The Question Is: Who Was Disorderly?

What’s Happening: “This time it was the police doing the disturbing, if you talked to bystanders, diners, and Molly Dillon, policy adviser to State Senator Alessandra Biaggi who observed the whole scene. Originally police were called and responded to reports of protesters blocking traffic, but there was reportedly no one in the street when the 100-200 police officers rushed the crowd, arresting twelve, eight of them receiving summons for disorderly conduct. The good news was that there was no violence…on the part of the protesters, or the police (https://www.yahoo.com/news/nypd-officers-charge-small-group-180424670.html). Quoting from the NBC News article: ‘The police department said in a statement that ‘a group of roughly 150 demonstrators came to the 6th precinct and blocked traffic’ and that officers took people into custody ‘after multiple warnings to clear the sidewalk. Brad Hoylman, a state senator from Manhattan, said his office was in touch with police about the use of force.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “It depends on who ‘they’ are. If the police, then they were just responding to a call…there may have been people in the streets previously. If you are talking about the protesters, perhaps they should have kept to the areas permitted for protesting…and apparently that does not include the street or the restaurants. If you are talking about the diners…surely they were only there to eat.”

“Disorderly Conduct and Disturbing the Peace are real crimes and have real penalties and are based on our preference for a peaceable society (1 Cor. 14:40).”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in order and decency (as the above scripture might indicate, though some would argue it was taken out of context). In any case, we need to submit to governmental authorities (1 Pet. 2:13; Rom. 13:1).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to ‘bend our knee’ realizing, ultimately, that all legitimate authority comes from You; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

Overloaded and Underreported

What’s Happening: “Increasing its reported death figures from COVID-19 Friday by almost exactly 50% (from 2,579 to 3,869) China said overloaded health systems were to blame for the mistakes made. By contrast, just NY has said their death toll is now over 10,000….of course, they’ve added in about 3,700 deaths that never tested positive for COVID-19, but were presumed to have. Does anyone else think the numbers…on both ends…haven’t been manipulated.?! (https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-wuhan-china-abruptly-increases-death-toll-by-50-2020-4) ‘Do you think you’re getting honest numbers from some of these countries? Do you really believe those numbers in this vast country called China? Does anybody really believe that?’ asked President Trump.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess you really can’t believe what you read.”

Biblical Response:  “You might be painting with too broad a brush. It really depends on where you read it….but politics has spun many a tall tale…political spin in China AND New York have, no doubt, skewed reality. That’s why the source is so important. For example, do you believe what you read in the Bible? You must take into account that at the First Canonical Council in 325 B.C. (also known as the Council of Nicea), those attending had to show proof on their bodies of Christ’s ownershup (read: torture scars) to gain admission. Also, to the man, His apostles, some of whom are credited with writing the bulk of the New Testament, all were martyred for what they believed (except John…although he is credited with martyrdom…it’s not his fault that he miraculously survived being boiled in oil…of course he had not received the Revelation yet, either!). The Word of God is totally accurate in its original languages.”

“Christians? We believe in the inerrancy of scripture and in its purpose (2 Tim. 3:16). All else is questionable. We must regard the political, cultural, and historical contexts before we can determine anything’s accuracy. Everybody’s got an agenda.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us read between the lines to determine the truth of a matter; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-3-20 Wrongheaded Compassion

CLARITY

Wrongheaded Compassion

What’s Happening: “There are two events that may be connected…maybe coincidental. After the stabbing death of two outside a busy pharmacy in the UK by a recently released terrorist, the government may be rethinking early prison release and considering indefinite sentences for some (https://www.yahoo.com/news/uk-announce-rules-militants-street-101912779.html)…in other news, New York’s recent bail reform may have spawned a rash of repeat offenders, as a man is being held on suspected rape charges post release (https://nypost.com/2020/02/02/brooklyn-rape-suspect-was-free-under-nys-new-bail-reform-law/). They may not be connected….but they might. Have laws, designed to protect an unsuspecting public, become too lenient? Has the desire for change outrun the reality?”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “There are some who are incarcerated unjustly and some who have changed, but don’t have the opportunity to demonstrate it. What about them?”

Biblical Response:  “True, but that sounds more like a courtroom problem or a failure of the rehabilitation efforts. You’ve heard of ‘scared straight?’ Punishment or rehabilitation that scares no one, changes no one. In our desire for criminals to be reformed, we, by our early release programs and bail reform, have tried to increase opportunity without change as a prerequisite. Wanting a good character doesn’t equate with being of good character. Hear what Jeremiah 6:14 (LB) says:

‘You can’t heal a wound by saying it’s not there.’”

“As Isaiah 53:6 says:

‘All we like sheep have gone astray…’ Not most…ALL. Thankfully, there is a cure for waywardness (Rom. 6:23). However, without a nature change, being good just doesn’t happen. What are punishment and rehabilitation for?  To make you ask yourself, ‘How did I get here?’ ‘How can I get to a better place?’”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in change alright, But we also believe it is not automatic (John 3:7-15). Repentance is being sorry for past behavior…sorry enough to submit to change.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to find the balance between demanding true repentance and compassion; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-18-19 Fickleness

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-18-19

Fickleness

What’s Happening: “Maybe Amazon just wants to be wanted; maybe, protesters to Amazon’s decision to build a distribution center in Queens, New York, turning the famous smile logo upside down was an insult too far; maybe it’s the fact that Bezos is against unionization; maybe, since Amazon has not responded to queries concerning its motivations, it means we’ll never know…in any case, the promised billions in tax savings AND the economic boost that the 25,000 jobs would have brought, will now not materialize and Cuomo and De Blasio are happy and sad (https://www.yahoo.com/news/gone-york-minute-amazon-deal-125329879.html). ‘Offering massive corporate welfare from scarce public resources to one of the wealthiest corporations in the world at a time of great need in our state is just wrong,’ said New York State Sen. Michael Gianaris and New York City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, Democrats.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So it’s off, now? Right? … Isn’t that a good thing?”

Biblical Response:  “For now…and maybe it’s not such a good thing. Not only is there the loss of 25,000 jobs, there’s also the loss of the positive economic input they would have brought to local  businesses AND all the taxes those paychecks would have paid. Sometimes, we believe all the hype the MSM puts out and we become the unintended collateral damage.

“Christians? The Scripture says that, ‘fear has torment’ (1 John 4:18) . Fickleness is a byproduct of fear. The Bible warns against that, too (James 1:6-8). Whether Jeff Bezos wanted to bless NY or bless his own company…well, I guess we’ll never know. Probably a little of both.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to listen to the voice of Your Spirit. Only then can we truly respond correctly and without fear; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-6-19 Fake Cops?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-6-19

Fake Cops?

What’s Happening: “The ‘Patrol Cars’ for the new Muslim Community Patrol in Brooklyn, NY look amazingly like real police cars and have some wondering if New York is about to adopt Sharia law. A similar initiative in East London had dubious results (https://dcalert.com/2019/02/05/is-new-york-endorsing-sharia-law/). NY resident John Cardillo, tweeted: ‘Not at all comfortable with this. ‘Muslim Community Patrol’ in NYC, driving cars that look identical to NYPD RMPs.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Great! Just what we need – somebody else to answer to!”

Biblical Response:  You can respond in obedience if you want…as for me and others, I’d recommend asking for ID#s.They’re just wanting to keep neighbors from showing their prejudices against Muslims. That’s understandable. Perhaps not wise, with 9/11 still fresh in every New Yorkers’ mind,…but understandable. With all the ‘Fake News’ and so forth out there, the last thing anyone needs is another authority structure presenting themselves as real. That may not be their intent, but it’s their effect.”

“Christians? While we are to submit to authority (1 Pet. 2:13-15), we are not called to answer to illegitimate power (Acts 4:1-21). God trumps all other authority. Obeying Him might have negative short-term consequence, but long-term it is wise. Eternity is a long time, and He holds all the cards.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to live peaceably with all men…as far as it is possible (Rom. 12:18); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-17-18 It Took a Miracle

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-17-18

It Took a Miracle

What’s Happening:  “How about some good news for a change? An American Airlines ticket agent, working at Sacramento International Airport, called the sheriff when two girls, 15 and 17, tried to check in for a flight to New York…which may have been for the purpose of human trafficking. The agent, Denise Miracle (yes, that’s her real name) is being called a hero (https://www.yahoo.com/news/american-airlines-agent-saves-2-153552330.html). Quoting Miracle, ‘It was a first-class ticket. It was very expensive. I told a supervisor, ‘I’m going to call the sheriff. It just doesn’t feel right to me,’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess their parents were relieved!”

Biblical Response:  “Shocked is more likely. Their girls had told them they were spending the night at a friend’s house. They were lured by a free ticket (though the one-way ticket they’d been told was 2-way) and an offer of $2,000 to model for a video. Wouldn’t they have been surprised?”

“Christians? We’ve all got a price…hopefully Christians realize they’ve been bought with a price (1 Cor. 7:23). Being “not your own” (1 Cor. 6:20) takes a little getting used to. We have to ask the Owner for permission for everything questionable. The trouble comes when we want to do (or allow to be done) things we used to do, but that are no longer allowed.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give us the discretion and the discernment we need…the discretion not to succumb to our old defaults, and the discernment not to ask in the first place for permission to do those things we already know He will respond to negatively; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
