a certain sexual orientation? What part does environment have to play? Should homosexuals have positions of leadership in the church, Boy Scouts, or sports teams? These and other questions need to be addressed.”

What’s Happening: “Chris Pratt, famous actor from The Guardians of the Galaxy, and attendant at Hillsong Church, argues with a post from Ellen Page that claims  his church is anti-LGBTQ. Brian Houston, founder of that church has been quoted as saying: ‘We do not affirm a gay lifestyle’ and won’t let gay men or women hold positions of leadership in the church (https://www.yahoo.com/news/chris-pratt-responds-ellen-pages-criticism-churchs-lgbtq-stance-says-open-doors-absolutely-everyone-012229700.html).

‘My faith is important to me but no church defines me or my life, and I am not a spokesman for any church or any group of people,” Pratt posted. ‘My values define who I am.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Doesn’t the article say that Pratt has been divorced? Doesn’t God hate divorce? (Matt. 19:8)”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, some translations may render it so (other translations do not). Actually, Prov. 29:27 says best God’s nuanced attitude: ‘The good hate the badness of the wicked. The wicked hate the goodness of the good.’ (LB) God hates the sin, but loves the sinner.”

“Christians? In our disdain of LGBTQ people, we should condemn their lifestyle WHILE welcoming them. Over-eating, workaholism, murder, child abuse…these are all equally reprehensible in that they all separate us from God, but we can walk victoriously above these sins. We send a mixed message when we turn our back on people who are or were caught up in these behaviors. Our repulsion at the collateral damage that some sins wreak must never put us off to those who commit such things.”  

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to find the balance between loving the sinner and hating the sin; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening: “Announcing on January 12 that she would run for President in 2020, Tulsi Gabbard (Democrat Rep. from Hawaii) apologized again for her past statements made against the LGBTQ community. She might have been bending to the prevailing cultural wind…her past statements and actions were particularly condemning (https://www.yahoo.com/news/tulsi-gabbard-apologizes-past-anti-gay-views-195302777.html). Supporting her mom’s views, she was earlier in her life quoted as saying, ‘This war of deception and hatred against my mom is being waged by homosexual activists because they know, that if elected, she will not allow them to force their values down the throats of the children in our schools.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “People have a right to change their views, don’t they?”

Biblical Response:  “Of course they do…even if they are just ‘going along, to get along.’ They also have the right to join in the fate of those they have previously condemned (for that fate, you need to read: 1 Cor. 6:9-10 and 1 Tim. 1:8-11).

You certainly get smooth sailing by running with the wind, but tacking against the wind might take you more in the right direction. Sure, the sailing is more difficult and the opposition will mean it takes you longer to get there, but you might like the destination more.”

“Christians? Standing against the cultural winds has been our lot for centuries (even millenia), but the truth is as unchanging as God (Heb. 13:8)…that’s how you know it’s the truth.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may our leaders speak the truth in love; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “A 9-year-old boy, Jamel Myles, declared himself to be gay last summer and after four days of bullying at school, committed suicide. He started wearing fake nails to school and apparently took the other students’ recommendations to kill himself…he was found at home (https://www.denverpost.com/2018/08/27/denver-elementary-student-suicide/). ‘My child died because of bullying. My baby killed himself,’ said the boy’s Mom, Leia Pierce.”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Where do kids even get the idea to question their sexuality at that age?!”

 

Biblical Response:  “Have you been asleep…or are you just totally unaware of the culture war going on all around you? With transgenders reading storybooks to kindergartners and gay pride parades celebrating society’s acceptance of the homosexual community…and the adding of the ‘Q’ (Questioning) to the LGBT moniker…no wonder a boy thinks he should be a girl. Add to that the cruel reality of childhood bullying and the rise in childhood suicide rates and you get tragedy.”

 

Christians? We believe the greatest tragedy of all is that the concept of a loving God, Who (by the way) does not make gender mistakes when He creates us, has been removed from public schools (Engel v. Vitale, in 1963). The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 (passed by the Second Continental Congress) created the impetus for public schools and stated (Sect., 14, Article 3): ‘Religion, morality, and knowledge, being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.’ Our Founders knew something we’ve obviously forgotten. God help us (Phil. 4:6)!”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, forgive our stupidity of trying to be ‘tolerant’ …of trying to please everybody…and disappointing You;  in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
