What Did They Think Was Going to Happen?

What’s Happening: “Another protester was shot by police in Hong Kong over the weekend. The victim could be seen on a Facebook post attacking an officer as he was collaring another protester. The protesters, who have been at it for five months protesting a proposed bill that would allow extradition to mainland China, were particularly agitated over the death of a protester who fell some time ago, but finally succumbed to his injuries Friday (https://www.yahoo.com/news/hong-kong-protester-appears-shot-020411886.html).  ‘I do not want to go into details, but I just want to make it very clear that we will spare no effort in finding ways and means that could end the violence in Hong Kong as soon as possible,’ leader of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam told reporters.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Any protests are useless and just a waste of time and lives.”

Biblical Response:  “You may be right…time alone will tell. However, I do remember a protest that began nearly 250 years ago against the greatest power of the day. That, too, ended in bloodshed and a ‘shot that was heard around the world’…and a new country that has become the envy of the world (I mean, I don’t see droves of people risking their lives to get into any other countries). What will be the outcome here? I don’t know. It’s a cinch more blood will be shed before it’s over. You give folks a taste of freedom and they usually want more. All that’s missing is a religious element (or the MSM is not reporting about it). One thing is for sure: ‘Freedom isn’t free…you’ve got to pay the price, you’ve got to sacrifice…for your liberty’ (a line from a song sung by ‘Up With People’). ”

“Christians? Do we believe in freedom? Absolutely…but we know it only comes with bloodshed (Rom. 5:9). Of course, I’m talking about spiritual freedom…but freedom in this world is akin to it (John 8:33-36).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help those who seek freedom to realize there is none without sacrifice; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-3-19 Brother Does the Unexpected

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-3-19

Brother Does the Unexpected

What’s Happening: “I guess everyone has heard of the Dallas area police officer who mistakenly shot and killed a guy – he (Botham Jean) was entering his own apartment and the officer (Amber Guyger) had mistakenly (the apartment was exactly one floor below hers) shot Botham, thinking he was an intruder – but have you heard about Brandt Jean, Botham’s brother, who yesterday forgave Guyger from the witness stand and later hugged her? (https://www.yahoo.com/news/jury-deciding-sentence-former-police-officer-amber-guyger-202841301–abc-news-topstories.html). ‘I love you just like anyone else and I’m not going to hope you rot and die,” Brandt Jean testified at the sentencing portion after Guyger had gotten 10 years. ‘I personally want the best for you. I wasn’t going to say this in front of my family, I don’t even want you to go to jail. I want the best for you because I know that’s exactly what Botham would want for you. Give your life to Christ. I think giving your life to Christ is the best thing Botham would want for you.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wow! Now that took guts!”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah…maybe even more than that. What is the quote? ‘To err is human, to forgive, divine’? (Alexander Pope, ‘An Essay on Criticism’) I’m reminded of Christ Himself, forgiving His executioners and the crowds who stood by and mocked (Luke 23:34). You might expect that from the Son of God, but from one of His followers?! I guess his faith is real! And our faith should be real. And, if real, it should produce a difference in us. Sometimes that difference is shocking and unexpected.”

“Christians? We believe that our love for our fellow man might help us change our defaults. Our love, after all, is the result of a nature change…that’s why our defaults have changed. Where Brandt might have acted like any other brother…full of hatred and revenge…yet he saw Amber as just another human in a mistake…a deadly one, for sure…but just a mistake.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us default to the nature change that having You as our Father produces in us; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 8-6-18 Siberia, Siloam or Switzerland

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-6-18

Siberia, Siloam or Switzerland

What’s Happening:  “Death is a fact of life…you’ll get no argument from the families of those aboard the Russian chopper that went down over the weekend in Siberia, killing all 18  (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-45068113) or from the families of the 20 that were killed in a plane crash in Switzerland last weekend, a 79-year-old aircraft (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/switzerland-plane-crash-latest-news-swiss-alps-passengers-dead-a8478571.html)  or from the 73 that were shot in Chicago (11 killed) (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-chicago-weekend-violence-20180806-story.html). Is there a point besides the randomness of these tragedies?”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It was too cold or the plane too old or folks just just got in the way of bullets.”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps…I’m sure those were contributing factors…of course, each event must be considered separately. To these we can add the countless people who died in car accidents or at a hospital after a last-hope procedure failed or whatever? Where was God in all this? Indeed, why do bad things happen to good people? Although I don’t pretend to understand God’s mysteries or purposes, I have learned a few things:

  1. We live in a fallen world (Gen. 3:17-19)
  2. Some things happen to us because we’ve brought them on ourselves (Gal. 6:7)
  3. Sometimes we are someone else’s collateral damage (1 Cor. 15:33)
  4. God is trying to say something to us (Job 33:14)

“Christians? Jesus’ teaching about the 18 that were killed when the Tower of Siloam fell comes to mind (Luke 13:4-5). Oh, that none of these calamities would befall us. Still, we have this promise from God: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Rom. 8:29 NASB)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we want to be sympathetic to the tragedies of others, we also need to realize You ALWAYS have an agenda; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
