CLARITY – 9-26-20 The Pot Calling the Kettle

The Pot Calling the Kettle

What’s Happening: “The irony was palpable…so was the anger…first, the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. had scathing remarks to make about China Thursday (in regard to their role in spreading COVID-19), then the Chinese Ambassador leveled an angered response. Sure, there were other remarks made by other nations (African nations asking for more economic relief from the coronavirus), but mostly it was the brouhaha between China and the U.S. Trump’s remarks, lately calling the disease the ‘China-virus,’ has succeeded in only inflaming the Chinese delegation, even if the facts do seem to support their claims (https://www.yahoo.com/news/enough-enough-china-attacks-us-194210842.html). In an AFP article that appeared yesterday,  authors Philippe Rater and Valerie Leroux related: ‘Using a phrase often told by US leaders to China, Zhang said, ‘The US should understand that a major power should behave like a major power. The United States ‘is completely isolated,’ he said in remarks enthusiastically backed by his Russian counterpart.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “The U.N. is mostly impotent…does anyone pay them any attention, anyway?”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not as much as they would wish…that comes from not having a standing army (this is not an appeal for one) and having no real set of laws all subscribe to…there’s just too much disagreement. The report of Thursday’s bloviating is a good example of: saying what you feel, feeling good about it, but nothing really coming of it.”

Why do we have the United Nations, anyway? Maybe because we know we should pursue talking over fighting…but don’t really know how. Like I’ve said before: ‘There will never be peace on earth, until the Prince of Peace rules in the heart of every man,’ That’s not likely to happen any time soon because of wickedness (Is. 48:22)…at least not when we are looking for peace elsewhere.”

Peace is not the absence of conflict…that’s just detente (an agreement to disagree). You could argue that it sure beats fighting, with all it’s unintended consequences and collateral damage. But any peace achieved that way seems only to be temporary.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in pursuing peace, alright…but it’s probably unachievable between fallen men. We all need Someone more powerful than we are, to hold our feet to the fire, Oh, wait a minute…if we only acknowledged that is exactly what is happening.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to seek true Peace…and realize it’s really a Person;in Jesus’ Name, amen.

CLARITY – 2-25-20 Creating “A House Divided…”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-25-20

Creating “A House Divided…”

What’s Happening: “In a resolution read yesterday by the U.N. as an apparent reaction to the 3-week old peace plan the Trump administration presented (without actually mentioning it or Palestinian objections), the Security Council, including the U.S., reiterated its support for a two-state solution. The much-touted Trump administration proposal called for Israeli control of the area with a limited Palestinian-controlled test area and did not call for the expulsion of the 700,000 Israeli settlers in that region, a precondition of previous Palestinian plans (https://www.yahoo.com/news/un-reiterates-support-2-state-193845255.html).  Special U.N. coordinator for the Middle East Nickolay Mladenov said,  ‘They [the Trump administration] would close the door to negotiations, have negative repercussions across the region, and severely undermine opportunities for normalization and regional peace.’ A difference of opinion?”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Don’t the Palestinians have a right to their own territory?”

Biblical Response:  “Actually, no. In the first place, the Israelis did not cede what they won in the 1967 War to anyone (for fear that another attack would be launched from the Golan Heights – a reasonable reaction). Secondly, God, who owns the whole earth (Ex. 19:5), gave that land to the Israelis (Lev. 25:2). Besides, a two-state solution flies in the face of reason and Scripture (Luke 11:17). A two-state solution is only inviting conflict.”

“Christians? The angels may have promised ‘peace on earth’ (Lk. 2:13-14), but there will never be Peace on Earth until the Prince of Peace rules in the heart of every man (Luke 12:51; Rom. 10:9-10). We believe in peace, but real peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of God.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to seek earthly peace (the absence of conflict) WHILE we seek real peace; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-10-18 “…Don’t Know When I’ll Be Back Again”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-10-18

“…Don’t Know When I’ll Be Back Again”

What’s Happening: “Nikki Haley just resigned her Ambassador to the U.N. position, effective as late as January, 2019 (giving Trump time to find a replacement and the Senate time to confirm his pick). In spite of media speculation to the contrary, she says she is not running for President in 2020…or any other public position; she’s already given 14 years of her life and wants to retire to private life, apart from speaking on  issues from time to time … (https://www.yahoo.com/news/nikki-haley-resign-u-n-ambassador-152258353.html).Trump has been pleased with her performance stating, ‘She’s done a fantastic job, and we’ve done a fantastic job together. We’ve solved a lot of problems and we’re in the process of solving a lot of problems.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess she’s had enough, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “Can you blame her? It isn’t easy to go from the U.S. being everybody’s patsy to being respected again. I’m sure it’s taken its toll. Still, she was obviously the woman for the job. I respect her for the consistent and selfless service she has willingly supplied, and respect her decision the ‘go private.’ She’ll be back when it’s time.

“Christians? The only retirement I’ve found sanctioned in Scripture is for priests (Num. 4:3 – at 50), which is good news for us as we are all called to the priesthood (Rev. 1:6).

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to give our all, but know when it’s time to let someone else take over; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-26-18 The Last Laugh May be Filled with Tears

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-26-18

The Last Laugh May be Filled with Tears

What’s Happening: “The unexpected laughter that U.S. President Donald Trump received from the U.N. were reactions to his boast that his improvements were historic. He listed accomplishments in the military, diplomatically, trade and otherwise, touting his administration “in less than two years” had accomplished almost more than any other in this country (https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/world/article/Laughter-at-Trump-among-a-long-line-of-shocking-13257529.php). Trump was surprised by the laughter, but later remarked, ‘Oh it was great, well, that was meant to get some laughter, so it was great,’”.

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It wasn’t meant to be a joke…not to him.”

Biblical Response:  “I’m not sure what he meant, but if he was expecting that liberal globalist audience to react in any other way, he was ill advised. The Make-America-Great-Again slogan might be acceptable on the campaign trail, but not amongst the leaders of the world…all it evokes from them are the uncomfortable laughs of the jealous. Rather than provoking them to their own greatness, these sovereign nations want less American greatness and more parity.”

“Christians? Christianity is not popular among the non-Christians of the world. Saying that your religion offers the ONLY truth flies in the face of religious syncretism and political correctness. No doubt, claims of Jesus being the only way to God (John 14:6) are met with laughter, too.

“For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life.“ 2 Cor. 2:15-16

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be meek and patient teachers of those who are wrong; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-9-18 Peace at What Price?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-9-18

Peace at What Price?

What’s Happening:  “A successful missile attack, likely taken by Israel, resulted in Russian and Syrian accusations of first France, then the U.S. (both have drawn a red line in the event of Syrian use of chemical weapons) for the sarin  gas attack that killed at least 40 in rebel-held East Ghouta. Several countries have called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council (https://apnews.com/d965ed6a364f46fd9888acb9001de501). The Syrian government, of course, denied the claims of using chemical weapons saying,  ‘The army, which is advancing rapidly and with determination, does not need to use any kind of chemical agents.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “There is no excuse, if true, for using chemical weapons!”

Biblical Response:  “If true?! Children coughing up blood is not enough proof?! I will agree that there is no excuse or reason…except the blatant ignoring of international conventions… for the use of chemical weapons. Assad has never let world opinion govern his actions and the Russians (as evidenced by their recent attempted murder in the U.K. by a nerve agent) are a bad influence as an ally. ”

“Christians? While we are not for war and all its collateral damage, as Solomon wisely said, there is ‘a time for war’ (Eccl. 3:8). Some people do not listen to reason (OR follow convention). Those people must be spoken to in a language they do understand. When any dictator deems it too expensive (powerwise) to take an action he will desist…and not until. Let us pray that God will speak to Assad and Putin before we have to…then again, maybe we’ll be His mouthpiece.”

CLARITY – 2-27-18 Ceasing or Increasing?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-27-18

Ceasing or Increasing?

What’s Happening:  “Although the U.N. Security Council has unanimously declared a ceasefire in Syria, government troops continue to fight (shell, bomb, and even use chemicals) because it says that al-Qaida was included in the agreement. So far, 12 have been killed since the ceasefire was proclaimed, mostly in Eastern Ghouta, though Putin has set a corridor for escape from 9:00am till 3:00pm, beginning today (https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/26/588813002/despite-u-n-call-for-cease-fire-strikes-continue-on-damascus-suburb). ‘In this suburb there are said to be a small number of rebels who are aligned with al-Qaida. The government and its allies are basically using that as an argument to say … the cease-fire doesn’t apply here,’ says Ruth Sherlock of NPR.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “i thought whatever the Security Council voted unanimously on was law.”

Biblical Response:  “That’s what you get for thinking. Seriously, they have no standing army to enforce their ‘edicts’ so, they’re only ‘desires.’ It’s mostly political posturing, not anything those on the frontline pay any attention to…unfortunately, those recently killed would say..if they could…which they can’t.”

“Christians? It would be great if we could have peace by just proclaiming it. It doesn’t work that way in the Kingdom of God…or on earth. As I’ve said before, there won’t be peace on earth until the Prince of Peace rules in the heart of every man. (Lk. 2:14)”

CLARITY – 1-6-18 Standing Up for Those Who Laid Down

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-6-18

Standing Up for Those Who Laid Down

What’s Happening:  “There has been a flurry of activity at the U.N. over Iran – in Tehran, peaceful protesters of their government elicited support from Trump; Nikky Haley, America’s Ambassador to the U. N., has called for an open meeting of the Security Council; in Moscow, Sergei Ryabkov, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, argued that as Iran did not pose an international threat, they should not be on the council’s agenda; etc. (https://www.yahoo.com/news/us-seeks-un-emergency-meeting-iran-friday-211619638.html). “The United States continues to interfere both openly and covertly in the internal affairs of other countries. They do so shamelessly,” Ryabkov said. ”

Knee-jerk Response: “Does anything the U.N. does really matter?”

Biblical Response:  “I can see where you are coming from…no power to enforce their ‘resolutions’ and all…still, the media ensures that what they say matters (and sanctions do have some effect).. Besides, the deaths of many (21 protesters have laid down their lives since December 28) cry out for justice. What will come of it all? Some say another war-torn Syria. Others, that the Iranian regime will put down this uprising like they have done others…with horrendous purges.

“Christians? Of course, prayer is in order (Phil. 4:6). And we should support those voices that call for freedom (John 8:32). There is a price, however, short-term and long-term. In the short-term, there may be no alternative to blood. Freedom will prevail, no doubt…eventually…but what will be the price in blood? Long-term? Freedom, once acquired, requires ongoing maintenance (read; responsibility and sacrifice).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to communicate to everyday Iranians the lessons we have learned (and are learning) in the struggle for our own freedoms; in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
