A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-27-18
Building a Legacy
What’s Happening: “John McCain, 81, died Saturday after succumbing to brain cancer, having fought that disease for over a year, and will lie in State at the rotunda of the Capitol, one of only 31 that have been accorded that honor in 166 years (all the way back to President Lincoln). He was a graduate of the Naval Academy, was shot down over Vietnam where he was captured and spent over 5 years imprisoned there, served terms in the House and Senate and even ran for President, though unsuccessfully. He will be sorely missed (https://www.wkyc.com/article/news/nation-now/john-mccain-to-lie-in-state-at-us-capitol-an-honor-bestowed-on-only-30-other-people/465-16c6929c-756b-420c-a4f9-0898b97106b1). Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell said McCain was ‘a great American patriot, a statesman who put his country first and enriched this institution through many years of service.’”
Knee-Jerk Response: “Wasn’t he one of Trump’s thorns in the side?
Biblical Response: “He did vote against repealing Obamacare at the last minute…as a Republican that was almost unforgivable. Still, he was his own man, and that, for a politician is saying something….in fact, that might be what separates many politicians from statesmen. Most truly great men (or women) don’t consciously build a legacy…they just let the chips fall where they may and end up judged ‘great’ by history (Alexander the Great, Peter the Great, etc., come to mind). In other words, you don’t build a lasting legacy by building a legacy.”
Christians? The Scriptures admonish us: ‘For they loved the praise of men rather than God’ (John 12:43). Or as I like to say. ‘I’d pat you on the back, but your hand is in the way.’ Anytime we have to be concerned about what our actions may be saying to a future generation…we probably shouldn’t.”
Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray: “Heavenly Father, help us build a legacy by surprise…and may it be worthy of emulation; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
