CLARITY – 6-22-18 SNAP Responsibility Isn’t

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-22-18

SNAP Responsibility Isn’t

What’s Happening:  “The House of Representative just passed (narrowly – 213-211) an $867 Billion complicated farm bill that altered some of the current Food Stamp program’s (SNAP) provisions that causes those able to work more. The Senate, however, has their own version (–business.html). ‘Farm bills are massive, providing funding for diverse programs including food aid, crop subsidies, rural development, conservation and efforts to stem the opioid crisis in rural communities. The last bill came into effect in 2014, two years behind schedule, after extensive congressional negotiations and partisan fights over food stamps,’ the Yahoo News article reads.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Doesn’t the Bible say, ‘No work, no eat?’”

Biblical Response:  “Kind of…I mean, you can infer that from Prov. 21:25-26 and 1 Thess. 3:6, but compassion should rule the day (there some who simply cannot work). However, when you provide no incentive for folks to do the hard thing, they won’t. It would be great if human nature was always industrious, but we usually follow the path of least resistance…let’s face it…we’re basically lazy.”

“Christians? We have the same tendencies of every man. The difference is that we now have a new nature (2 Cor. 5:17)…and we have a Helper (John 14:16, 26); in ourselves, we are just not that responsible.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be compassionate and not to ‘“game” the system when we are often quite capable; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
