No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

What’s Happening: “Franklin Pierce Adams may have said it first (in his satirical poem by the same above title), but the visit on Tuesday by the President at the memorial to the 11 gunned down in the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, was not welcomed by all. His motorcade went through a group of protesters who chanted ‘turn you back’ to POTUS. Although the President and First Lady were welcomed by the rabbi of the synagogue and met and commiserated with some of the victims, some thought the visit distracted from the funerals (https://www.yahoo.com/news/pittsburgh-comes-together-mourn-victims-protesters-turn-backs-trump-012912167.html). ‘There are many, many constituents who’ve reached out to me by phone and email concerned that the president’s visit today will add to the trauma of the community and many community members’, said City councilor Erika Strassburger. ‘I won’t say that necessarily speaks for every single person in my district, that’s just what I’ve heard.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “He probably came just for show.”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps…of course, his daughter and son-in-law are Jewish, he has proclaimed Jerusalem as that nation’s capital, and Trump condemned Iran for its anti-semitic rhetoric…but what do I know? There are those who blame the President for everything…even for doing things that are just part of the job…like attending memorials.”

“Christians? We’re all for commiserating (Rom. 12:15), for sharing others’ grief. And we are not unfamiliar with the concept  that ‘No Good Deed Goes Unpunished’ (John 15:18). Still, we are called to extinguish evil with love (Luke 6:27-35).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, it may be natural to return bad words spoken against us, but, thankfully, the Lord has given us a new heart, and He will help us react supernaturally instead; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-22-18 Not-nicety

Not-nicety

What’s Happening: “Everybody’s heard the non-specific accusations of incivility underscored by the “Jobs Not Mobs” sloganeering, but here’s something specific that alternately makes you sick, then makes you proud. When a heckler decided to verbally accost Sen. Mitch McConnell and his wife in a Cuban restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky several patrons came to his aid (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/punk-mcconnell-diners-plans/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribune).  ‘Oh yeah,’ the heckler said, ‘Why don’t you get out of here? Why don’t you leave the entire country?’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Alright, so the heckler gets no ‘nicety’ points. So what?”

Biblical Response:  “So what?! There was a time in America when most parents taught their kids growing up how to be civil, even if you disagreed. Today, people can’t even spell incivility…they have to resort to something that has less syllables “not-nicety’…which may not even be a word. What happened to manners? Instead of increasing our volume, let’s increase our sense…making a logical defense of our position. Perhaps we might even learn our position is indefensible (another 5-syllable word).”

“Christians? We are told to be civil (Rom. 12:18). We are also told to be ready to give a defense (1 Pet. 3:15). Thankfully, in this country we can do the best expressing of our opinions at the ballot box…and we’ll get that opportunity soon.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us sow more sugar…and reap a crop much more palatable; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-18-18 Freedom Isn’t Free

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-18-18

Freedom Isn’t Free

What’s Happening:  “Dong Yaoqiong, 28, an activist in China, was detained recently by the Communist government of China when she splashed ink on a poster of President Xi Jinping…no surprise there (as many from Tiananmen Square days will attest). She actually expected to be arrested and she was; a reasonable expectation…those in China who want the freedoms Americans enjoy must also pay the price our Founders and others have paid (https://www.yahoo.com/news/chinese-woman-detained-tossing-ink-xi-poster-activists-053044789.html). AFP reports: ‘The US-based Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) activist network said authorities have also taken the woman’s father and a Chinese artist into custody after they sought to publicize her plight on social media.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Her act was stupid!”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not…at least to her. She protested to get arrested…and she was successful. Sure, it’s a shame China does not have true freedom of speech…(neither do we on some college campuses)…but things will change for them only with bloodshed…at least that has been the historical fact.”

“Christians? Whether it is freedom of expression or freedom from the slavery of sin (Rom. 6:10), we believe in bloodshed. Our Founders shed blood for the former, our Savior shed His blood for the latter. Like this woman, we know that freedom isn’t free.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to applaud the courage of others as they seek freedom, and be brave (but wise and patient) ourselves as we seek to effect godly change; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-26-18 Dissent OK, Harassment Not

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-26-18

Dissent OK, Harassment Not

What’s Happening:  “The rest of the story…not only was Sarah Huckabee-Sanders ejected from the Red Hen restaurant (which you could argue was the owner trying to keep her employees and other patrons sheltered from controversy), but the owner of the Red Hen organized a protest at the restaurant across the street that was then attended (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/new-development-in-red-hen-story-huckabee-says-owner-tailed-sarahs-family-after-she-left/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=CTBreaking&utm_campaign=breaking&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘By the way, Laura’ former Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee, said in a radio interview with Laura Ingraham, ‘There’s a part of the story that hasn’t been told; you’re going to be the first to hear it. Once Sarah and her family left, of course she was asked to vacate. Sarah just went home. They had sort of had enough….’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “‘Kind of ironic’ is an understatement, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “Right…but not surprising. Intolerance may mask itself as tolerant, but the truth usually comes out in the end. Are we, as Americans, called to tolerance? Yes. But the restaurant owner has the right of free speech, too. Sometimes, that may mean ejection from a restaurant. Sometimes it may even lead to a peaceful protest…but in no case should it rise to the level of harassment. I cannot be the judge. I was not there. But I dare say it was judged.”

“Christians? We are called to be tolerant, but to stand for our principles, too (Rom. 12:18; Heb. 12:14) Where do we draw the line? Let the Holy Spirit guide you.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, make us discerning purveyors of Your truth; while we want to stand up when we should, we don’t want to lay down when we shouldn’t: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
