CLARITY – 4-29-20 Lack of Knowledge

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-29-20

Lack of Knowledge

What’s Happening: “Speculation persists in the disposition of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Some say he is brain dead. Some say North Korea is just being overwhelmed by a mass exodus of Chinese fleeing the coronavirus and Kim is ‘social distancing’ …in the extreme! (although North Korea has maintained they have NO cases of COVID-19). Is the situation dangerous? Compound the instability of the nuclear potential in chaos, with the current state of flux in the Kim/Trump denuclearization talks, a potential vying for power between Kim Jong Un and his sister Kim Yo Jong. and our lack of intelligence coming from the North…well, you may have the ingredients for a perfect storm…of the highly destructive variety (https://news.yahoo.com/dead-or-alive-the-mystery-over-kim-jong-uns-health-demonstrates-the-limits-of-us-intelligence-on-north-korea-090031301.html). Quoting Jenna McLaughlin, the National Security and Investigations Reporter for Yahoo News today: ‘One possible upside to the current possible crisis is that if North Korea is simply suffering from the impact of the pandemic, it could offer the intelligence community a rare opportunity, said Nixon, the former CIA leadership analyst.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Again, so nobody really knows…let’s just wait and see.”

Biblical Response:  “Not that we have much choice…at least in the intelligence community (for additional input, read yesterday’s blog). The truth is, Somebody knows…but He’s not telling (which is His prerogative – Deut. 29:29). Do we need to know? Maybe. The real problem is what Hosea 4:6 promises:

“My  people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” (NASU)

“Christians? We believe that knowledge is the key to peace…both eternal (read Matt. 7:23 and underline/italicize the word ‘knew’) and here on earth. There is an obscure passage that emphasizes the value of the otherwise few soldiers (only 200) that were listed as the sons of Issachar (1 Chron. 12:32); valued because they ‘understood the times, and knew what Israel should do.’ This is what America needs today.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to pursue both kinds of peace…and realize that knowledge is the key; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-28-20 Talk About “Grave’ Condition!

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-28-20

Talk About ‘Grave’ Condition!

What’s Happening: “Is he dead,,,is he recovering from surgery…will his sister now become North Korea’s first female dictator? Questions and rumors swirl about Kim Jong Un, as he has not been seen publicly since April 11, not even attending his grandfather ‘s birthday celebration (as his grandfather, Kim Il Sung,  is the founder of communist North Korea…a big deal). Everybody has an opinion: China is sending a medical investigative team, South Korea says he’s ‘alive and well,’ North Korea maintains he is fine…even Trump says he knows…but is apparently not telling (https://news.yahoo.com/south-korean-official-says-kim-164825490.html). Quoting the Business Insider article that appeared a couple of days ago: ‘Our government position is firm,’ Chung-in Moon, a foreign-policy adviser to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, told Fox News. ‘Kim Jong Un is alive and well. He has been staying in the Wonsan area since April 13. No suspicious movements have so far been detected.’”’

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What’s the big deal? Just because he has a finger on the nuclear button…hmmm…I guess that is a big deal!”

Biblical Response:  “You think?! Either our intelligence mechanism is incompetent or we know, but are playing our cards close to the vest…probably, the latter. And it does matter! Perhaps no one could be a worse nuclear actor…even his sister…but this headline-seeking ego maniac doesn’t live a very healthy life, anyway. He’s obese, chain smokes, and at 36…well, you know why China, his main backer, sent a medical investigative team. I can imagine a certain Jewish council doing the same thing at the grave of Joseph of Arimathea almost 2,000 years ago. Of course, they found it empty (Matt. 27:62-28:6)…boy, did they have some explaining to do!”

“Christians? We believe not only was He risen from the grave, but that nothing else matters, by comparison (1 Cor.15:14-22)…including the disposition of a certain North Korean dictator!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to react in fear, but to act in faith; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-21-20 Reports vs. Facts

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-21-20

Reports vs. Facts

What’s Happening: “Kim Jong-Un’s absence from his grandfather’s birthday celebration (Kim Il Sung) has caused much speculation and generated reports that he was recovering from heart surgery due to excessive smoking, dangerous obesity, and fatigue. Seeing as his father and predecessor’s death was not known (even by his closest advisors) for a few days, it is no wonder rumors swirl. Some say they have intelligence on the subject which confirms Kim’s (now in his thirties) ill health. Others say it’s all just smoke and mirrors – designed to keep everyone guessing.and his name in the news…still, his appearance a few years ago with a cane doesn’t help (https://news.yahoo.com/seoul-plays-down-report-north-korean-leaders-health-050913307.html).Quoting from the AFP article: ‘Excessive smoking, obesity, and fatigue were the direct causes of Kim’s urgent cardiovascular treatment,’ it cited an unidentified source inside the country as saying.””

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Who do you believe?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, freedom of the press has taken a real beating lately, huh? With accusations of Fake News (some of them well-founded) and intentional (and unintentional) spin, it’s hard to know whom to believe? Thankfully, there’s Someone whose word is dependable (Ps. 89:35; 1 Tim. 1:2). The real rub comes in our ability to discern what the Holy Spirit is saying…and then there are those things He wants to remain a secret (Deut. 29:29). Most of the time, we have to rely on common sense…even if the truth is sometimes not very titillating.”

“Christians? We believe in facts. It’s just sometimes they are hard to know. Even when we do, we have to think Christianly about them…and that goes against our human nature. That’s one of the reasons why we need a new nature (Eph. 4:24):

‘Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy’ (NLT).

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to act on the facts, not react to reports; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-24-19 A Gift That is No Surprise

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-24-19

A Gift That is No Surprise

What’s Happening: “What is Kim Jong-un’s ‘surprise gift’? That is the question of the day…and it could arrive today…or at least soon. Some, examining carefully those sites where intermediate-range ICBMs have been traditionally worked upon, are looking for anomalies that might reveal an upcoming test launch…an escalation in the ongoing denuclearization debate. Others have suggested something more benign might be in the offing. In any case, fear makes for good press (https://nationalinterest.org/blog/korea-watch/note-north-koreas-kim-jong-un-choose-your-christmas-gift-trump-wisely-107971). Quoting from the article by Daniel DePetris yesterday: ‘The period between the summit in Hanoi and the meeting at the DMZ in June was an unproductive stretch. It took nearly four months after Trump and Kim’s DMZ meet-and-greet before those discussions actually happened. And they finally did, the talks concluded in a huff after a single day.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “A gift is a gift is a gift. I think there’s too much made over this one.”

Biblical Response:  “And maybe you’re right…at least I hope so…the question is: can we take the chance? Prudence and history tell us to keep one eye open.”

“One gift that should not come as a surprise – it’s been prophesied since Gen. 3:15 – is the gift of the Savior (John 3:16). Kim may have a ‘gift’ that is good or ill, but there’s no surprise about a virgin conceiving (Is. 7:14) and giving birth to the Son of God in Bethlehem (Mic. 5:2). And that is Good News, that the Lamb of God has come…of course, He will someday come again as a Judge, and that may be bad news for some. Kim, are you listening?”

“Christians? The Gift of God’s Son is what Christmas is all about. And we are grateful for this ‘no-surprise’ gift.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be cautiously optimistic; not naive, but believing the best about folks…with one eye open; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-1-19 Are a Kiss and a Hug Next?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -7-1-19

Are a Hug and a Kiss Next?

What’s Happening: “History was made over the weekend…responding to an impromptu Tweet by President Trump, Kim Jung Un, leader of North Korea, walked up to the border and shook hands. What followed was an invitation by Kim for the President to step across that border for a short stroll in the North and a 50-minute private talk. Mostly symbolic for sure, unless it’s followed by words AND actions. Denuclearization must be more than rhetoric or good intentions  (https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-heads-historic-dmz-meeting-050909054.html). ‘I was proud to step over the line, It is a great day for the world,’ said President Trump.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “To quote somebody, ‘Talk is cheap’”

Biblical Response:  “Many people would like to claim to have originally said that, but they were

probably quoting Ecclesiastes 5:7, which actually says that.

‘Talk is cheap, like daydreams and other useless activities. Fear God instead.’ (Eccl. 5:7 NLT)

Agreed, talk is cheap. It can be ‘daydreams’…or it can be the start (or restart) of something more significant. Time will tell. It’s not indefinite, either. We must remember that the centrifuges continue to spin. Will the North Koreans follow up their denuclearization rhetoric? Maybe….I hope so.”

“Christians? There’s plenty here to pray about. It all comes down to another scripture.

‘Man proposes, but God disposes.’ (Prov. `19:21 LB)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may those negotiating realize the seriousness of the consequences of failure; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 11-16-18 Trust But Verify

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 11-16-18

Trust But Verify

What’s Happening: “Ronald Reagan may have said it first (referring to former Soviet promises to de-escalate), but now President Trump gets to use it as a doctrine in real time. And there has only been mixed progress in North Korean president Kim’s pledge to denuclearize. True, North Korea has not done any nuclear testing or launched a missile since the pledge, but there seems to be evidence of further new development…but the sanctions are still on….and also the U.S. has suspended joint U.S./South Korea military games. Obviously, the jury is still out…amid hopes (https://www.yahoo.com/news/pence-says-trump-likely-meet-kim-2019-wont-050838225–business.html). Vice President Pence declared, ‘The plans are ongoing. We believe that the summit will likely occur after the first of the year, but the when and the where of that is still being worked out.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “A lot of talk…”

Biblical Response:  “True…but talk is preferred to war, right? Of course, I’m concerned that North Korea is just using talks of peace as a stall technique…while centrifuges continue to spin. But you also have to give diplomacy…and sanctions…a chance. The only problem is that  I think the Chinese are ignoring sanctions to help the North Koreans…and to further delay the convenient distraction that this dance provides.”

Christians? The concept of ‘trust but verify’ is biblical. Moses (and later Joshua) sent out spies (Num. 13:2; Josh. 2:1) to determine what the truth of a matter was. It would be great if we were omniscient, but we’re not…God understands our need for verification and He doesn’t want us to operate under presumption. So, what are we called to do? Pray.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to have the faith and hope to trust, but also the wisdom to verify; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-27-18 Honor and Respect

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-27-18

Honor and Respect

What’s Happening:  “The flight that left North Korea with 55 sets of U.S. servicemen remains  (5,300 are thought to exist) from the Korean War marked several things: a promise made and kept (both Trump’s and Kim’s), the 65th anniversary of the armistice signed which ended the conflict, the renewal of hope that denuclearization of the peninsula will continue,  etc. (https://www.yahoo.com/news/north-korea-returns-remains-55-034657808.html). ‘It is a solemn obligation of the United States Government to ensure that the remains are handled with dignity and properly accounted for so their families receive them in an honorable manner,’ White House Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee-Sanders said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “55 of 5,300! Big deal!”

Biblical Response:  “It is a big deal to the families belonging to those remains…and although there are still a lot to go, it’s a start. Also, if this is any sign that NoKo is still interested in denuclearization, I’m all for it. We’ve got a long way to go for sure, but the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.”

“Christians? While we are for all due honor and respect shown those who gave their ‘last full measure of devotion’ (quoting the Gettysburg Address), the remains are only what’s left of the servicemen’s physical bodies. Their souls and spirits are already where they should go (Heb. 9:27). It’s too late for many of them, but we should redouble our efforts to those who survive these men. Is anyone ministering to them?”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, let us give honor where honor is due, and effort where effort is due; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-4-18 Good News or Bad

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-4-18

Good News or Bad

What’s Happening:  “It’s anybody’s guess ,really, the replacement of the DPRK’s top military brass…is it good news or bad? Analysts say that this gives Kim Jong-un more control of the  Korean People’s Army (KPA), preparing for the summit with Trump by surrounding himself with more like-minded leaders. If Kim really intends denuclearization, this might be good news. If he intends to keep North Korea on its historic path of deception and promises made, but not kept, it’s bad. The South thinks it’s good, but someone with “no dog in the hunt” needs to be heard (https://www.yahoo.com/news/north-korea-shakes-military-leadership-ahead-trump-summit-033547734.html). ‘If Kim Jong Un is set on making peace with the U.S. and South Korea and dealing away at least part of the nuclear program, he will have to put the KPA’s influence in a box and keep it there,’ said the director of the International Affairs Group, Ken Gause.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Surely, it doesn’t matter much….this summit.”

Biblical Response:  “Not unless you mind the first truly nuclear war! What’s at stake is more serious than anyone can possibly imagine…it’s certainly nothing to yawn at. While I do understand the obvious advantage of approaching peace from a position of strength (thank you, Mr. Trump), I want someone in our delegation in Singapore that has nothing to prove (thank you, Mike Pompeo).”

“Christians? Oh we believe in Good News (this gives us hope)…and know the repercussions of bad news (Read Rom. 7 sometime). What we need June 12 is good news… ‘Good news from far away is like cold water to the thirsty.’ (Prov. 25:25) Yep. That just about sums it up.”

CLARITY -5-11-18 KKK is not Always Bad

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-11-18

KKK is not Always Bad

What’s Happening:  “At least not when you are talking of the three Kims (Tony Kim, Kim Hack-song, and Kim Dong-chul) that a fourth Kim (Kim Jong-un) released from North Korea and met President Trump and First Lady Melania, Vice President Pence and Second Lady, Karen on the tarmac at 3:00am at Andrews AFB in Maryland (https://www.yahoo.com/news/3-americans-held-north-korea-070448351.html). Trump offered, ‘This is something that people did not think was going to happen for many many years and a lot of bad things could’ve happened in between,’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Couldn’t they have picked a more civilized hour?”

Biblical Response:  “I’m sure if you asked the Kims that were released, any hour was just fine,..they were just glad to be free. And the hour seemed ironically appropriate…I mean, the leaders of the free world and their wives had to lose a night’s sleep to be there to greet them…and they did!

“Christians? Freedom is always a wonderful thing…if there are no strings (read: ‘chains’) attached. It seems out of character for Kim Jong-un to release anyone as a ‘goodwill’ gesture. He probably should have never imprisoned them in the first place. Of course, real freedom always deals in truth (John 8:32).”

CLARITY – 4-23-18 Pompeo and Circumstance

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-23-18

Pompeo and Circumstance

What’s Happening:  “Having already established a relationship of diplomacy with Kim Jong-Un and been confirmed earlier by a bipartisan majority to be CIA Director, it may be hard for the Senate NOT to vote to confirm Mike Pompeo,  but they will likely try. Already, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (who votes today) has said they will not vote to recommend him, The full Senate vote occurs later this week (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/04/23/pompeo-trumps-pick-for-secretary-state-faces-tough-battle-for-senate-confirmation.html). ‘We certainly hope some members will change their minds,’ White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders-Huckabee said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Going to talk with Kim was kind of like assuming too much, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe…of course, you might think such a move might satisfy his critics on the diplomacy front (it’s kind of hard to say he’s  not diplomatic when he’s just pulled off the diplomacy move of the decade!). Probably, this is just another example of Trump-hate. You know, that political bent of being against everything Trump.”

“Christians? It’s hard to be against sin and not the sinner, but that is what we are told to do (“The good hate the wickedness of the wicked, and the wicked the goodness of the good.” [Prov. 29:27 LB]) What am I saying? That you cannot oppose the man  just because you oppose his personal preferences.”
