Dissent OK, Harassment Not

What’s Happening:  “The rest of the story…not only was Sarah Huckabee-Sanders ejected from the Red Hen restaurant (which you could argue was the owner trying to keep her employees and other patrons sheltered from controversy), but the owner of the Red Hen organized a protest at the restaurant across the street that was then attended (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/new-development-in-red-hen-story-huckabee-says-owner-tailed-sarahs-family-after-she-left/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=CTBreaking&utm_campaign=breaking&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘By the way, Laura’ former Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee, said in a radio interview with Laura Ingraham, ‘There’s a part of the story that hasn’t been told; you’re going to be the first to hear it. Once Sarah and her family left, of course she was asked to vacate. Sarah just went home. They had sort of had enough….’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “‘Kind of ironic’ is an understatement, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “Right…but not surprising. Intolerance may mask itself as tolerant, but the truth usually comes out in the end. Are we, as Americans, called to tolerance? Yes. But the restaurant owner has the right of free speech, too. Sometimes, that may mean ejection from a restaurant. Sometimes it may even lead to a peaceful protest…but in no case should it rise to the level of harassment. I cannot be the judge. I was not there. But I dare say it was judged.”

“Christians? We are called to be tolerant, but to stand for our principles, too (Rom. 12:18; Heb. 12:14) Where do we draw the line? Let the Holy Spirit guide you.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, make us discerning purveyors of Your truth; while we want to stand up when we should, we don’t want to lay down when we shouldn’t: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-25-18 Don’t Be Surprised

Don’t Be Surprised

What’s Happening:  “The Red Hen, the small restaurant in Lexington, Virginia who booted out Sarah Huckabee-Sanders over the administration’s political stands, say they would do it again…ostensibly for 15 more minutes of fame…which, as this article states, they might need. They join the ranks of Peter Fonda, Tom Arnold, Alec Baldwin, et al, et nauseum (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/restaurant-owner-who-booted-sarah-sanders-basks-in-publicity-issues-statement/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=conservative-brief-CT&utm_campaign=dailyam&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘This feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals,’ Wilkinson said.’ Then she, no doubt, agrees with a certain baker of wedding cakes, right?”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “That probably never entered her calculation.”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not….still, I won’t begrudge her the right to make her ‘free-speech’ stand…if that’s what she was doing…I don’t presume to know her mind. Sarah and those of her political persuasion should not be shocked, however. There seems to be a polarization of the country. And probably not over important issues…though some are. Unfortunately, we have a public that just likes to pick a scab. They don’t really care what the issue is, they just enjoy the fight.”

“Christians? Two things. 1) Don’t pick a fight just to be fighting. Rather ,seek peace, if possible (Rom. 12:18; Heb. 12:14). But not peace at any price. 2) ‘Don’t be surprised, friends, when the world hates you. This has been going on a long time.’ (1 John 3:13) Persecution is our lot in life. Sure, we should enact laws against it…then there’s the First Amendment, too… but if we think it’s going to end, surely we kid ourselves!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be patient with those who express their angst in ways we wish they wouldn’t; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
