CLARITY – 4-27-20 Consider the Source

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-27-20

Consider the Source

What’s Happening: “This is the second time strict Saudi laws have been relaxed recently. First, it was that flogging, the practice of receiving as much as 50 lashes while handcuffed, sometimes for non-violent crimes, was abolished. Secondly, that minors were exempt from execution. Sharia Law, the law in many majority-Islamic nations, sources much of its edicts in the Koran, or as they would spell it, the Quran. King Salman has brought many controversial reforms to Saudi Arabia and activists generally applaud his attempts at bringing his country into the 21st century (https://news.yahoo.com/saudi-arabia-ends-death-penalty-151128365.html). Quoting AP’s Sunday article: The president of the Saudi government’s Human Rights Commission, Awwad Alawwad, confirmed the latest decision in a statement Sunday, saying it helps the kingdom establish ‘a more modern penal code and demonstrates the kingdom’s commitment to following through on key reforms.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’m glad they’re becoming more modern…and glad that I don’t live under Sharia Law!”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps you live in one of the seven states that have banned Sharia law (as of July, 2019: Alabama, Arizona, Kansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Dakota and Tennessee.). At least you don’t live in Michigan (which goes further than any other state in the Sharia direction https://www.sapiens.org/culture/sharia-united-states/). Then there’s Minnesota’s Fifth District Representative, Ilhan Omar. an avowed Muslim, who might be more comfortable under Sharia.  All these facts might fly in the face of your exclamation.”

“As to welcoming their reforms, if they last…and are expanded…I might welcome them, too. The key t6 the legitimacy of any law is its source. God, who made man (Gen. 1:26), as the Creator, should have the final say in how man should interact with man. Since Sharia gets its law from the Koran  (from what Allah is purported to have said) it must be illegitimate; at least for a Christian nation (this might be up for argument, but not if you were one of the Founders – or the Supreme Court in 1892  in Holy Trinity v. United States). And if you think Allah is just another name for Jehovah, you haven’t read the Koran.“

“Christians? We believe that all legitimate law must come from His Word, as dictated by the Holy Spirit (2 Tim. 3:16). Much of it comes from the Ten Commandments (Ex. 20). By the way, those are commandments, not suggestions. In determining a law’s legitimacy, you have to consider the Source.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to welcome change that moves us legitimately in the right direction; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-23-19 Slow But Sure

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-23-19

Slow But Sure

What’s Happening: “Today courts in Saudi Arabia sentenced five to death in Kamal Khashoggi’s murder (3 others got a total of 21 years; 11 were tried). Remember that news event and the brouhaha surrounding it? Some thought Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was behind it (most of the Democrats in Washington, the U.N. special commission appointed to look into the matter, Turkish authorities, etc.); some thought he learned of it afterwards (Trump, many of the Republicans in Congress, etc.). I guess the truth may never be known this side of eternity (https://www.yahoo.com/news/saudi-sentences-5-death-jamal-095437622.html), ‘The prosecutor sentenced five hit men to death but did not touch those who were behind the five,” Yasin Aktay, the leader of the ruling party in Turkey (he was also a friend of Khashoggi), told The Associated Press.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “When will justice ever be served?”

Biblical Response:  “I guess it depends on to whom you talk. Obviously, some think it already has, while others think it probably won’t ever occur. Both may be wrong. One thing is for sure, truth and ultimate justice may be slow, but it surely will come…God will see to that. Besides, justice here and now (temporal justice) only affects the here and now (Heb. 9:27)…eternal justice is…well…for much, much longer, And, in the scope of eternity, is quite swift.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in ultimate eternal justice. And that we are all subject to it (Lk. 13:1-3). However, the good news may be bad news for some. Sure, we are all resurrected (Acts 24:15), but to what? Eternal life or eternal death? As the saying goes: ‘Justice makes hell necessary, mercy makes heaven possible.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to not paint with too broad a brush when we are not privy to all the facts…and to rely on You because You are; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-16-19 Supply Threatened?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-16-19

Supply Threatened?

What’s Happening: “The primary oil field in Saudi Arabia was attacked by drones over the weekend, with Aramco, the Saudi government-owned company, losing half of its output. It may be several weeks before full production is restored. Houthi rebels in Yemen have taken credit for the attack, but intelligence sources say Tehran is almost certainly behind everything. The U.S. and Saudi Arabia have already announced they are prepared to access strategic reserves (https://www.yahoo.com/news/saudi-races-restore-oil-supply-strike-blamed-iran-094616295.html). Trump tweeted, ‘Saudi Arabia oil supply was attacked. There is reason to believe that we know the culprit, are locked and loaded depending on verification, but are waiting to hear from the Kingdom as to who they believe was the cause of this attack, and under what terms we would proceed!’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Oh no! The price of gas will go sky high!”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, Chicken Little, they probably will…at least 15 cents; maybe even more later. Though it’s probably more because of the oil companies’ seeing this as an excuse to gouge than any real threat to world oil supplies (announced willingness to tap strategic reserves will do little to assuage this fear), we did lessen significantly production of the world’s biggest supplier. Of course, when the supply of anything gets threatened, it’s time to remind yourself that He is ultimately the supply (Phil. 4:19), and His hand is not shortened (Is. 59:1). Or, as a familiar scripture puts it:

‘I have been young and now I am old, Yet I have not seen the righteous  forsaken or his descendants begging bread.’ (Ps. 37:25 NASU)

“Christians? Oh, we believe in limitless supply…of oil and other needs. There is even evidence that not all oil may be from fossils! Just google ‘non-fossil oil’ and see what you get! We serve a God Who is unlimited and owns everything! (Is. 66:2) Not only does He own the cattle on a thousand hills (Ps. 50:10), He owns the hills, too!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we need Your help in properly managing ‘our’ resources, help us to realize they are Yours first; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 11-22-18 Caught Between

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 11-22-18

Caught Between

What’s Happening: “I thought about telling you how Providential it was for the Pilgrims to land in the territory of the only English-speaking native American in North America (Squanto), but decided to opine on Trump’s Saudi Arabian dilemma. I mean, on the one hand Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) has made a $110 Billion dollar arms purchase (and there’s the jobs to consider) and the fact that the Saudis are a big deterrent to Iranian hegemony…on the other hand, the C. I. A. thinks MbS may have ordered journalist Khashoggi death and dismemberment (to say nothing about the poor humanitarian statement it makes for us not to condemn MbS’s actions wholesale). I’m glad I don’t have the President’s job (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/18/us/politics/trump-khashoggi-saudis.html).  ‘Everything points to the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, MbS, ordering @washingtonpost journalist Jamal #Khashoggi’s killing.’ tweeted Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “If Khashoggi’s murder was ordered by MbS, it ought to be condemned in no uncertain terms!”

Biblical Response:  “In a perfect world, it would be (of course, in a perfect world, it would have never happened); it’s complicated. The worker, who loses his job when those arms deals get cancelled, didn’t do anything wrong…of course, the civilian collateral damage in the Yemeni clash (which is Saudi’s proxy war against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels) is also unfortunate…I said it was complicated. Trying to make black-and-white decisions in a gray world is not my idea of a good time. Maybe that is why Trump has vacated to Mar-A-Lago for the Thanksgiving holidays.”

“Christians? We believe in calling a spade ‘a spade.’ but timing is everything. There are many mitigating factors (including other political hazards):

  • The presumption of innocence
  • Israel’s struggle against Iran
  • Our desire that Russia or China not get arms orders

Still, we cannot let murder go. Hopefully, it’ll put a President on his knees.

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help our President to know the right thing to do…at the right time; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-25-18 A Rock and a Hard Spot

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-25-18

A Rock and a Hard Spot

What’s Happening: “The recent (last Tuesday – 2 days ago) discovery of Jamal Khashoggi’s body in the Consul General’s garden and the initial denial of knowledge by Crown Prince Salman, then that a ‘choke hold’ during an interrogation gone bad was responsible and then the announcement of the arrest of 18 Saudis involved in the event, has put Trump in an awkward position. His deal (http://time.com/4787797/donald-trump-yemen-saudi-arabia-arms-deal/)   with the Saudis means a lot of jobs for Americans, yet Turkey is trying to vie with Saudi Arabia and Iran for hegemony in the region….and is using the Khashoggi incident as leverage. It’s complicated.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Erdogan, Salman, Rouhani, Trump…the players in a huge Monopoly game!”

Biblical Response:  “Actually, not an inaccurate depiction, but it’s even more complicated than that. It involves sovereignty, conspiracy, power, and, of course, money. They’re not just competing for control of the region, but also its resources. Remember, most of the area powers are not democracies. America might just be trying to bring some sanity to the table. One thing is for sure, the light of truth will change everything…which may be why Khashoggi’s murder cover-up is being so hotly pursued…and leveraged.”

“Christians? The light of truth is revealing…sometimes it exposes what we thought was hidden…sometimes we’re ‘shocked’ when we learn what we’ve really known all along…always it is the last word. What really happened to Khashoggi? Who’s really responsible? We may never know all the truth…at least on this side of eternity. Justice makes hell necessary, mercy makes heaven possible (Heb. 9:27).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, I am glad Your light of truth will ultimately prevail; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-9-18 Standing Alone

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-9-18

Standing Alone

What’s Happening:  “It isn’t easy to stand alone, especially when the tide of almost global opinion is against you – but that is exactly what President Trump did by fulfilling his campaign promise to extract the U.S. from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or Iran Deal. Although the leaders of France, Germany and the U.K. tried to persuade him to do otherwise, Iran’s Supreme Leader Hassan Rouhani threatened, and the Democrats postured, Trump pulled the U.S. out of the deal (https://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=WA18E16&f=WU18E06). It remains to be seen whether this will help or hurt in the upcoming negotiations with North Korea.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I thought Trump was a populist…how come he’s doing something so unpopular?”

Biblical Response:  “I guess it depends on whom you talk to. Saudi Arabia, our ally Israel, and those who elected him like the move. Granted, it isn’t easy standing up for principle, but how can you trust anyone you can’t inspect. We were promised unfettered access…we haven’t received it. Sure, we never found them violating the terms of the agreement WHERE THEY ALLOWED US TO INSPECT…no surprise there. People don’t do what you expect, they only do what you inspect ”

“Christians? Standing Alone is really a misnomer. As the people of God, we never stand alone (Matt. 18:20). The challenge, however, is to never take a stand He cannot support…like the Iran deal.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us when we take a stand; let it be for something significant AND something You can support; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
