CLARITY – 1-31-20 The Value of a Witness

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-31-20

The Value of a Witness

What’s Happening: “In a stunning statement late last night, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-LA) wrote the trial manager’s ‘proved’ Trump had made an inappropriate call to the Ukrainian President, that no additional witnesses were needed, and that the President’s actions, while inappropriate, didn’t rise to the level of a high crime or misdemeanor and should not be removed for office…that what elections were for (https://www.yahoo.com/news/lamar-alexander-says-charges-against-trump-are-proved-but-will-vote-against-witnesses-041858313.html). Alexander wrote specifically: ‘It was inappropriate for the President to ask a foreign leader to investigate his political opponent and to withhold United States aid to encourage that investigation, But,’ he added, ‘the Constitution does not give the Senate the power to remove the president from office and ban him from this year’s ballot simply for actions that are inappropriate.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I think the whole thing was a sham from the get-go!”

Biblical Response:  “Beginning from BEFORE Trump’s inauguration, why would you think that (tongue placed firmly in my sarcastic cheek)? Seriously, I’m all in favor of additional witnesses (as if 17 in the House Impeachment hearing were not enough!), but even as Bolton’s leaked comments from his upcoming book reveal, there’s nothing we do not already know. We’ve known from the beginning that Trump speaks his mind (maybe that’s why his fans like him…he’s real), but the electorate didn’t have much of a choice in 2016. And maybe we needed a rabble-rouser to ‘drain the swamp.’ In any case, his improved economy and an all-time joblessness will probably overcome folks reluctance in 2020.”

“Christians? We believe in witnesses. In fact, we believe that’s how truth is established (Matt. 18:19-20). Further, we believe God was not satisfied with the obligation of a witness to testify, That’s why He commissioned witnesses (Acts 1:8). He must have considered them important because they were the last words Jesus spoke on earth. Have you testified lately?”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be willing to follow the Great Commission (Mk. 16:15-16) that the whole truth might be told; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-19-19 ‘Another Date That Will Live in Infamy’

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-19-19

‘Another Date That Will Live in Infamy’

What’s Happening: “The historical and biblical references were everywhere, at least by the Republicans, who stood united with four Dems that would not support the articles (three voted against and Tulsi Gabbard voted ‘present’), as the House voted impeachment yesterday. The references were almost all Republican-cited and included the one above, a reference to another significant December event (https://www.yahoo.com/news/republicans-invoke-jesus-pearl-harbor-trump-impeachment-211048856.html). ‘There’s also, in addition to Christmas being something we celebrate in December, the Boston Tea Party took place in December, but also in December, but also on Dec. 7, 1941, a horrific act happened in the United States, and it’s one that President Roosevelt said this is a date that will live in infamy. Today, Dec. 18, 2019, is another date that will live in infamy,’ said Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.).”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “To quote still again, isn’t this ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ (Shakespeare had a play by that title)?”

Biblical Response:  “Well, I wouldn’t say nothing…though it’s just a charge and the Senate, who will hold the trial and has the power to remove Trump from office, will likely acquit. It may seem useless drama – and the main-stream media has created quite a circus-like atmosphere over it in their pursuit of ratings – although most of the polls show little or no change – and the voters will decide in November of 2020, anyway. The above-linked article says that, ‘When Jesus was falsely accused of treason, Pontius Pilate gave Jesus the opportunity to face his accusers. During that sham trial, Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus than Democrats afforded this President in this process.’ If you want to read the biblical account, go to Matthew’s Gospel, Chapter 27, Verses 1-26.’”

“Christians? Oh, we believe everybody ought to have their day in court (Ex. 18:16). It’s just that Jesus, for our sake and to fulfill prophecy (Ps. 39:2-9), chose to remain silent.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give us discerning hearts and the trust that You will see to it that justice is rendered; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-31-18 Presumption of Guilt

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-31-18

Presumption of Guilt

What’s Happening:  “Today, a hearing will be held at 9:00 am (ET) to determine whether testimony and evidence from Ukraine can be presented in the Paul Manafort trial…voir dire (jury selection) will begin at 10:00 am (ET). Manafort, 69, pled not guilty to these charges (of not paying taxes on unreported offshore accounts) and to charges of money laundering he’ll face in a later trial. He was Trump’s 2016 Presidential campaign manager for three months (https://www.yahoo.com/news/ex-trump-aide-manafort-faces-charges-first-trial-101031671.html’While prosecutors have said they will not present evidence of collusion at this trial, they are seeking to provide details of Manafort’s work in Ukraine, raising the possibility that new information about his Russian connections could emerge,’ quoting Nathan Layne, author of the above article.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What if there’s no evidence of collusion?”

Biblical Response:  “So? What if there is? Collusion is not a crime. Obstruction of justice and conspiracy? Well, that’s another story…and collusion is a step closer to those, for sure. Do I, as Trump claims, think it’s a ‘witch hunt’? Probably. I don’t have enough information…and neither do you! As much, politically, you’d like! Oh well, we’ll just have to suspend judgement until the jury comes back.

“Christians? Oh, the jury’s already back on us…and we’re all guilty (Rom. 3:23). Thankfully, Someone’s already paid the price (Heb 7:27). In America, we have the ‘presumption of innocence.’ Of course, that’s on unproven charges. All men have the proven charge of some sin…and that’s what is meant by today’s title: ‘Presumption of Guilt.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not try to earn (or lie) about the charge we all have…for which You’ve already paid; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-25-18 Incommunicado

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-25-18

Incommunicado

What’s Happening:  “The judge in the recent Turpin case (David Allen and Louise Ann Turpin – recently accused of chaining, torturing and endangering their 13 children) has just ordered the parents, who are held in jail on 12 million dollars bail each, not contact their children in any way until January, 2021. The trial, in Riverside, CA (or some other court assigned venue due to the wide publicity) will probably be over long before then (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/01/24/turpin-parents-court-hearing/1062005001/). ‘You must not contact them, except through your lawyer,’ County Judge Emma Smith said.”

Knee-jerk Response:  “Don’t parents have the right to talk with their children? Aren’t folks innocent until proven guilty?”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, and yes…generally. I mean, it is generally the right and responsibility of parents to communicate with their kids, but sometimes it might be better to have no communication rather than harmful communication. Determining that is what hearings and judges are for.  The trial will determine their innocence or guilt.”

“Christians? Of course, we are obligated to care for our kids (Eph. 6:4). Unfortunately, that does not always happen. That’s where families or church leadership steps in to lovingly correct the situation. Occasionally, if all else fails, the law system of a government entity steps in. Failing this, the law of sowing and reaping (Gal. 6:7) takes over.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give the parents their due and help the children move past their abuse in forgiveness and renewed vision for their futures; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
