 CLARITY

Some Sad…Some, Not So Much

What’s Happening: “Earlier today, the President and First Lady tested positive for COVID-19 and tweeted they would ‘get through this together.’ Trump may have contracted the virus by traveling with close aide Hope Hicks, who has tested positive. All three are in quarantine, and there may be others. The Trump Administration has not been keen to wear masks, but they have always made them available at his rallies (see CLARITY blog of 7/1/20…subdeo.com). He often does not wear them and has said he was downplaying the virus in order to not create a panic. During the prescribed 14-day quarantine period he has cancelled the upcoming previously scheduled campaign events…it is not known if he’ll attend the second debate currently scheduled for the 15th. Biden will, no doubt, send his condolences, but is he really sad? Maybe… (https://www.yahoo.com/news/president-trump-says-he-and-the-first-lady-have-tested-positive-for-covid-19-054718866.html). Quoting the Yahoo News article by White House Correspondent Hunter Walker: ‘Trump’s doctor, Sean Conley, said in a statement that ‘the President and the First Lady are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I wonder how this will affect his re-election chances?”

Biblical Response:  “Good question. He’s pretty resilient though. It will be a temptation for former V.P. Joe Biden to gloat a little, though it would certainly be bad form…he’d be wise to send flowers. As far as it affecting Trump’s campaign? It might…positively (never underestimate the power of sympathy – Rom. 12:15)! No doubt, Trump will send out a ‘tweet-storm.’”

“Christians? We believe in the power of sympathy…but we also believe in the power of prayer (James 5:16). Our job as Christians is to pray for ‘all who are in authority’ (1 Tim. 2:2 NASU).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to remember to pray…we certainly have much that should be on our list; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

CLARITY – 5-19-20 Is Justice Blind?

CLARITY

Is Justice Blind?

What’s Happening: “It seems that the row that has developed between Judge Sullivan (the one who is the last resort for Democrats upset that Trump got elected and are attempting to convict Gen. Michael Flynn when the DOJ has dropped its case against him) and the DOJ, has morphed into a question of whether Justice is really blind. Judge Sullivan has come under increasing pressure from Democrats to appoint another prosecutor, or perhaps convict Flynn of another crime, or… (https://news.yahoo.com/michael-flynn-case-judge-sullivans-202856926.html). Quoting the opinion piece in USA Today yesterday, by Jonathan Turley: ‘Indeed, former President Bill Clinton’s attorney general, Janet Reno, warned Congress against courts intruding on Justice Department decisions, stressing that ‘our Founders believed that the enormity of the prosecutorial power — and all the decisions about who, what, and whether to prosecute — should be vested in one who is responsible to the people.’’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What does convicting Gen. Flynn have to do with President Trump?”

Biblical Response:  “It’s guilt by association. Those wanting to oppose Trump (read: Democrats) want the public to think that there must be something shady about Trump. I mean, after all, Trump appointed an ‘admitted liar’ as National Security Advisor…you can see how this taints the President. Not satisfied with the fiasco of the Russian probe, or the Mueller report, this is their last stand…in an election year. Really, it’s all about the upcoming election.”

“Is justice blind? Or does it have an agenda? Judge Sullivan, according to the article, wants to tip the scales of Lady Justice against Flynn (and hence against Trump). The question is, whether or not the American public will notice.”

“Christians? We believe there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed (Luke 12:3). Will it be in time? That’s the real question.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us objectively help Lady justice to keep her blindfold securely in place…and discover the freeing truth (Jn. 8:32); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 8-4-18 Freedom of Opinion

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-4-18

Freedom of Opinion

What’s Happening:  “Is a Tweet an order?…Or just an opinion? That seems to be the question in the brouhaha caused by the left’s reaction to a recent Tweet by the President. In it the President said the AG ‘should’ end the Mueller probe, which the President repeatedly Tweets is a ‘witch hunt.’ Are his Tweets protected by the First Amendment or do they represent obstruction? (https://www.yahoo.com/katiecouric/yahoo-news-explains-obstruction-tweet-152033182.html). Adam Schiff Tweets:’The President of the United States just called on his Attorney General to put an end to an investigation in which the President, his family and campaign may be implicated. This is an attempt to obstruct justice hiding in plain sight. America must never accept it.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So the President has chosen social media to express his angst…don’t we have freedom of opinion in this country?”

Biblical Response:  “I’m with you…though technically we have ‘freedom of speech’…what’s speech is for the courts to interpret…though I think Tweets are to be included if burning the American flag is. Like the old saying goes, ‘Opinions are like noses…everybody’s got one.’”

“Christians? That’s different for us…Americans may have freedom of speech, but we don’t (Eph. 4:22-32; 5:4). We are to exhibit a little more self control than what we might like to.Things might be lawful for us, but not all things are expedient (1 Cor. 6:12). License to express comes with some responsibility, too…at least for us.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to judge too quickly in those areas where we find ourselves often guilty; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-13-18 In the Ear of the Hearer

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-13-18

In the Ear of the Hearer

What’s Happening:  “President Trump, in a bipartisan, behind-closed-doors meeting Thursday, may have said some remarks that some in his own party found regrettable and distasteful, but Democrats are insisting were racist and hateful. It depends on who’s account you believe (https://www.yahoo.com/news/president-trump-denies-calling-haiti-shithole-country-152929482.html). ‘Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country,’ Trump tweeted Friday morning.“

Knee-jerk Response: “If he didn’t say it, I’m sure he was thinking it.”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe…but it was ‘behind-closed-doors’ (which apparently means something else to many). I wasn’t there…and neither were you.  I’d certainly take Donald Trump’s word over Dick Durban’s. Does he make remarks I wish he’d said differently? Yes, but then I’m not under the pressure he is, either. Don’t get me wrong…I’m not making excuses for him. A President is supposed to be an example for the rest of us (of course, I like the tenor of his decisions…even if I don’t like the tenor of his voice). Maybe it takes this kind of man (my wife and I watched a talented Gary Oldham play a quirky Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour last night) for such a time as this.

“Christians? Should we complain when He chooses ‘the foolish things of the world to confound the wise’? (1 Cor. 1:27-28) Let us not be so quick to judge. The rule is: Go to God about people and people about God.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we desire to be discrete in our own personal lives; help us not call anyone to a standard we don’t live by ourselves; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
