 CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-5-20

Enough is Enough!

What’s Happening: “The Associated Press, in an article by Sophia Eppolito, reported in the Salt Lake Tribune that the Utah Sheriffs’ Association and Republican US Representative Chris Stewart had staged a protest late Thursday outside the location of the Tribune’s printing press, objecting to a cartoon that the Tribune had published. In the cartoon, the police had been depicted as linked with the racism of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). At the protest, they demanded that the paper retract the cartoon and apologize…which the Tribune said they would not do (https://www.yahoo.com/news/utah-police-frustrated-anti-law-221401630.html). Quoting from the article: ‘It was time as our silent voices have really been just in a listening mode of what all the concerns are now to say you know what enough was enough and you’ve crossed the line,’ Anderson [Dept. of Public Safety Commissioner]said Friday.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I mean, there is a need for reform…but systemic racism.?!…defunding the police?!…are you kidding me?!”

Biblical Response:  “Not only have there been calls for both defunding and complete abolishment of law enforcement, those calls seem to encourage the violence that often follows the protests in cities across America. Whatever happened to respect for authority? (Rom. 13:17; 1 Pet. 2:13-14). Less policing = more violence…NOT LESS! It doesn’t take a Rhodes Scholar or a rocket scientist to see that! Of course, respect for authority is a Christian principle and thanks to Engle vs. Vitale (1962) and Abington School District vs. Schempp (1963) the Bible and prayer have been removed from public schools. God help us.”

“Christians? We believe in obedience to authority (Rom. 1:5) and in respect (the scriptures above). Of course, when human authority contradicts God’s law, we have the duty to disobey (Acts 5:29). This may cause us to suffer some consequences, but God’s grace is sufficient.’’

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we pray that You will return our country to sanity; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-31-20

Words Matter

What’s Happening: “A Syracuse University Chemistry Professor, Jon Zubieta, who has worked there for 17 years, was placed on Administrative Leave because of his reference in a syllabus to Covid-19 as the ‘Wuhan Flu’ and the ‘Chinese Communist Party Flu.’ Students of Asian background have wondered if the President’s reference to Covid-19 as the ‘China virus’ (or statements like the ones in the syllabus) would cause there to be racial prejudice against them. Reacting to an official complaint that was filed, the administration of the University said in a statement: ‘We will not allow any member of our community to violate the University’s commitment to a safe, inclusive and welcoming learning and living environment’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/syracuse-university-professor-placed-leave-181247950.html).  In a separate incident reported by the Business Insider yesterday, Arkansas County Sheriff, Todd Wright, as secretly recorded by the mother of his children, Desiree Middlebrooks, used several racial slurs when referring to a black grocery store employee. Eventually, at the encouragement of former colleague Bobby Webb (and the unanimous ruling of Arkansas County Quorum Court), he laid down his badge and gun and resigned (https://www.yahoo.com/news/arkansas-sheriff-secretly-recorded-using-213228679.html). I guess words do matter.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Be careful what you say…be even more careful what you write…”

Biblical Response:  “…and even more careful what you think! (Prov. 23:7). As Samuel Smiles (author and Scottish government reformer…1812-1904) said: ‘Sow a thought, reap an act; sow an act, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.’ Free thinking is what education is all about…it’s not that we’re to think randomly though…or even to think as we feel…but in school we are supposed to learn how to control our thinking…and thus our words, acts,  etc., hopefully till we come to maturity (Eph. 4:13-14). When we say anything, what matters is what is heard…that is where offense comes from…and that is why we must be careful of what is said AND heard. The Sheriff above may have meant something other than what he said. As Sheriff, however, he is supposed to have that certain level of maturity that his authority implies…if not he should resign.”

“Christians? We believe that the power of the tongue is awesome. God spoke creation into existence (Gen., 1:3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, etc.). With being given the gift of speech comes a great deal of responsibility (Num. 22:35; 1 Kings 22:16; 2 Chron. 18:15; Prov. 18:21). With the same mouth we have the power to both bless or curse (James 3:10). This awesome power ought to give us pause…and be the cause of much prayer.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to speak freely…but speak carefully, realizing we are Your spokesmen; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

CLARITY – 8-29-20 A Much Different Story

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-29-20

A Much Different Story

What’s Happening: “It’s been nearly a week since the Sunday shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha. Although the Wisconsin division of the DOJ promised a thorough investigation of the incident, protesters and rioters have jumped to conclusions and assumed Blake was just another victim of systemic racism. Blake lies in a local hospital partially (and hopefully temporarily) paralyzed from the seven shots officers at the scene inflicted upon him. Now, thanks to the Kenosha police union, we have a much different story…one involving a disobedient thief, a possible car theft in progress, a 911 call, a couple of ineffective taser shots, and a knife (https://www.yahoo.com/news/kenosha-police-union-gives-version-223333088.html). What is the truth of the matter? I guess it depends on to  whom you talk, whose narrative is interpreting the facts. Eyewitness accounts are hard to refute…especially when they corroborate…and twice M. Blake was told to ‘drop the knife’…before shots were fired. The truth of the matter may be for a jury to decide. How they decide will determine whether the public hears about the incident repeatedly by a left-leaning media, or the story gets assigned to obscurity.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “The moral of the story? Don’t mess with the folks in blue!”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not a good idea. There was a time in this country (may we return to it!) that police versions of events were believed by default. But George Floyd’s tragic death, a media who wants to support a chaotic and prejudiced narrative to score political points, a rewriting of history, and the lack of a Christian consensus has changed all that. That’s what courts and juries are for, you say. Yes, but that requires patience (Gal. 5:22), and we seem to have that in little supply, these days. Nobody wants to wait for the truth…our flesh wants us to jump to conclusions (Gal. 5:19).”

“Christians? We believe that patience and the other fruits of the Spirit are impossible for the unregenerate (if patience is difficult at best for the Christian, what hope does anyone have who has not experienced a nature change?).

“We are to respect authority (Rom. 13:1-5). Maybe if Jacob Blake had, he wouldn’t be lying in a hospital today.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to help You restore America to sanity; maybe a good dose of law and order is what is needed…guide us Holy Spirit; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

It’s Not There

What’s Happening: “In a story that appeared yesterday, it was revealed that the town council of Asheville, North Carolina, approved unanimously (7-0) that reparations be paid to black residents. While not mandating a monetary and individual payment, the council’s verbage did include increased opportunity and the leveling of the playing field. The council did allow time for comments which meant that the session went late into the night, but those comments made urging reparations exceeded those against (https://www.yahoo.com/news/historic-move-north-carolina-city-125936878.html). Quoting the USA Today article: ‘‘Hundreds of years of Black blood spilled that basically fills the cup we drink from today,’ said Councilman Keith Young, one of two African-American members of the body and the measure’s chief proponent.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess blacks should be happy everywhere.”

Biblical Response:  Maybe…but the question is: ‘Should they be? Does this spell the end of what some term ‘systemic racism?’ Is there a danger of having the sense that now things have been made right when the problem still exists? I love the Living Bible’s rendering of Jeremiah 6:14:

‘You can’t heal a wound by saying it’s not there! Yet the priests and prophets give assurances of peace when all is war.’ (Jer. 6:14  LB)”

“We must be careful NOT to ‘call those things that are  as though they weren’t.’ That is not the meaning of Romans 4:17. For too long folks have glossed over racism as aberrant behavior or people just reacting to a specific circumstance, when the ingrained treatment of people of a different color is trained in, often by well-meaning parents, who were trained by their parents, who were trained by their parents…etc. We’ve got to break the cycle…it’s got to end somewhere!”

“Christians? We believe that all Man is equal…equally in need of a Savior! Sin is the great equalizer (Rom. 3:23; 6:23). Regardless of color, we are all part of the human race (Acts 17:26), and we all bleed red. And just saying it’s not there doesn’t make racism disappear. What was trained in must be trained out. It didn’t happen overnight and won’t be solved overnight…give it time.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to walk in another’s shoes, as much as possible, before we begin to judge; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-15-20 Ungraceful Grace

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-15-20

Ungraceful Grace

What’s Happening: “Grace, a 15-year-old black girl, was sentenced to detention and led out of the courtroom in handcuffs for violating her probation – which included doing her homework. Originally charged with assault for biting her Mom, Charisse, and for pulling her hair…and later charged with stealing a phone…and later charged with stealing a laptop. Judge Brennan said the Michigan case would be up for review September 8…Grace has been diagnosed with ADHD and some think her sentence is too harsh and systemic racism might be to blame (https://www.yahoo.com/news/black-teen-didnt-her-online-194300056.html). Quoting from the Insider article, which  was co-published by the Detroit Free Press and Bridge Magazine: ‘Because of the confidentiality of juvenile court cases, it’s impossible to determine how unusual Grace’s situation is. But attorneys and advocates in Michigan and elsewhere say they are unaware of any other case involving the detention of a child for failing to meet academic requirements after schools closed to help stop the spread of COVID-19.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “For not doing her homework?! You’ve got to be kidding me!”

Biblical Response:  “Obviously, you haven’t read the whole, rather lengthy, article…just the headlines…which is typical. When you just react to the spin the media puts on things, you get a jaundiced view. Determining truth is hard work…in any political environment…still, if we want to be fair and unbiased, we must do the work…or not shoot from the hip, making snap judgments…unlike God. But you say, didn’t Moses argue with God not to punish the Children of Israel in Exodus 32:12-14?  Wasn’t God just making a snap judgment out of anger? Didn’t Moses change God’s mind because of what others might say? It apparently worked…I say apparently because he did change God’s mind…sort of…I mean,  it could be argued that God really didn’t change His mind knowing in advance how He would act in the future (Is. 46:10).”

“Christians? We believe in the hard work of determining the truth (Matt. 18:16). Do you think the witnesses mentioned in the previous verse just volunteered their testimony? They were usually sought out, compelled to testify…and then their testimony had to be corroborated. Hard work. (And we want to defund the police! Are you kidding me?!)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be willing to dig for the  truth; not just accept someone else’s interpretation; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-4-20 Shame on Hans Christian Andersen?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-4-20

Shame on Hans Christian Andersen?

What’s Happening: “Danes awakened Friday to graffiti and accusations of racism – ‘racist fish’ was spray-painted at the base of the ‘Little Mermaid’ bronze statue visited by over 100 million annually. Famed children’s novelist, Hans Christian Andersen, was honored by the 107-year-old bronze of the character made famous in the Disney movie  The Little Mermaid, but it  was ‘decorated’ protest style. This was not the first time the statue has been desecrated, suffering decapitation twice during previous encounters. But this was reminiscent of the recent Black Lives Matter message and may be tied to protests that began in the U.S. after the heinous killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last month. Further investigation is required to find what racism protesters were talking about (https://www.yahoo.com/news/copenhagens-little-mermaid-labelled-racist-102435040.html). Quoting from the Reuters article that appeared yesterday: ‘I am having a hard time seeing what is particularly racist in the fairy tale ‘The Little Mermaid,’ Ane Grum-Schwensen, researcher at the H.C. Andersen Center at University of Southern Denmark, told local news wire Ritzau.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So now even our fairy tales may be racist…”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps…a reference may be vague, but pervasive and culture-shaping…or it could be just another attempt at dividing an already divisive society. Remember, ‘a house divided against itself cannot stand’ (Mark 3:25). That is one of the tools in the liberals’ toolbox, and it’s all about the next election. If they can paint the present administration as racist, maybe they won’t lose their black constituency.“

“Christians?  While we are absolutely against racism, we are not for division (Acts 17:26):

‘…and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,’ (NASU)

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be sensitive to those that have suffered greatly at the hands of our mistakes, but wary of some people’s selfish political motives; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-3-20 A Matter of Programming

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-3-20

A Matter of Programming

What’s Happening: “500 people have been arrested in Omaha since the night of May 29, when white bar-owner Jake Gardner (38) shot and killed black protester James Scurlock (22). Gardner, who claimed self-defense, was not among them. He shot him with a pistol he carried (under an expired concealed carry permit) and though the police have been accused of systemic racism, there seems to be ample eye-witness accounts of being raised racist and examples of racism, and Gardner has been detained and questioned, he still has yet to be charged with anything. A family member recalls Gardner’s father using racial slurs when raising him (https://www.yahoo.com/news/after-a-black-protester-is-killed-in-omaha-witnesses-claim-a-rushed-investigation-ignored-signs-of-the-shooters-allegedly-190303877.html).  Quoting the Yahoo News article posted July 1: ‘After hearing nothing from authorities for more than a week, Heineman (Gardner’s cousin) decided to testify at a public hearing in Omaha, where community members had been invited to address state lawmakers about issues related to police misconduct and racial injustice.”

“‘My family has a laundry list of assault charges and a long history of racism,’ Heineman said at the hearing, describing how ‘sleepless and disturbed’ she felt ‘knowing that all the times my family members used the N-word, which was a lot, all of the times that my family made racist jokes, all of the times that my family ingrained violence into the minds and hearts and souls of their own babies, all of those things were leading up to the death of James.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So don’t move to Omaha, right?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah…maybe not anywhere in America (though it’s still the only place that has an overtly Christian founding – 53 of the 55 signers of the Declaration of Independence were Christian). There used to be a Christian consensus in America. As evidence, this quote from deist Benjamin Franklin (from his autobiography):

‘It was wonderful to see the change soon made in the manners of our inhabitants. From being thoughtless or indifferent about religion, it seemed all the world were growing religious, so that one could not walk thro’ the town (Boston) in an evening without psalms sung in different families of every street.’

Ben also famously arose at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, after a particularly heated exchange and uttered these words:

‘Mr. President: (He was addressing George Washington, unanimously chosen president of the Constitutional Convention.) The small progress we have made after four or five weeks’ close attendance & continual reasonings with each other…how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights to illuminate our understanding!…I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth – that God rules in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writing, that ‘except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.’ I therefore beg leave to move–that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven…be held every morning before we proceed to business…’”

Add to that, that Ben Franklin was arguably the least ‘Christian’ of the Founders, you can understand my historical American Christian concensusus claim.”

“But not any more. We don’t have to go to Omaha…or the 2,000 cities that have held protests since the George Floyd killing…to realize something has changed over the years. Perhaps it was the removal of the Bible and prayer from public schools (Engle v. Vitale – 1962). I guess when you sow the wind, you reap the whirlwind (Hosea 8:7).”

“Christians? We believe in a Christian consensus…not just in America, but the world (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16). Obviously, in the nearly 2,000 years since those words were uttered  (in the two previous scriptures), we’ve not done our job (so, we are partly to blame for this ‘systemic’, ‘ingrained’ un-Christian thinking). There is no good excuse, so let’s just roll up our sleeves and GET TO WORK!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to repair the breech and restore America to its roots; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-25-20 Justice Prevails

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-25-20

Justice Prevails

What’s Happening: “The Prosecutor decided not to file charges against Officer Kevin Davis Wednesday in the shooting death of 17-year-old Josh Ruffin in Columbia, South Carolina. Ruffin was initially seen in a high-crime area with a bag on his shoulder. Asked to stop for a discussion, Josh ran from Davis who chased him till the teen stopped and pointed a .45 caliber pistol at Davis. What ensued was a tragedy, by anyone’s estimation (https://www.yahoo.com/news/prosecutor-discuss-black-sc-teen-143725151.html). Black Presecutor Byron Gipson said, ‘There is no joy in this room having this conversation.’ All this adds fuel to the flames of the brouhaha over black George Floyd’s kneeling death at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’m happy for the Davis family and I weep for the Ruffin family.”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, me too. What a tragedy! Ruffin shouldn’t have been out late, especially in that area. And he should never have pointed a gun at anyone trained to defend himself…let alone a police officer. A failure of fatherhood, no doubt (it’s every father’s responsibility to teach his children respect for authority – Prov. 22:6). This does not lessen the tragedy of racism in our country or the death of Josh or the fact that we should be even having this discussion. All we can be thankful for is that justice prevailed…as much as we may not have liked the outcome, it was just.”

“Christians?  We rejoice in the truth (1 Cor. 13:6). Justice is often not pretty…often it is downright ugly…still, we should (and will) rejoice. As I’ve said many times: Justice makes hell necessary; mercy makes heaven possible.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to rejoice at the final triumph of justice…and that the painful death of our Savior was just, because He took on Himself the punishment we deserved: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-1-20 Restraint Will Win

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-1-20

Restraint Will Win

What’s Happening: “Another night of violence swept across many of the nation’s major cities last night, though peaceful protests out-numbered looting and fires. In Minneapolis, the site a week ago of the tragic death of black George Floyd, under arrest and handcuffed, there were mostly peaceful protests, though there were significant exceptions. There were over 4,400 arrests nationwide, according to an Associated Press tally, and many cities were under an 8:00pm curfew order. Across the street from the White House a Park Service building appeared to be on fire, but D.C. firemen quickly extinguished the flames. Some governors have called out the National Guard in their states…other governors have threatened that… (https://www.yahoo.com/news/minneapolis-other-major-cities-face-234559456.html). Quoting the NBC News article earlier today: ‘Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced Sunday that two police officers had been fired in connection with their involvement in the arrests of college students who were recorded on video being pulled from their car. Three officers were put on desk duty pending an investigation, Bottoms and Police Chief Erika Shields said at a news conference.  ‘I am genuinely sorry,’ Shields said. ‘This is not what we are about.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “My guess is that the rioters are not social distancing…”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not…and the masks they wear are more to protect identity than thwart infection. It seems that the rioters are more concerned with looting, fires and vandalism than they are real social change or anger over racism by authorities….and the coronavirus takes even lesser concern. The designation of Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization by the President may stymie the financial input of those who want to foment division in the country…but only temporarily.”

“The answer right now may be restraint as ‘a soft answer turns away wrath’ (Prov. 15:1). People are angry at racism and justifiably so. But REAL change will only come as folks are allowed to express themselves PEACEFULLY…the looting, fires and vandalism are only expressions of immaturity…or crude attempts by power brokers at co-opting ‘better angels.’ Authority should not react to anger, but dispassionately enforce against those who have not learned to respect private property or the rule of law.”

“Christians? What a great opportunity to peacefully demonstrate FOR love, peace, love, patience, love, kindness, love, self-control, love, etc. The Floyd family should be showered with comfort. I’m not saying that they shouldn’t seek justice, or that the police in Minneapolis shouldn’t express embarrassment, abject humility, and more rigorous internal enforcement, but patience and restraint should be the order of the day for all.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us seek change…slowly…and permanently…and may the God of peace reign in America once again; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 3-19-20 It’s Hard to Dispute the Facts

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-19-20

It’s Hard to Dispute the Facts

What’s Happening: “In a press conference yesterday, a reporter asked Trump why he kept referring to COVID-19 in racist terms, as the ‘China virus?’ He responded, because ‘it comes from China…’ It largely silenced the reporter, though accusations of racism and xenophobia remained. These accusations (and of sexism) are nothing new, but Trump’s appointments of people of color, women, and gays throughout the infrastructure of his administration have caused them to diminish. Besides, the statements of Democrat Representatives Ilhan Omar, AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes), etc. have given the opposition much to defend, too (https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-defends-chinese-virus-comments-175301464.html). ‘It’s not racist at all. It comes from China, that’s why,’ Trump said. ‘It comes from China. I want to be accurate.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “He might have less accusation if he used less incendiary terms!”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe. But we both know that’s not going to happen. The President is a ‘scab-picker,’ but it’s hard to dispute the facts…at least in this case. Whether the Chinese covered up the real facts about COVID-19…well, let’s just say they aren’t famous for their transparency. Their subsequent accusation of the U.S, military is classic communist disinformation…and patently untrue…but no surprise. Time is a multiplier, and their tardy honesty probably has cost lives…mostly in China.”

“It does seem a shame to accuse people of anything (like ethnicity) over which they have no control. Besides, God has all those things under His control (Acts 17:26).

‘… and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,’ (NASU)

“Accusers ought to make hay while the sun shines, though. With the advance of technology, transportation, communication, and the rise of multi-ethnic marriage…well, we’re soon all going to look alike, anyway.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in racial and gender equality. We all fall equally short of God’s requirements (Is. 53::6, Rom. 3:23). Which is the bad news (Rom. 6:23). Of course, if you read all of the previous verse, there is some Good News, too.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to regard all (including ourselves) as sinners, rather than looking down our pious noses at them; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
