Legal Maneuvering

What’s Happening:  “In a surprise announcement yesterday, the administration said former Mayor of New York and United States attorney, Rudy Giuliani, will be joining Sekulow and Cobb on the President’s legal team. Administration officials hope he will bring Bob Mueller’s distracting investigation to a close (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/developing-giuliani-takes-new-unexpected-place-on-trump-team/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribunehttps://www.westernjournal.com/ct/developing-giuliani-takes-new-unexpected-place-on-trump-team/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribune). One of the President’s lawyers, Jay Sekulow,  made the announcement,”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Finally…now maybe these knuckleheads can get something done!.”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not…and I identify with the frustration. BTW, you (and the rest of the electorate) put these “knuckleheads” in office. To say the Russian probe has been a distraction for this administration might be an understatement. Still Congress has been reluctant to do anything more that posture partisanly. Meanwhile, the very agenda that most of America elected Trump to do languishes.”

“Christians? We can’t lay all the blame elsewhere. Unless we pray, the swamp doesn’t get drained…or it drains only to reveal a secular humanism which is a worse fate (Hosea 8:7).”

CLARITY – 3-27-18 Coordination Takes Time

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-27-18

Coordination Takes Time

What’s Happening:  “The U.S. and its allies have expelled over 100 diplomats in what is undoubtedly the largest coordinated expulsion in history. A week or so ago, when the Trump Administration did not immediately respond to the expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats in the U.K. over the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, the western press excoriated  it. Blaming the delayed response on the time it takes to coordinate, the U.S. has largely silenced the press. In addition to the diplomatic expulsion the U.S. is shutting down the Russian Consulate in Seattle, citing its nearness to a sub base and the offices of a Boeing plant (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/mar/26/four-eu-states-set-to-expel-russian-diplomats-over-skripal-attack). ‘I have found great solidarity in our friends and partners in the E.U. North America, NATO, and beyond…’ said Prime Minister of Britain, Theresa May. ”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “How long does it take to make a phone call?”

Biblical Response:  “If it were only that simple…there are specific diplomats that have to be named for expulsion and dozens of countries involved each with similar decisions to make. No doubt the western press would have criticized Trump’s impetuousness had he responded sooner. Besides, delay made a great statement of agreement, consensus, and measured deliberation. This only made the Russians look more culpable.”

“Christians? We find ourselves often complaining about the Lord being ’asleep at the switch’…mistaking His delay for inaction…later to learn He had a plan all along (2 Pet. 3:9-10). We must realize there is a difference between a temporal creature and an eternal God (Is. 55:8-9).”

CLARITY – 3-19-18 Tit for Tat

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-19-18

Tit for Tat

What’s Happening:  “The expulsion of 23 diplomats (read: unregistered intelligence officers) from the U.K. (for the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal, his daughter Yulia, and Det. Sgt. Nick  Bailey – all still in the hospital) resulted in the expulsion of 23 British diplomats from Moscow by the Kremlin…and the closing of the British Council (dedicated to cultural relations between the two countries). (http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-43440992). It is believed that someone may unknowingly witnessed the poisoning event. Details of Skripal’s movements are being solicited. Neil Basu, Metro Police Assistant Commissioner, appealed, ‘We are learning more about Sergei and Yulia’s movements, but we need to be clearer around their exact movements on the morning of the incident.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “(yawn) This concerns me how?”

Biblical Response:  “I know that this may seem mundane…especially to the average American. I mean, the UK expels a few, Russia expels a few in retaliation…big deal…so what?” Right? Well, first it IS  a big deal if you are one of those diplomats or their families. And the British Council is trying to prepare young people for a post-Putin Russia. Still, it’s a small deal until you consider that these might be the precursors to war. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail. Is anybody else seeing an alignment of Russia, North Korea and Iran forming?”

“Christians?  Nobody in their right mind looks forward to war. However, we’d be foolish to think we were not in a struggle. We have to remind ourselves that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against the ideologies that challenge the Lordship of Christ (see Eph. 6:12). How do you win that struggle? Long Term; missionaries. Short Term: prayer…and we may have to prepare to defend ourselves. ”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to show meekness (extending the olive branch of peace with one hand, while holding the club of war back in the other); in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 3-15-18 Expelled

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-15-18

Expelled

What’s Happening:  “If you’re a student and get expelled…well, it’s one thing…but if you’re a diplomat and get called an ‘undeclared intelligence officer’ living in a host country at their behest and you get expelled…well that’s quite another thing. It’s an affront to a denying Kremlin and a test of loyalty to everyone else. Was Russia really involved in using a nerve agent in Salisbury? Something put spy-swapped Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in critical condition (http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-43402506). British PM Theresa May said the use of a Russian-made nerve agent on UK soil amounted to an ‘unlawful use of force.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wasn’t a detective investigating the attack also harmed?”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey is in serious, but stable condition,  presumably from the same nerve agent that was used on the father-daughter pair…at least he was investigating the incident when he fell ill. I don’t want to call them guilty just based on accusation, but it it waddles and quacks like a duck… How will the U.S. respond? How should it respond? Even though the incident occurred on British soil (and their response should and will be more condemning), still our response (especially when concrete evidence becomes available…and it will…if it’s true) should be strong and supportive of our ally, the U.K. U.S, Ambassador to the U.N., Nikki Haley, was.”

“Christians?  A) We are no strangers to expulsion. When you say or do anything unpopular you can expect that kind of treatment Acts 4:1-21). B) However, there is no excuse for taking the law into your own hands. You night not like what someone says or does, but it’s no cause for vengeance, the exclusive territory of God (Rom. 12:19; Heb. 10:30). By the way, for all you ‘snowflakes’ out there who think we now serve only a universally forgiving God, both those scriptures were in the ‘merciful’ New Testament.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to demonstrate wisdom, patience, and discretion…and, of course, we do pray for Sergei, Yulia and Nick; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 2-27-18 Ceasing or Increasing?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-27-18

Ceasing or Increasing?

What’s Happening:  “Although the U.N. Security Council has unanimously declared a ceasefire in Syria, government troops continue to fight (shell, bomb, and even use chemicals) because it says that al-Qaida was included in the agreement. So far, 12 have been killed since the ceasefire was proclaimed, mostly in Eastern Ghouta, though Putin has set a corridor for escape from 9:00am till 3:00pm, beginning today (https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/26/588813002/despite-u-n-call-for-cease-fire-strikes-continue-on-damascus-suburb). ‘In this suburb there are said to be a small number of rebels who are aligned with al-Qaida. The government and its allies are basically using that as an argument to say … the cease-fire doesn’t apply here,’ says Ruth Sherlock of NPR.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “i thought whatever the Security Council voted unanimously on was law.”

Biblical Response:  “That’s what you get for thinking. Seriously, they have no standing army to enforce their ‘edicts’ so, they’re only ‘desires.’ It’s mostly political posturing, not anything those on the frontline pay any attention to…unfortunately, those recently killed would say..if they could…which they can’t.”

“Christians? It would be great if we could have peace by just proclaiming it. It doesn’t work that way in the Kingdom of God…or on earth. As I’ve said before, there won’t be peace on earth until the Prince of Peace rules in the heart of every man. (Lk. 2:14)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we don’t need unrealistic expectations, but patience; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
