Talk About Defamation!

What’s Happening:  “When Jarrod Ramos, 38, killed five and wounded two at the Capital Gazette, a news outlet he had sued in 2012 for defamation, he was obviously not thinking about how his reputation might suffer by taking matters into his own hands (https://www.yahoo.com/news/capital-gazette-shooting-suspect-sued-023352130.html). ‘A lawyer would almost certainly have told him not to proceed with this case,’ the court wrote in its opinion following the appeal. ‘It reveals a fundamental failure to understand what defamation law is and, more particularly, what defamation law is not,’ quotes Nick Vasser in his HuffPost article.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Isn’t defamation about reputation, anyway? Instead of folks wondering about Ramos’ character, this way he removed all doubt!”

Biblical Response:  “Anybody who loses…twice…and represents himself…is not sane anyway (which is underscored by his vengeful heinous act). I guess the left won’t be crying for more gun control on this one (he used a shotgun…not a handgun or any illegally purchased long gun). What can keep anyone safe from such murderous intents? Probably nothing…realistically.  Nothing short of massive world-wide revival will make everyone realize that vengeance is the Lord’s. (Rom. 12:19).”

“Christians? We believe that family is the answer for most feelings of being wronged…a good father and mother will teach their son that time and truth (and patience) sort out most of life’s inequities… Of course, he could have gotten the same input in Sunday school. Maybe one of the prison ministries will reach him. One can always pray. Even murder is forgivable…by Someone who was made on ‘no reputation’ (Phil. 2:7-8).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us reach out to those who feel they have been wronged, teaching them to depend on Your final justice; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 3-6-18 The Difference of 15 Minutes

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-6-18

The Difference of 15 Minutes

What’s Happening:  “The Florida State Senate voted to ban the sales of AR-15’s, the most popular sporting gun in America…and then voted 15 minutes later to reverse themselves. To be fair, the first vote was a voice vote and ruled ‘passed’….and the second one was a roll-call vote which reversed the amendment 21-17, two Republicans joining the Democrats to make the 17 (https://conservativetribune.com/senate-bans-ar-15s-15-minutes/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=patriotupdate&utm_campaign=weeklypm&utm_content=libertyalliance). The measure now goes to the House, hopefully by Monday (yesterday), to be considered. It must pass and be signed by the Governor before they adjourn Friday to become Florida law.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Great! More deaths by AR-15’s!”

Biblical Response:  “Not necessarily; in fact, while sales have recently skyrocketed, deaths by AR-15’s have gone down. Since we are not willing to ban blunt objects, baseball bats, and fists (all of which have caused more death than the AR-15), we may see more deaths. Actually, we might get more desired results by just enforcing the laws already on the books (of course, law enforcement might actually have to respond with real action – hear that Sheriff’s Department and FBI?). Parents and students might feel safer by passing new laws (and I’m not saying our mental health system doesn’t need an overhaul), but for there to be an end to shootings you’d have to ban evil – wait a minute, that’s what all existing laws do..”

“Christians? We like that verse in Proverbs 29:27, ‘The good hate the wickedness of the wicked, and the wicked the goodness of the good.’ Of course, maybe if we didn’t hate the wicked, just their wickedness, a few more things would change.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to ‘throw out the baby with the bathwater;’ while we should despise the evil  that infects people, we need to love the people it infects; thank God You did; in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 2-23-18 Too Little, Too Late

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-23-18

Too Little, Too Late

What’s Happening:  “Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel was devastated when he learned that Deputy Scot Peterson did not enter the school when the shooting began, but rather took up a defensive position. He has been suspended without pay. Other positions may be in jeopardy pending investigation of 23 separate reported calls about the shooter or his brother since 2008 (https://www.yahoo.com/gma/fla-school-officer-waited-outside-building-4-minutes-232627967–abc-news-topstories.html).  ‘He should have went in [bad grammar: “should have gone”], addressed the killer, killed the killer,’ Israel was quoted.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I thought they were supposed to run toward the sound of gunfire…”

Biblical Response:  “Apparently, so did his boss…and I’m sure you’ll get no argument from the parents. I don’t know who’s more to blame: Officer Peterson, the recipients of 23 calls since 2008, a derelict FBI Agent who received advanced notice but did nothing, or a tolerant public who witnessed a lot of evil postings on social media but said nothing. As far as preventing future shootings: Banning so-called bump stocks, more aggressive background checks, a reform of our mental health system (including a prohibition of gun possession by the mentally disturbed), and the arming and stationing of trained professionals (even teachers – about 20%), all of which students, parents and President Trump have suggested.”

“Christians? We believe in self control (eliminating the need for gun control), a fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22) Of course, there must be laws for those not having the Lawmaker living inside (Gal 5:24-26). There is no excuse for someone trained to confront the evil. Not doing so is costly to those not so trained. We cannot let fear reign…that’s what the training is for.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give us wisdom, common sense, and courage. These are vital to triumph over this or any evil; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY -2-15-18 Tragic Tolerance

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-15-18

Tragic Tolerance

What’s Happening:  “Nobody said anything; nobody was very surprised…when the Florida shooter (17 killed, 15 wounded), 19-year-old ex-student-of-the-school Nikolas Cruz was captured, the details began to emerge: he wore a gas mask, shot with a legally-obtained AR-15, and his social media accounts were full of blatant references to gun threats and even bomb sites visited (https://www.yahoo.com/news/injuries-reported-shooting-florida-high-201227723.html). Broward County, Sheriff Israel asked the local community to report any suspicious activity, especially online so to avoid ‘a major tragedy like this devastation that happened in Parkland tonight.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Surely, you’re not blaming the attack on our culture!’”

Biblical Response:  “Uh, yeah! I mean, Nikolas Cruz is majorly to blame for his premeditated murderous acts…but everyone who could have reported his obvious violent speech and social-media craziness must also share in the blame. Have we created such an air of tolerance that we just ignore the warning signs of aberrant behavior? He sought mental health help a year earlier…he was expelled from the same school for bad behavior…nobody was surprised by his acts…but nobody said anything, either. Sure, there will be renewed calls for gun control, more security at schools, and mental health laws…but nothing will help in a culture that allows everything in the name of tolerance.”

“Christians? Sure, this is the time to weep (Rom. 12:15)…and the time for prayer (Phil. 4:6)…but it may be the time to act, too…and be prepared (Amos 4:12)…or be repaired!

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we lift up those who have lost someone in the recent shooting or who may be wounded; also, give us common sense, not reactionary anger; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
