Shifting Balances of Power

What’s Happening: “In a National Interest article by David Axe that appeared earlier today, it was revealed that the British Navy may struggle to be able to escort its oil tankers in the Straits of Hormuz (an attempted attack by Iranian gunboats on July 13, 2019 highlighted the need brought about by a lessening U.S. presence – a consequence of U.S. energy independence). Brexit has had unexpected costs to the national budget…that and a lessening of money spent on defense has mandated a shrinking military. As the balance of power has shifted, changes might be necessitated. Maybe more dependence on combined allied forces? (https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/iran-wouldnt-mess-royal-navy-if-london-had-more-ships-128897). Quoting from the article: ‘As recently as late 2017, there were rumors that the United Kingdom might try to offset the cost of the country’s exit from the European Union by further cutting the military. Amphibious ships appeared to be particularly vulnerable.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So the price of gas might be going up at U.K. pumps. What does that have to do with me?”

Biblical Response:  “Not mush…directly. Indirectly, it’s complicated, but could affect much. Let me explain. Sure, it’s good news that the U.S. is now energy independent. Our navy not having to protect tankers in the gulf, frees them to be more vigilant of others – I’m thinking of China and North Korea, etc. But it’s bad news that Iran may feel emboldened to have the strongest guys on the block absent…which might lead to more attacks…which might lead to less stability in the region…which might lead to more bellicose posturing against our allies – I’m thinking Israel and Saudi Arabia.  Which might go against recent advances diplomatically…which might affect the stock market…and your 401K!”

“And it’s never good to trust in horses and chariots (Ps. 20:7). What do I mean by a reference to such an antiquated dependence? It represents a principle. To depend on anything other than God is costly- even depending on carriers, battleships and F-35s – I mean, I’m all for investing in hardware our enemy fears, but victory is from God (Is. 31:1-4).”

“Christians? Oh we believe in military preparedness (Luke 22:36), but we also believe in spiritual preparedness (Phil. 4:6). Why is that important? Because ‘the weapons of our warfare are not carnal’ (2 Cor. 10:4). We’re fighting more than a physical battle.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to remember that You, too, have an agenda…life is not all about us;  in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-31-19 Good Fear

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-31-19

Good Fear

It’s Happening: “While much of the western world is Trick-or-Treating, using good-natured ‘fear’ as its calling card, the U.K. (and France, the U.S., Russia, etc.) patrols the oceans with submarines that strike real fear in their nuclear missile threat to kill billions. This threat will be updated, the U.K. announced (it’s assumed the other nuclear powers are doing similarly), with subs launching in the 2030’s and programmed to last into the 2060’s (https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/royal-navy-may-not-be-most-dangerous-it-can-kill-billions-91846)). At any one time, there are 64 nuclear warheads under the sea…and that’s just from the U.K’s threat. Imagine how that number is exponentially multiplied by others.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Should I be doing duck-and-cover drills?”

Biblical Response:  “If that makes you feel better. Of course, that was only created to give the helpless 1960’s public school kids a naive sense of safety…as they huddled under desks with arms over their heads…as if desks and arms could provide any real protection against nuclear holocaust.! And that’s just physical protection. All this alert, alarm, and drill does nothing to shield anyone from spiritual death…the real threat to be feared:”

Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matt. 10:28 NASU)

This ‘good fear’ hopefully will have some rethinking their ‘preparations.’”

“Christians? Generally, we do not favor fear (Matt. 6:34; Phil. 4:6; 1 John 4:18). However, when you consider how holy and great and powerful God is…and how puny comparatively we are…it only makes sense to take Matt. 10:28 to heart (printed above).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give us the wisdom to not make threats emptily, but to make real preparations spiritually, too: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 3-27-18 Coordination Takes Time

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-27-18

Coordination Takes Time

What’s Happening:  “The U.S. and its allies have expelled over 100 diplomats in what is undoubtedly the largest coordinated expulsion in history. A week or so ago, when the Trump Administration did not immediately respond to the expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats in the U.K. over the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, the western press excoriated  it. Blaming the delayed response on the time it takes to coordinate, the U.S. has largely silenced the press. In addition to the diplomatic expulsion the U.S. is shutting down the Russian Consulate in Seattle, citing its nearness to a sub base and the offices of a Boeing plant (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/mar/26/four-eu-states-set-to-expel-russian-diplomats-over-skripal-attack). ‘I have found great solidarity in our friends and partners in the E.U. North America, NATO, and beyond…’ said Prime Minister of Britain, Theresa May. ”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “How long does it take to make a phone call?”

Biblical Response:  “If it were only that simple…there are specific diplomats that have to be named for expulsion and dozens of countries involved each with similar decisions to make. No doubt the western press would have criticized Trump’s impetuousness had he responded sooner. Besides, delay made a great statement of agreement, consensus, and measured deliberation. This only made the Russians look more culpable.”

“Christians? We find ourselves often complaining about the Lord being ’asleep at the switch’…mistaking His delay for inaction…later to learn He had a plan all along (2 Pet. 3:9-10). We must realize there is a difference between a temporal creature and an eternal God (Is. 55:8-9).”

CLARITY – 3-19-18 Tit for Tat

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-19-18

Tit for Tat

What’s Happening:  “The expulsion of 23 diplomats (read: unregistered intelligence officers) from the U.K. (for the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal, his daughter Yulia, and Det. Sgt. Nick  Bailey – all still in the hospital) resulted in the expulsion of 23 British diplomats from Moscow by the Kremlin…and the closing of the British Council (dedicated to cultural relations between the two countries). (http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-43440992). It is believed that someone may unknowingly witnessed the poisoning event. Details of Skripal’s movements are being solicited. Neil Basu, Metro Police Assistant Commissioner, appealed, ‘We are learning more about Sergei and Yulia’s movements, but we need to be clearer around their exact movements on the morning of the incident.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “(yawn) This concerns me how?”

Biblical Response:  “I know that this may seem mundane…especially to the average American. I mean, the UK expels a few, Russia expels a few in retaliation…big deal…so what?” Right? Well, first it IS  a big deal if you are one of those diplomats or their families. And the British Council is trying to prepare young people for a post-Putin Russia. Still, it’s a small deal until you consider that these might be the precursors to war. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail. Is anybody else seeing an alignment of Russia, North Korea and Iran forming?”

“Christians?  Nobody in their right mind looks forward to war. However, we’d be foolish to think we were not in a struggle. We have to remind ourselves that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against the ideologies that challenge the Lordship of Christ (see Eph. 6:12). How do you win that struggle? Long Term; missionaries. Short Term: prayer…and we may have to prepare to defend ourselves. ”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to show meekness (extending the olive branch of peace with one hand, while holding the club of war back in the other); in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
