A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-23-20
A Battle of Bluster
What’s Happening: “Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Major General Hossein Salami threatened the U.S. Navy earlier today, saying: ‘I have ordered our naval forces to destroy any American terrorist force in the Persian Gulf that threatens security of Iran’s military or non-military ships,’ This may have caused President Trump to retaliate in a war of words that had him reciprocate a threat to harassing gunboats. All of this is likely Iran’s response to crippling sanctions and the withdrawal of the US from the ‘nuclear deal.’ Who will win this battle of bluster? It’s quite humorous to see these tiny gunboats next to a huge battleship or a carrier (https://news.yahoo.com/guards-chief-u-warships-destroyed-101041260.html). ‘I am telling the Americans that we are absolutely determined and serious in defending our national security, our water borders, our shipping safety, and our security forces, and we will respond decisively to any sabotage,’ Salami said. ‘Americans have experienced our power in the past and must learn from it.’ Give me a break! Really?!”
Knee-Jerk Response: “Sounds serious to me!”
Biblical Response: “It may have to Hezekiah, too (he was similarly threatened by the leader of the Assyrian forces – read the account in 2 Kings 18-19). However, the Lord was on his side. Iran touts that Allah is on their side. I guess we’ll see who wins. I will say we are currently in a post-Christian era in America (not the Christian consensus we once enjoyed). Of course, Baal, like Allah, is no god. Sure, Iran can threaten, but the reality begs to differ. Want proof? All I know is that Assyria’s army went home quickly after God killed 185,000 of them in a single night (11 Kings 19:35-36).”
“Christians? Although we believe that God can and does use smaller forces to teach larger forces who’s really in charge (hint; it’s not the larger force OR the smaller force), all this blustering is just so much ‘clouds without rain’ (Prov. 25:14). All this has been predetermined anyway (Acts 17:26). We had just better get in step with God’s plan.
‘This plan of mine is not what you would work out, neither are my thoughts the same as yours!’” (Isaiah 55:8 LB)
Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray: “Heavenly Father, help us to not to make empty threats and to realize our strength comes from You, not the size of our forces; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
