CLARITY – 9-25-18 The Loneliest Job

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-25-18

The Loneliest Job

What’s Happening: “18-year-old Aldi Novel Adilang, was adrift for 49 days before he was rescued by a Panamanian-flagged vessel off Guam having floated off his moorings over 1,000 miles away. His job as a lamplighter on a floating shack designed to attract fish with a light may be the loneliest task on the planet. He gets paid by his Indonesian employer just $130/month ( He said he survived on fish and salt water wringed from wet clothes when his supplies ran out. This is the third time this season his raft has broken its moorings.

Knee-Jerk Response:  “This is where you learn to talk to yourself or go crazy.”

Biblical Response:  “Indeed, one might wonder at the boy’s sanity for even taking the job in the first place! I guess it depends on your options…or your destiny. The thought that Christ CHOSE to go o the cross for us (Luke 22:42) makes many question His sanity…or His power. The only reason His act is not considered suicide (he submitted to his capture even healing one of his captors – John 18:10), is that He had the right to lay down His life (John 10:18).”

“Christians? Being a lamplighter might indeed be the loneliest job on earth (though we might argue we are all called to be Lamplighters),but dying for Mankind’s sin is a lonely task, too (Matt. 2:55-56).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, let us take solace in the fact that You will supply sufficient grace for the task at hand…with the calling comes the strength; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
