In The End, Truth Always Prevails

What’s Happening: “Yesterday, in a 3:50am raid of his home, Mustafa Sonmez, an economist famous for anti-government rhetoric, was detained and questioned about his recent anti-Erdogan (President of Turkey) tweets. This warning does not mean the columnist and television commentator won’t be charged or arrested for ‘seditious’ activity in the future … Turkey may pay lip service (no pun intended) to freedom of speech, but it is only applied in one direction (https://www.yahoo.com/news/turkey-detains-economist-insulting-president-105226727.html). ‘The police knocked on my door at about 3:50 a.m. They took my deposition at the police headquarters and then put me under custody. They had a file of about 20 of my recent tweets. I told them what I did constituted criticism, not insult,’ Sonmez said. It is interesting to note that an insult in Turkey against the President gets the same punishment as an insult against Mohammed … the punishment can be death.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “That would make for fewer insults…hmmm…maybe we should try that over here.””

Biblical Response:  “Maybe fewer insults…but more fear. I’m sure Erdogan’s government was trying to instill in Sonmez fear or intimidation.

How can you really have freedom of speech or religion and Christianity really have the influence it was intended? Because our message will prevail (Matt. 16:18). Any message that requires government support to thrive must be weak in the first place. (Hear that abortion providers?)

.

“Christians? We believe in the ultimate superiority of our message. Why after nearly 2000 years has Christianity not swept the world? (Perhaps, you are saying to yourself: This guy can’t add. Well, first, there is a recording error of 4 years…Jesus was really born on 4 B.C. Then there’s the fact that the Holy Spirit was not poured out until Pentecost, 33 A.D. (Luke 24;49). Christianity is still just one of many religions because our message is rarely spoken with ‘signs that follow’ (Mark 16:16-18).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give us the confidence that our message will prevail, the courage to call on Your power, and the patience to wait till You move; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 3-9-19 Yes, In America

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-9-19

Yes, In America

What’s Happening: “A Valley View Elementary School 4th grade student, William McLeod, was made to wipe off his Ash Wednesday cross in front of his class this week in Bountiful, UT…and an apology to the student and his family followed from a spokesperson for the school district, Chris Williams (https://www.yahoo.com/news/utah-teacher-forces-boy-wipe-180920691.html).   ‘I asked (the principal) if she read the Constitution with the First Amendment and she said, ‘No’ and ‘Ohhhh,’ Karen Fisher, the boy’s Grandmother, recounted.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Surely, not in America!”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, in America…the home of the persecuted…and apparently, uneducated. Unfortunately, it doesn’t surprise me that anyone in the public school system is more concerned with the offense of others than she is of the offense of Christians…or is unfamiliar with the Constitution or the First Amendment. We aren’t requiring the history of the United States to be taught in our public schools anymore. Ironically, the Mayflower brought pilgrims fleeing religious persecution in England. Our Founders must be doing cartwheels in their graves!”

“Christians? Oh we are not unfamiliar with persecution (John 15:18). In fact, it is quite common…but not in the ‘land of the free.’ I guess this why it makes news. The brouhaha in India and Pakistan is really over religion…they don’t have such freedoms there. We should be thankful it’s not everywhere…and educate our schools once again. You know what they say: ‘Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.’ (Winston Churchill in 1948 to the House of Commons)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to pay attention to the cultural erosion all around us…and do something about it; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-18-19 On the Rise…No Surprise

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-18-19

On the Rise…No Surprise

What’s Happening: “Open Doors, an NGO that keeps track of deaths proven to be strictly for religious reasons, reports a huge increase in the level of persecution of Christians – up 13.9% in just one year – mostly in Nigeria. Although now there’s almost daily fear in India and 1 in 3 Asian Christians experience severe persecution, China actually outlawed Christianity (https://www.yahoo.com/news/one-three-christians-asia-faces-persecution-report-004259377.html). ‘Africa has become the home of violence against Christians,’ claims Michel Varton, president of Open Doors France.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Not being a Christian, how does that affect me?”

Biblical Response:  “Actually, it should trouble everyone. Anytime any group, religious or otherwise, is singled out for punishment just because they believe differently, the freedom of all is in jeopardy. For Christians, this may not be new (John 15:18), but it’s still should be worrisome for everyone.”

“Christians? Although Christianity will prevail (if, as Christians believe, it is inherently superior) as the only real solution to Man’s problems (read the Sermon on the Mount” – Matt. 5,6,7), it will only happen as religion is allowed to have free expression.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give our persecuted brethren the grace to withstand the onslaughts of the enemy; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-13-18 Like Gasoline on a Fire

Like Gasoline on a Fire

What’s Happening:  “In case you haven’t been aware (or are living your life in a phone booth…wait, that metaphor is obsolete…or are living your life under a rock), there is a huge officially sanctioned persecution of Christians going on in China. The ‘underground church,’as large as 70 million (excluding Catholics), is under assault with church closings and threats (https://www.yahoo.com/news/prominent-chinese-pastor-defiant-church-closure-104056258.html). A pastor of one such 1,600-member church in Beijing, Jin Mingri, is reported to have said, ‘A church is more than just about a space. It’s about gathering together to worship, it’s about belief.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “At some point, won’t the underground church become extinct?”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not. Historically, some of the Church’s largest periods of growth came during the greatest persecutions (one only has to look at the birth of the underground church in China, when Mao killed 70,000 Christians per month during the Red Guard revolt of the 1970’s). The message of salvation is irrepressible.”

“Christians? We should not be surprised when the world hates us. It hated Him first (John 15:18). How do we respond to persecution? Be led of the Spirit. Some have done good to their persecutors (Rom. 12:21) Others, when threatened with bodily harm, did as they were called to do anyway (Acts 5:40-41). It’s kind of like trying to put out a fire with gasoline (Acts 5:42 through Acts 6:1).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, of course we pray for persecuted believers everywhere, but give us the courage of our convictions and may we do something today that fully convinces others of our primary love of You; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-10-18 Persecution is Not Unfamiliar

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-10-18

Persecution is Not Unfamiliar

What’s Happening:  “Unfortunately, we live in an uncivil society…at least that is what former Trump adviser Steve Bannon learned when he was recently berated while browsing inside Black Swan Bookstore, but he wasn’t alone (Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders was refused service at the Red Hen Restaurant, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen received chants of ‘shame’ and ‘end family separation’ by protesters in a Mexican restaurant, etc.) https://www.local10.com/news/politics/steve-bannon-called-piece-of-trash-by-heckler-at-bookstore). ‘Steve Bannon was simply standing, looking at books….’ the owner said..”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.’ I guess we will see more resignations like Scott Pruitt.”

Biblical Response:  “Running away from problems solves little (though his family saw some relief, no doubt). I’m all for free speech OUTSIDE. I’m also for businesses making a profit INSIDE. While the owner of the Red Hen may have had the right to refuse Sarah service, it may not have made good business sense. And the last time I checked, conservatives is not a protected class (nor should it be).”

“Christians? We are to be examples of civility (2 Tim. 2:24-25; Rom. 15:1-2). Sure, we are not to love the world (1 John 2:15), but our protests against it should take on a different tenor. One of the early church’s first protests was held below the Tiber River Bridge in Rome as they caught babies being tossed by inconvenienced upper-crust Roman families attempting infanticide.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, teach us to object without being objectionable; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-21-18 Western Civilization at Risk

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-21-18

Western Civilization at Risk

What’s Happening:  “Everywhere you look, says one article, Christianity is at risk…in the media, in schools, in politics. Persecution in some countries means certain death or ethnic cleansing, in others, being blackballed from from competition or employment. This is nothing new in the predominantly Muslim Middle-East, but in the West it’s a new and growing trend (http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2018/04/21/how-long-will-be-allowed-to-remain-christian.html). ‘How long will I be allowed to remain a Christian?’ one believer asked.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “All religions are the same aren’t they…just traditional fairy tales that make suffering and death explicable…an opiate.”

Biblical Response:  “Actually Karl Marx said it better: ‘”Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people’ Of course, you may hesitate quoting the most famous Communist philosopher. All of Western Civilization was built on Christianity (which historical fact is no longer taught in our public education system).”

“Christians? We are no strangers to persecution (2 Cor. 23-28), and the Lord always provides sufficient grace for the moment (2 Cor. 12:9). Still, that’s no reason to be overcome (Rom. 12:21).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to counter lies with Your truth and overcome the natural tendency to be complacent. Help us to identify with those who suffer, before we suffer ourselves (Rom. 12:15); in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
