Secret Things

What’s Happening: “Remember the brouhaha over Trump’s unreleased tax returns? Whether it was leaked accidentally or not, it only showed he was wealthy and took every deduction that was legal…who wouldn’t? No revelation there. Joe Biden’s and Kamala Harris’s dodge on whether they are in favor of Supreme Court packing is, however, another matter. In addition to not releasing a list of potential Supreme Court nominees – which Trump keeps requesting – Biden Thursday said he would not reveal his attitude on Supreme Court packing until after the election (https://www.yahoo.com/news/biden-says-announce-position-court-202850704.html). Vice President Pence and Senator Harris conducted a debate Wednesday in which the subject was breached. Quoting from the National Review article that appeared yesterday: ‘The American people deserve a straight answer and if you haven’t figured it out yet, the straight answer is they are going to pack the Supreme Court if they somehow win this election,’ Pence said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Are we just supposed to have faith they’ll do the right thing?”

Biblical Response:  “Great question. I guess that’s what both of them are expecting. But for a representative government…and neither of them being God…that’s kind of a heavy lift. I mean, it’s one thing to know the end from the beginning (Is. 46:10) and to choose when, how much, and to whom secret things are revealed (Deut. 29:29) if you are God, and quite another if you are not. Calling for faith if you’ve parted the Red Sea and raised the dead may be a little more reasonable than asking for it when you’ve done nothing in the past so miraculous.”

“Christians? Believing by faith may be a necessary ingredient to saving faith (Acts 16:31), but there is nothing written anywhere that says we must vote for someone that won’t reveal how they’ll act if elected.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to trust You, and anyone who has demonstrated what they’ll do…and trust no one else; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

CLARITY – 8-21-20 Ultimate Justice

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-21-20

Ultimate Justice

What’s Happening: “In a Reuters article yesterday, the Justice Department asked Thursday that the death penalty be reinstated for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the Boston Bomber. He was convicted (his accomplice brother had already been killed in a shootout with the police) for building and leaving for detonation a ‘pressure-cooker bomb’ that killed three and wounded more than 260 at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. The death penalty had been suspended when an appellate court’s July 31 decision  ordered a new death penalty phase trial for Tsarnaev. Justice Department’s Andrew Lelling (U.S. Attorney) is hoping to reinstate the trial’s original sentence of death (https://www.yahoo.com/news/u-again-seek-death-penalty-233018064.html). Quoting the article: ‘His (Andrew Lelling) statement came after U.S. Attorney General William Barr told the Associated Press the department will ‘do whatever’s necessary’ and continue to pursue the death penalty, a position consistent with President Donald Trump’s views.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I thought the death penalty was ruled ‘cruel and unusual.”

Biblical Response:  “Nope. Ask the 1,516 people killed since it was reinstated by the Supreme Court in 1976. Oh, wait…you can’t…they are dead. You might think that way…of course, you might ask 8-year old Martin Richard ot 23-year old Chinese exchange student Lingzi Lu for their opinions…oh wait, they were killed in the bombing. Whether or not the death penalty is ‘cruel and unusual’ (prevented by the U.S. Constitution), or man’s justice, is really moot in the scheme of things….unless it caused repentance (which impending death is supposed to do). In any case, ultimate justice by a holy God awaits (Heb. 9:27),”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in justice: man’s (Rom. 13:3-4) and God’s (Rev. 20:11-15). You might escape the first, but you will never escape the second. Let’s all pray for mercy.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we pray that each of us, the perpetrators and the victims, might rely on the shed blood of the Savior, our only Hope (not Obewan Kenobi); in Jesus’ Name, amen.

CLARITY – 7-16-20 Not The End

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-16-20

Not The End

What’s Happening: “Earlier today Wesley Purkey, 68, was executed by lethal injection for the 2003 conviction of raping and murdering a 16-year-old girl nnd disposing of her burned and dismembered body in a septic pond. His defense lawyers said the punishment was unconstitutional and won in a lower court, but was over ruled last week by the Supreme Court. The execution was carried out in a Federal Prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, and the lethal injection waa of the one-drug type, pentobarbital, rather than three-drug protocol (https://www.yahoo.com/news/u-supreme-court-allows-second-091335106.html).  Quoting from the Reuters article: ‘His lawyers had argued he has brain damage and dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease. They said that although he had accepted responsibility for his crime, he no longer understood the reason for his execution and that killing him would breach the U.S. Constitution.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I read the article…what a horrible way to be executed!”

Biblical Response:  “The teenager’s was less horrible? If you ask me, dementia and Alzheimer’s were a gift. However, justice will be had. There’s man’s judgment and God’s judgment. (Heb. 9:27). It’s kind of like the Good News/bad news approach to sharing the Gospel. ‘It goes like this:

‘I’ve got good news and bad news. First, the good news. When you die, you’re going to get a brand new body. It lives forever. It can never be destroyed. It will experience all five senses to their maximum degree. Now, the bad news. When you die, you’re going to get a brand new body. It lives forever. It can never be destroyed. It will experience all the five senses to the their maximum degree. Kind of sounds like the good news, huh? I guess it depends on where you’ll spend eternity.’”

“Christians? We believe in the Final Judgment (the scripture, above). We also believe God wants us to judge (1 Cor. 6:3-5)….just not to judge hypocritically (Matt. 7:1-2). As far as Mr. Purkey is concerned,,,I can only hope he repented before God. God wants to show mercy, but not at the expense of a disregard for His Son.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to realize there is consequence for sin…here and there; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-16-20 Clay or Concrete?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-16-20

Clay or Concrete?

What’s Happening: “The Supreme Court surprised the LGBTQ world…pleasantly. They ruled 6-3 (Neil Gorsuch surprisingly wrote the majority opinion – John Roberts surprisingly joined him…along with the four liberal justices) that Title VII’s sex discrimination prohibition included sexual orientation. There were originally three plaintiff’s, but all but one died before the court could adjudicate.  Only Gerald Bostock, the Georgia state employee who was fired after it was discovered that he joined a gay softball league, remained. There was much rejoicing by the :LGBTQ community…quoting from the NBC article: ‘Millions of LGBTQ Americans still live in fear of losing their job because of who they are or who[m] they love, so this decision is welcome news,’ said Rep. Chris Pappas, D-N.H., who is gay. ‘The Supreme Court confirmed that there must be equal justice under the law for LGBTQ Americans in the workplace. This decision gives our community dignity and legal recourse should our civil rights be violated.’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/lgbtq-advocates-plaintiffs-rejoice-supreme-203134750.html) ‘Those who adopted the Civil Rights Act might not have anticipated their work would lead to this particular result,’ Gorsuch wrote, adding, ‘But the limits of the drafters’ imagination supply no reason to ignore the law’s demands.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’m not LGBTQ…why should I care?”

Biblical Response:  “And this is the attitude of much of America…even Christian America…but there is something much more fundamental at stake here. Is the Constitution living (up to current culture’s interpretation) or is there such a thing as ‘original intent?’ Clay or Concrete? For Christians there is no debate…the law is unchanging…just like the God who Authored them…Concrete. God has long considered homosexuality, men with men or women with women, aberrant and condemned behavior (Lev. 18:20; 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9; 1 Tim. 1:10; etc.). Although the Word of God may condemn this behavior, the current interpretation of the Constitution does not (or at least it prohibits descrimination on that basis). See the rub?”

“Christians?  We believe that homosexuality (which is a choice, not a proclivity) is a condemned behavior and defies God’s created order (Gen. 1:27). Obviously, we believe in two genders, not in 58!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to see the truth as unchanging as Your nature; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-15-20 Giving and Taking

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-15-20

Giving and Taking

What’s Happening: “John Gardner, 64, at 6pm (CDT), barring any successful last-minute appeal, will be put to death by lethal injection tonight in Huntsville, Texas, for shooting to death his estranged wife Tammy, 41, in 2005. It was testified at trial that she had said that she would not come out of her marriage alive. John, who had been married five times, had allegedly shot his pregnant second wife and injured his third. The U. S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976 (https://www.yahoo.com/news/texas-execute-man-convicted-shooting-110739174.html). Quoting the Reuters article by Brendan O’Brien: ‘On Jan. 23, 2005, about a month after she filed for divorce, Tammy Gardner asked a co-worker to help her ‘disappear’ so no one could track her. That night, John went to Tammy’s home and shot her once in the head, prosecutors said. She died two days later at a hospital.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Maybe he had anger issues.”

Biblical Response:  “You think?! Everyone gets angry, which is no sin, but to lose control…it looks like in his case he was out of control (Eph. 4:26). The Defense probably tried to lay his anger off on some event in his childhood…that, however, is no excuse for taking a life (Ex. 20:13). Giving your life? Well, that’s a different matter (Gal. 1:4, 1 Tim. 2:6, 14). Why different? Because, as in the case of Christ, he did so voluntarily. (He could have called more than twelve Legions of angels to His aid – Matt. 26:33…and at 6,000 per legion, that’s maybe overkill – if you’ll pardon the pun).”

“Christians? We believe there’s a huge difference in giving your life and taking a life. We also believe that there’s a difference in the first death and the second one (Rev. 20 14). The first separates a person temporally from the requirements of physical life – heart beat, respiration, brain function, etc., the second separates them eternally from what’s necessary for spiritual life: God.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to control our anger, but to not live dispassionate lives…also, may we realize the difference in giving our lives and taking someone else’s life; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-10-19 Supremes?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-10-19

Supremes?

What’s Happening: “Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 85 and recovering from a recent surgery. This led her to being absent from oral arguments Monday, and there are certainly rumors that Trump may soon have another appointment to make. If he sticks with the list he put together on the campaign, he’ll be replacing a liberal (currently 4) with a conservative  (https://www.yahoo.com/news/u-top-courts-ginsburg-misses-162121239.html). Quoting from the Reuters article; ‘Ginsburg, who joined the court in 1993, underwent a surgical procedure called a pulmonary lobectomy on Dec. 21 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York to remove two cancerous nodules in her left lung.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Three appointments! That’s a lot, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “Actually, excluding George Washington, who had to appoint the beginning Justices (he appointed 11 during his two terms), there have been 11 other Presidents who appointed more. That does not diminish President Trump’s ability to influence the court for many years to come or exclude the possibility that even more than three appointments will be made by him. Of course, we should not assume that Justice Ginsburg will retire, either. In fact, Justice John Paul Stevens and Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes both served till they were 90.”

“Christians? As far as we are concerned, there is only one Supreme Judge and He is ageless. Nevertheless, U.S. Supreme Court Justices do serve a lifetime appointment. Perhaps that is why the Senate’s role of ‘advise and consent’ is so crucial. Maybe not as contentious as the hearing Brett Kavanaugh had to endure, but at least as prayerful.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we need Your wisdom in the selection of those who will adjudicate our laws; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-6-18 Paid Protesters

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-6-18

Paid Protesters

What’s Happening:  “Three separate doctors from Texas, in line to get into the Kavanaugh hearings by the Senate’s Judiciary Committee, witnessed money  changing hands and said so on their websites…from the beginning of the hearing, interrupting protesters have had to be arrested (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/protesters-paid-say-3-doctors/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘Hey everybody, I’m Dr. Chris Dundas from Corpus Christi, Texas, and we’re up here for these hearings. I gotta tell you, it is very sad. This is a very time-honored procedure and a process, and these young people (mostly young people, some old people), they seem to have no heartfelt convictions why they are here. If you have to pay somebody to protest, that’s a pretty good tell…’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Don’t the protesters have freedom of speech?”

Biblical Response:  “Yes…and I guess they have the right to be paid…of course, there are decorum issues, as well. I guess that’s why they were arrested by Capitol Police. It’s kind of sad how this process has devolved. Give the obstructionists the Congress in the midterms and all this will go away…I think I can put up with the noise…it’s a cheap price for progress.”

“Christians? Money has historically been the price for betrayal (Matt. 26:15). They say ‘follow the money’…of course, we know where it will lead. We must be better than that.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to find the balance our Framers wrote into the Constitution and heed the challenge (Sen. Ben Sasse) for everyone to do their job; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
