CLARITY – 8-25-20 Justice is Coming

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-25-20

Justice is Coming

What’s Happening: “The California Supreme Court ruled Monday, overturning the death penalty for convicted murderer Scott Peterson. He was found guilty of murdering his pregnant wife and disposing of her body at an old fishing haunt of his. Testimony from Amber Frey, that Peterson was dating her and told her his wife was dead…a full month before her death…was particularly damning at his trial. Over objections from the defense, several jurors who objected to the death penalty were dismissed in jury selection;  it was this that caused the justices to vote to overturn unanimously. Scott Peterson, 47, will spend his life in prison without the possibility of parole (https://www.yahoo.com/news/california-high-court-rejects-scott-172805032.html). Quoting his lawyer, Mark Geragos, and the Associated Press article: ‘Geragos said he does not expect prosecutors to retry the penalty phase. ‘Frankly, I think the only reason that they sought the death penalty was to get a guilt-prone jury panel,’ he said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Which is worse, death or a living-death, knowing you can never be paroled?”

Biblical Response:  “Good question…and that’s only man’s justice. Unless he repents, God’s justice will be even harsher (Rev. 21:8). There’s nothing that can be done to bring back his wife, or Connor, eight months carried and still in the womb. And her family will not get the closure the death penalty would have provided. They’ll have to be consoled by their knowledge of the impending ultimate justice. May he repent.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in ultimate justice … and we properly fear (Matt. 10:28).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we ask you to be merciful to Scott Peterson…and to the family of his wife…whatever that means; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

CLARITY – 5-23-20 You Couldn’t Pay Enough

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-23-20

You Couldn’t Pay Enough

What’s Happening: “Salah Khashoggi, the son of murdered Jamal Khashoggi, spoke for the family when he forgave the killers of some Washington Post journalists. Activists, who believe that de facto leader of Saudi Arabia, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is behind Jamal’s murder and dismemberment, also believe that much money and pressure from Salman is behind it all. According to Sharia law, the killers’ death sentences will likely be commuted (https://news.yahoo.com/sons-murdered-saudi-journalist-khashoggi-forgive-killers-025248954.html). Quoting the AFP article which appeared yesterday: ‘His family’s pardon is expected to spare the lives of five unnamed people sentenced to death over the murder in a December court ruling, which was lambasted by human rights groups after two top aides to the crown prince were exonerated.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I think Mohammed bin Salman is guilty!”

Biblical Response:  “I think we’re never going to know…at least not on this side of glory. There’s not enough money in the world to obtain forgiveness of even a little white lie, much less a murder-dismemberment…or any killings.  Whether Salah or his siblings or anyone forgives any crime will not change the judgement God will mete out…it’s not called the Final Judgment for nothing. (Matt. 7:22 MSG).There is only one payment that gets any notice by God: Christ crucified (Acts 4:12; 1 John 2:2).””

“Christians? We believe that ‘nothing but the blood of Jesus’ is sufficient for payment of any sin…and all sin…past present, and future. Which is Good News to us (Acts 10:36)!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, thank You for Your condescension and Your generosity; we have benefited greatly by Your FREE forgiveness…free to us…infinitely costly to You; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 3-20-20 There’s Justice Here and There’s Justice There

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-20-20

There’s Justice Here

And There’s Justice There

What’s Happening: “In an article released earlier today (it’s was Friday earlier in India), four convicted rapist/murderers were hanged amidst cheers and celebrations in New Delhi for the 2012 gang rape on a New Delhi bus. At the time, there was a public outcry condemning years of poor treatment of women and demanding swift justice (to have any justice in under a decade is remarkable). A fifth suspect hanged himself in prison and a sixth suspect was a minor. He served three years in a juvenile detention facility, Quoting from the Associated Press article: ‘India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Friday that justice had prevailed…’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/india-hangs-4-men-convicted-110654411.html). ‘”Together, we have to build a nation where the focus is on women empowerment, where there is emphasis on equality and opportunity,’ Modi said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Didn’t Amnesty International protest the barbaric use of the death penalty?’

Biblical Response:  “Yes, but that doesn’t make them right. And, whether the death penalty is a deterrent or not is not the final arbiter of right and wrong. Who should determine whether or not the death penalty is appropriate? Nope, not even the law, a judge, or a jury…actually, only God…and He’s already had plenty to say on the subject (Ex. 21:23; Deut. 19:21; etc.).”

“But that’s just justice here on earth (physical justice…temporal justice).  More to be feared is ultimate justice (spiritual justice…eternal justice – Luke 12:5:

‘But I will forewarn you Whom ye shall fear: Fear Him, which after He hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear Him.’ (KJV)

“Christians? Oh, we believe in ultimate, spiritual, and eternal justice. We also believe: ‘Justice makes hell necessary; mercy makes heaven possible.’ Are those four rapists/murderers in heaven or hell? That’s above my paygrade. Only God knows the heart (Acts 15:8, 1 John 3:20-21). Some of them could have repented.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to keep short accounts with You and learn to rejoice at ultimate justice; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 3-7-20 No Mystery v. Much Mystery

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-7-20

No Mystery v. Much Mystery

What’s Happening: “‘A lot of mystery’ is the best way to accurately describe the case of the missing Idaho kids in Yellowstone last September, reported by CBS News yesterday. A girl, 17-year-old Tylee Ryan, and her 7-year-old brother, Joshua ‘J.J.’ Vallow have been missing since September and the FBI hopes someone on vacation in Yellowstone may have caught the family in a photo, though J. J. was seen on a doorbell camera running across a yard a week after the Yellowstone trip. Lori Vallow, the kids’ mother, saw a judge yesterday in the missing children case. The kids’ uncle, Alex Cox, seen in the last photo of the family, is under investigation for the mysterious death of Tammy Daybell, in October. Chad Daybell, just days after Tammy’s death married Lori. Then Cox mysteriously died (https://www.yahoo.com/news/fbi-looking-anyone-saw-missing-124254044.html). Quoting the article, ‘Lori Vallow is scheduled to be in front of a judge at 2 p.m. [yesterday] local time in Idaho. It will be the first time in months she will be in a room with the children’s grandparents, who had asked for a welfare check that set the investigation into the whereabouts of the children in motion in November.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Too much mystery for me!”

Biblical Response:  “Me, too. I’ve read and reread the article (maybe 6 times), and I can’t make heads or tails of everything. Kids missing, mysterious deaths, an impromptu marriage…I’m sure somebody knows what’s going on…but who knows? Sure, Lori probably knows…but something she may not be counting on: God knows, too.  A reading of Psalm 139 might be disconcerting to her. There is no mystery for God. He is everywhere…no wonder He knows everything. He is a personal eyewitness of all events…all murder, where the kids are…everything! And He is the ultimate arbiter of justice. If not here, then there.”

“Christians? We believe in ultimate justice (Mal 3:18):

Then you will see the difference between God’s treatment of good men and bad, between those who serve Him and those who don’t. (LB)

We also believe that God sees everything (scriptures above) and reveals when and what He wants (Deut.29:29):

The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may  observe all the words of this law.’ (NASU)

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may we trust in Your truth, timely revealed; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 3-6-20 A ‘Little’ Harsh

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-6-20

A ‘Little’ Harsh

What’s Happening: “In a tragedy of neglect and harshness, a 6-year-old boy, who was confined to a closet with his 7-year-old brother for stealing food, died. His parents, Anthony Jose Archibeque-Martinez, 23, Elizabeth Archibeque-Martinez, 26, and Ann Marie Martinez, 50, the boy’s grandmother, are being charged with first-degree murder and two counts of child-abuse, in a story reported earlier this week. The 7-year-old is malnourished and both boys don’t look their age and there are two other children, a girl, 4 and a toddler, 2, that are with the Dept. of Child Safety (ttps://news.yahoo.com/arizona-child-dies-parents-shut-173243024.html).

Authorities said, ‘During questioning of the grandmother, she admitted she was aware of this condition the boys were kept in and admitted to disciplining the children when they stole food,’ authorities said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’m glad I wasn’t raised in that home!”

Biblical Response:  “Me, too. I mean, I’m all for discipline, and parents are mandated to raise their kids (Eph. 6:4), but not in anger. Children are a sacred trust. No discipline is pleasant (Heb 12;5-11), but it should be correctional, not abusive. Children need to be raised in such a way that they are fully prepared to face their future and make a positive difference (Gen. 18:19):

Yes, I’ve settled on him as the one to train his children and future family to observe God’s way of life, live kindly and generously and fairly, so that God can complete in Abraham what he promised him.’ (The MESSAGE)

“Christians? As the above scriptures indicate, we believe in discipline…but as proof of love (Rev. 3:19).

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to discern and discipline in love, not in anger or frustration; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 3-2-20 Maybe a Little Too Suddenly

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-2-20

Maybe a Little Too Suddenly

What’s Happening: “A former youth pastor, Jacob Malone, 37, serving 3-6 years in prison for being convicted of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl in Pennsylvania, was arrested it was reported yesterday for offering $5,000 for the revenge-killing of the senior pastor of Calvary Fellowship and the judge in the assault case. He is being accused of giving an inmate in the minimum security prison the funds. Being that he’s already serving time, it’s a cinch he’ll not be paroled at his next parole hearing (https://www.yahoo.com/news/former-youth-pastor-arrested-revenge-225510081.html).  Quoting from the article by Tim Stelloh of NBC News: ‘It wasn’t clear Sunday what role Wiggins (the pastor) played in Malone’s conviction, but Malone also offered money for the murder of Somerset County Common Pleas Judge Jacqueline Cody, who presided over his sexual assault case, the DA’s office said.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’d better do a background check on my church leadership!”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe whatever hiring committee that gave Malone the nod should have done their due diligence. I mean, we do live in a fallen world (Gen. 3; Is. 53:6), and few are squeaky clean (maybe that’s why few should apply), even after the Lord gets hold of us, but the Scripture warns us ‘not to lay hands on anyone suddenly’ (1 Tim. 5:22). Oops! Apparently some did.”

“I don’t want to be too harsh (not knowing the particulars), but leaders are supposed to be role models…patterns to be followed ( Tim. 3:1-13). It’s a shame to any church to have the ‘world’s’ system correct the church. Still, I’m glad he’ll get his due…here or there.”

“Christians? To reverse an old saying, we believe that ‘many are chosen…but few are called’ It’s an honor to be called…but you are being called to self-denial, self-sacrifice..,not self-indulgence (1 John 2:15-17).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to qualify to be held up as examples…even if we are not called, we can at least strive (2 Tim 2:15);  in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-8-20 You’ll Have to Read it Twice…At Least

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-8-20

You’ll Have to Read it Twice…

…At Least

What’s Happening: “Picture a police investigation white board, crowded with photos and lines connecting them…and a big question mark at the center (I had to read the article several times to follow the nefarious actions of the messed up family). Lori Vallow, who said she was god and on a ‘special mission,’ is being questioned by Chandler, Arizona Police in connection with her two missing children, murders of two husbands (or former husbands – I’m not sure), and the divorce of her current husband, Chad Daybell, 49, whose former wife may have died under suspicious circumstances…confused? (https://www.yahoo.com/news/mom-2-missing-kids-said-172131843.html). ‘Mother has also never contacted Father about JJ’s (7) well-being or requested any parenting time with JJ. Father is extremely concerned that Mother would abandon JJ and take JJ’s necessities without even attempting to communicate or see JJ,’ court documents said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Maybe she’s a cult member.”

Biblical Response:  “You think?! She might make Patty Hearst (probably the most famous cult-member of the 20th Century) look like a choir girl. There is so much divorce, murder, and neglect in her dossier…and then to claim she is god! Who knows what she’s guilty of, but this I do know, the title of God is reserved for only One (Exodus 20:3), and He takes a dim view of competition (Ex. 3:4-6).”

“Christians? We believe there is only one God and He knows the truth of all matters (read Ps. 139)…where those kids are, who killed whom, etc. There will be ultimate justice and I tremble at the guilty parties’ fate. Like has been said in other CLARITYs, ‘Justice makes hell necessary; mercy makes heaven possible.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help the authorities bring justice on the earth; eternal justice we leave humbly to You; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-23-19 Slow But Sure

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-23-19

Slow But Sure

What’s Happening: “Today courts in Saudi Arabia sentenced five to death in Kamal Khashoggi’s murder (3 others got a total of 21 years; 11 were tried). Remember that news event and the brouhaha surrounding it? Some thought Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was behind it (most of the Democrats in Washington, the U.N. special commission appointed to look into the matter, Turkish authorities, etc.); some thought he learned of it afterwards (Trump, many of the Republicans in Congress, etc.). I guess the truth may never be known this side of eternity (https://www.yahoo.com/news/saudi-sentences-5-death-jamal-095437622.html), ‘The prosecutor sentenced five hit men to death but did not touch those who were behind the five,” Yasin Aktay, the leader of the ruling party in Turkey (he was also a friend of Khashoggi), told The Associated Press.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “When will justice ever be served?”

Biblical Response:  “I guess it depends on to whom you talk. Obviously, some think it already has, while others think it probably won’t ever occur. Both may be wrong. One thing is for sure, truth and ultimate justice may be slow, but it surely will come…God will see to that. Besides, justice here and now (temporal justice) only affects the here and now (Heb. 9:27)…eternal justice is…well…for much, much longer, And, in the scope of eternity, is quite swift.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in ultimate eternal justice. And that we are all subject to it (Lk. 13:1-3). However, the good news may be bad news for some. Sure, we are all resurrected (Acts 24:15), but to what? Eternal life or eternal death? As the saying goes: ‘Justice makes hell necessary, mercy makes heaven possible.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to not paint with too broad a brush when we are not privy to all the facts…and to rely on You because You are; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-20-19 Emotions NOT in Check

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-20-19

Emotions NOT in Check

What’s Happening: “A tragedy unfolded last weekend as two wedding-crashers, brothers, Josue Castaneda Ramirez, 19, and Rony Castaneda Ramirez, 28, beat to death the groom, Joe Melgoza, at his reception in Chino, California. An altercation escalated into a fight and the groom succumbed to his injuries at Chino Valley Medical Center. It was announced last Tuesday that the two alleged perpetrators would face murder charges. The two were arrested and held without bail (https://www.yahoo.com/news/california-groom-beaten-death-wedding-042617267.html). One of the groom’s relatives, Alice Alvaez, was quoted as saying, ‘He was taken from us in such a tragic and horrific way, He leaves behind his daughter Lilly who will be in good hands with Joe’s family.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Perhaps the two’s hot-headedness was why they were not invited to the wedding.”

Biblical Response:  “Who knows? There are a lot of unanswered questions here, but one thing is for certain: anger can lead to destructive violence. We are told, ‘Be angry, but sin not’ (Eph. 4:26). It is not a sin to experience any emotion…life would be pretty dull if passionless. The trick is to exhibit a little self-control BEFORE things get out of hand. The problem arises when we ‘fallen creatures’ (read Gen. 3) allow our passions to rule. Maybe we don’t exhibit any self-control because we were never told ‘no.’ If we did not get any discipline from the outside, we may look within for self-discipline and find the cupboard bare.”

“Christians? True believers have access to the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23), one of which is self-control. Without this, our unregenerate passions may rule…by default…and passion, unchecked, can escalate to violence.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to not let emotions take control…it doesn’t glorify anyone to let passion take over; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 11-20-19 What Love Looks Like?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 11-20-19

What Love Looks Like?

What’s Happening: “In Cripple Creek, Colorado, Patrick Frazee, 33, was given a life + 156 years-sentence Monday for killing his fiance’ Kelsey Berreth, 29, by bludgeoning her with a baseball bat, then burning her body…her 1-year-old daughter, whom she had had with Frazee, was in a storage closet nearby. His ‘friend,’ Krystal Lee, faces three years for evidence tampering. She tried to use Kelsey’s cell-phone to deceive investigators about Berreth’s whereabouts. The jury only deliberated four hours and sentencing came only an hour later by the judge (https://www.yahoo.com/news/vicious-senseless-patrick-frazee-gets-114607879.html).  ‘Your actions were vicious, senseless, without reason or explanation,’ Judge Scott said to a dispassionate Frazee.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “If this is how he treats somebody he loves, I’d hate to see how he treats somebody he hated!”

Biblical Response:  “Really! I can’t even imagine… There was a time when an engagement period was for trying on mentally the idea of marriage. Before that it was called betrothal, and was even more serious (Deut. 22:23-30). Apparently, he got to have his way with her by virtue of a promise…and apparently the promise was worthless. I don’t know which is worse – what he did…or what he didn’t do. Obviously, the judge (and the law) thought the former was worse. A man’s word used to be his bond. What happens to a culture where words (and promises) are meaningless? Just read the papers or the news feed on your device.”

“Christians? We believe that words are valuable and only the precursor to the actions they betray (John 14:1012). What does love look like? Like God (John 3:16; Rom. 5:8; 1 John 4:8).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to only promise what You can help us fulfill; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
