If True, Disgusting

It’s Happening: “An Assistant Scoutmaster, Jonathan Spohrer, 26, was arraigned Friday on charges he was sexually abusing a 12-year old boy at several BSA retreats and meetings. He has pled not-guilty, but his duties and interaction with Scouts has been suspended. He was arrested at his home after a lengthy investigation and will stand trial in New York. An AP report, published Saturday said: ‘Chris Coscia, CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Council of the Boy Scouts, said the organization is ‘shocked and disgusted’ at the alleged behavior’ (https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/assistant-scoutmaster-charged-sexually-abusing-boy-12-66711854). ‘Upon learning of these reports, we removed this individual and prohibited him from any future participation in our programs,’ Coscia said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “That’s why my kids are not in Scouts.”

Biblical Response:  “That might be reasonable and true…of course, it might also be a convenient excuse for parental non-involvement that rather favors any one of a number of self-indulging activities…like gaming, pornography, addiction to entertainment, etc. Listen, as a former Scoutmaster (for eight years), an Eagle Scout, and disappointed in their recent national decisions (like including girls and homosexuals), I have mixed emotions about Scouting. Fortunately, there are many faith-based alternatives (Royal Rangers, AWANA Clubs. etc.). Whatever any parent decides, boys need to be familiarized with proven outdoor survival skills (it improves his self-esteem), matters of personal integrity, leadership training, etc. We will be handing him a future that desperately needs these attributes.

“Christians? Sure, Jonathan needs to be prayed for…for repentance and probably deliverance (Matt. 17:21), but there is no place in the kingdom of God for sexual aberration (Rom. 1:24-32). We all need to be reminded from time to time that our youth are the leaders of tomorrow and need to be treated as the sacred truth that they are.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be the worthy repositories of Your grace…and responsibility; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Accountability Too Late

What’s Happening: “In a last-ditch attempt at accountability, the Catholic diocese in South Carolina released a list of 42 priests (all but 11 have already died) Friday that have been credibly accused of sexually abusing children. Other lists have been previously released from dioceses in Pennsylvania, Texas, and Mississippi. The Catholic Church has released over 1,000 priests and others as part of a ‘house cleaning’ … but that number is in the U.S. alone. This latest list was only released as part of a class-action suit settlement reached in Charleston (https://www.yahoo.com/news/catholic-church-sc-names-priests-accused-sex-abuse-230433260.html).  ‘It is my fervent hope and prayer that publishing this list will help bring healing to the victims and their families who have been so grievously harmed by the betrayal of priests and church leadership,’ Bishop Robert Guglielmone wrote.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wow! Over a thousand! What a tragedy!”

Biblical Response:  “Not to minimize the damage done to generations of the congregants, but what’s worse is it appears this was only done because it was forced. Aside from the natural tendency of the victims for silence, those that did know (or at least suspected) remained quiet, too. What happened to ‘when you see a brother overtaken in a fault’ (Gal. 6:1)? The church does not have to air its dirty laundry if it handles these things inside…EARLY.! It may also alleviate collateral damage.”

Christians? We believe in self-discipline and confession (hopefully the self-discipline eliminates the need for confession…or at least keeps the sin to impure thought, not allowing evil to mature to action)..”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, forgive the church for not dealing with the problem till it was forced…for installing the wrong men in the first place (1 Tim. 5:22); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-16-19 At Long Last

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-16-19

At Long Last

What’s Happening: “American Cardinal Theodore McCarrick was defrocked by Pope Francis over accusations he sexually abused a teenager 50 years ago the Vatican announced today, thus levying the harshest spiritual discipline that could be given by the church – he is to be considered as a lay person and cannot preside over mass. The ex-Cardinal, 88, resigned last July. The Catholic church has been ‘cleaning house’ recently, especially in America and Chile (https://www.yahoo.com/news/vatican-defrocks-former-us-cardinal-sex-abuse-minor-094117909.html). The above link is for an article that quotes, ‘McCarrick was ordained a priest in 1958 and rose through the ranks in the Archdiocese of New York before being installed as archbishop of Washington in 2001, a post he held until 2006.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Surely this is the end of this historical fiasco and embarrassment for the church!”

Biblical Response:  “Surely not, unfortunately. As long as sinful man is at the head of any institution, he’ll find a way to abuse its power. It is very sad that Priests, Bishops and Cardinals have abused their power…and, in some cases, sexually abused minors who trusted them. Thankfully, these allegation were thoroughly and independently investigated and the Catholic church has at least tried to mete out some justice. Of course, there may be some unknown or still guarded secret liaisons that are yet to be revealed. But, as the Scripture promises, ‘your transgressions are discovered’ (Ezek. 21:24).

“Christians? There is nothing hidden from God (Mk. 4:22). The proverbial closet is a myth. He has been in the closet all along. For Christians (really, for everyone) there is no such thing as ‘a private life.’ This is cause for much repentance…and it should be. Those things that are reprehensible and have earthly collateral damage, we may be held accountable for by the courts…criminally and civilly, as the case is. God’s judgment is a little more complete, however. As I’ve said before, justice make hell necessary, but, thankfully, mercy makes heaven possible.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to take seriously our charge to be ‘salt and light’ (Matt. 5:13-14); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
