‘Peaceful’ Riots?

What’s Happening: “By definition a riot is a ‘violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd’ (Google), so ‘peaceful’ riots would be oxymoronic, but that is just what organizers would say of the riots that got India student Umar Khalid arrested for demonstrations where those he allegedly started resulted in over 50 deaths. He was protesting the passage by the legislature of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which he claims is anti-Muslim and unconstitutional.  The peaceful demonstration later turned violent and police say Khalid was on of the ‘key conspirators’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/umar-khalid-india-student-leader-062536516.html). Quoting from the BBC article:; ‘The law – which critics say is anti-Muslim – sparked massive protests across India after it was passed last year. One such demonstration in Delhi turned violent and it soon took on religious overtones. The rioting continued for three days, leaving more than 50 people dead.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “He was just organizing…he shouldn’t be arrested for that…he pulled no trigger…weilded no stick.”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, and I guess those over 50 that died did so of natural causes! And he’s not being charged with murder. Besides, I wasn’t there…were you? We all have a tendency to Monday-morning-quarterback – to judge an event from the comfort of our couch…after the fact.”

“What does the Bible say? It acknowledges the emotion of anger, but reminds us of ‘self-control (Which is one of the fruit of the Spirit – Gal. 5:22):

‘Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:’ (Eph. 4:26 KJV)”

“Christians? We believe in God’s power to control our emotions (if we submit that part of us to Him). God acknowledges we are emotional creature; we’d be so bland and heartless if we weren’t; still, He expects us to yield to a different default now that His nature controls us…now that we’ve been born again (Jn. 3:7). Presumably Umar Khalid did not have that advantage.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be reflections of You in all that we do…to default to Your nature; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

CLARITY – 9-4-20 Wake-Up Call

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-4-20

Wake-Up Call

What’s Happening: “The Associated Press, in an article that appeared yesterday, reported the shooting death in Portland by authorities of Michael Forest Reinoehl, 48, as he pulled a gun in an attempt to arrest him as the prime suspect in the shooting death of Aaron ‘Jay’ Danielson, 39, a right-wing protester. The article detailed other felonious acts Reinoehl had been involved in which did not depict him as a good father – one was where he raced his 17-year-old son at speeds in excess of 110 mph. Maybe this will be a wake-up call https://www.yahoo.com/news/ap-source-suspect-portland-death-041327415.html). ‘The violence must stop,’ Oregon Gov. Kate Brown wrote. ‘There is no place for white supremacy or vigilantism in Oregon. All who perpetrate violent crimes must be held equally accountable.’

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wow! 100 days of violence!”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah…the image I get is of a Gov. who expects the violence to end just because she said petulantly, ‘Now you stop that…’Force has to be met with force. As far as parenting is concerned, Reinoehl will not get to get a posthumous ‘Father-of-the-Year’ award. Folly has its consequences (Prov 22:3; Gal. 6:7) Sad that his son might not see the death of his father as a timely warning. I guess we can pray that the Lord, Who is patient beyond belief, will send someone his way to tell him of the Truth…before it’s too late.”

What will come of the violence seen in America today? It will escalate until the people demand that something be done about it. It is interesting to note that all the cities where protests end in violence are headed by Democrat Mayors. Hmmmm…”

“Christians? We believe that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction…sounds like Newton’s third law of thermodynamics…kind of secular, you say. Of course, that might be before you find that Isaac Newton wrote more on theology than he ever did on science. Maybe this is a wake-up call for many.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to wake up to what’s happening and be a part of the solution, rather than a part of the problem; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

CLARITY – 8-15-20 Authority Ignored

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-15-20

Authority Ignored

What’s Happening: “After the Multnomah County (Portland, Oregon) D. A. announced he won’t prosecute most rioters that have been arrested (announcement Tuesday), the Oregon State Police (OSP) announced they were withdrawing from protecting the Federal Court House there (announced Thursday). 500 rioters have been arrested by the OSP, but only 50 have been prosecuted…only deliberate property damage, theft, and threat of violence is pursued in court. The OSP is abandoning an agreement that they protect the courthouse…apparently over the decision not to prosecute most rioters (https://news.yahoo.com/oregon-state-police-withdraws-portland-125002507.html). Quoting the National Review article: ‘Portland has seen riots almost every night since the May death of George Floyd, an African American man killed during his arrest by Minneapolis police officers. Rioters initially targeted the federal courthouse in the city, but after federal and state law enforcement came to an agreement to jointly protect the courthouse, rioters moved on to attack city police.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Say it isn’t so!”

Biblical Response:  “I’m afraid it is…reportedly this isn’t the first instance of non-prosecution of offenders (Kim Foxx – Chicago). What happens when authority is ignored? Chaos…anarchy…the triumph of evil.  What is our proper response to authority? The Scripture says it best:

‘Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same;’ (Rom. 13:1-3 NASU)”

“Christians? We believe in God’s ultimate authority. But what about laws with whom we disagree? Hopefully, those are few and far between (we should deliberate carefully over those who make our laws – legislators). Still, after the smoke clears, we are obligated to obey (only when a higher law is at stake should we disobey – and there may be consequences – Acts 4:1-21).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to recognize authority and give them their due respect and obedience; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Guilty of Supporting the Guilty

What’s Happening: “Monday night, protesters marched in support of the looters and anarchists who (over 100 of them) were arrested Sunday night in Chicago. BLM organizer Ariel Atkins called looting ‘reparations’ (see blogs of: 8/18/19, 8/23/19, 10/31/19, 1/24/20 or 7/18/20 – subdue.com) and said the looters had a right to eat and be clothed: ‘That is reparations. Anything they wanted to take, they can take it because these businesses have insurance. I don’t care if someone decides to loot a Gucci or a Macy’s or a Nike store, because that makes sure that person eats;. that makes sure that person has clothes.’ The march started at the South Loop police station where the protesters believed those arrested on Sunday were held (https://www.yahoo.com/news/blm-activists-march-support-protesters-182852013.html). 13 police officers were injured in Sunday night’s violence which reportedly began when police returned fire and wounded Latrell Allen.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Note to self: DON’T visit Chicago this summer!”

Biblical Response:  “At least not as a protester (turned vigilante)…it’s always good to do your homework anyway before you exercise your First Amendment right of free speech and make sure you’re on the right side of the law. Supporting the guilty makes you just as guilty as they are (Prov. 34:21). Today, everybody’s got an agenda…a message their words and actions are intended to convey. Being on the right side (God’s side) insures ultimate victory…just as being on the wrong side insures ultimate defeat.”

“Christians? We believe in support, but only of the right. Are police brutality and racism not righteous causes? Of course they are! But any cause that ends in violence …well, that violence has a tendency to negate the message. Any change violence brings about is only temporary and ultimately illegitimate.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to support the right and decry the wrong…the last thing we want to do is oppose You; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Go Left at Madagascar

What’s Happening: “You might not know where Mozambique is (East Africa, on the mainland Indian Ocean coast, just west of the island of Madagascar – south of Zimbabwe, east of Tanzania), but they recently (April 7) lost 52 young people who refused to join the ranks of Islamic jihadists. The terrorists are locally known as al-Shabbab, though they would say they are part of the Islamic State. They are attempting to establish a caliphate, but police say they are chasing them to exact justice. Yesterday’s AFP article chronicles a two-year old rampage (https://news.yahoo.com/fifty-two-villagers-killed-jihadists-northern-mozambique-183053657.html). Quoting the article: ‘For more than two years the jihadists mainly targeted isolated villages, killing more than 900 people, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED).’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Another reason I’m glad to live in America!”

Biblical Response:  “Me, too…but we have to be careful that being born here (an event over which we both had no control) doesn’t make us too arrogant to help…or at least pray (Rom. 12:15).”

“Fear apparently had no effect on those young people, at least they would rather die than be a part of the jihadist’s reign of terror. I, for one, applaud them. Until more people are willing to have the courage of their convictions, fear will continue to make folks do things they would rather not. Shouldn’t we fear? Yes, but not like you think (Matt. 10:28):

‘And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.’ (KJV)”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in fear. Godly fear. In fact, godly fear might lead to faith (this is  exactly what Jesus was trying to say in Luke 13:4). This kind of fear leads to wisdom (Ps. 110:11; Prov. 4:7,10:11). The terrorists are looking forward to 72 virgins. Won’t they be surprised?!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we don’t need to be filled with foolish faith, we don’t need to be filled with foolish fear, either; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 11-9-19 Be Careful What You Export

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 11-9-19

Be Careful What You Export

What’s Happening: “Russell Travers, acting director of the National Counterterrorism Center, said that many countries view the U.S. as exporting white supremacy. In an article yesterday, it was stated that Racially Motivated Violent Extremism (RMVE – pronounced ‘remvee’) is a global movement that has killed many in non-coordinated mass terrorism – Anders Brevjik killed 77 in two attacks in Norway in 2011; Dylann Roof, an American white supremacist who killed African-Americans in South Carolina in 2015; and Brenton Tarrant who killed 51 in two attacks on mosques in New Zealand this past March, to name a few (https://www.yahoo.com/news/america-seen-as-exporter-of-white-supremacist-ideology-says-us-counterterrorism-official-232420985.html). ‘For almost two decades, the United States has pointed abroad at countries who are exporters of extreme Islamist ideology,’ said Travers. ‘We are now being seen as the exporter of white supremacist ideology. That’s a reality with which we are going to have to deal.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Who cares what people believe. Doesn’t everyone have the right to believe any way they want?”

Biblical Response:  “To respond to your first statement: the relatives of those killed care. To answer your question: sure, everyone has a right to believe how they like…as long as they don’t take violent means to express themselves. What really saddens me (apart from the indiscriminate loss of innocent lives), is that America is ‘exporting’ any message other than the Good News (Mk. 16:15-16). I believe this is our reason for our founding…for our ongoing existence. Should we cease to ‘export’ the Gospel, we will cease to exist…at least we will no longer be fulfilling our unique destiny. Some might argue that sincerity is the real test of truth, that all one really needs to do is sincerely believe ANY truth. 19 men who flew planes into buildings on September 11 thought that way. They were wrong…as 2,994 now cannot attest!”

“Christians? We’ve, like Don Francisco’s song says, ‘…got to tell somebody.’ We should be driven by a compulsion to share the Good News of God’s grace…in season and out (2 Tim. 4:2).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us, from the love we have so freely received, to feel compelled to give to others so great a message of hope; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

The Plot Sickens

What’s Happening: “The link below was written by the New York Post and reflects their political biases, but everyone agrees that Cesar Sayoc, the 56-year-old former male stripper captured yesterday for allegedly being behind the mail bombs was a sick man. His van, towed yesterday by authorities, had its windows covered with anti-democrat stickers (https://nypost.com/2018/10/26/florida-man-arrested-in-connection-to-mail-bombs/). His cousin called him a ‘loose cannon’ and a ‘lost soul,’ but nothing can excuse his behavior, He will be arraigned Monday.”,

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I think he was motivated by Trump.”

Biblical Response:  “Possibly. As the old saying goes, you are entitled to your opinion…just not you facts. There’s enough vitriol to go around on both sides…remarks and tweets made by Trump could be offset by remarks made by Maxine Waters or Hillary Clinton or Nancy Pelosi or Eric Holder, etc….still,, the only ones wounded physically were Steve Scalise and the others shot that day on the ballfield…all Republicans. Whatever happened to self-control? ”

“Christians? Partisanship is natural (Gal. 5:19-21), but we are supposed to be supernatural (Rom. 12:18). Sure, we have to allow the Holy Spirit to calm us, especially concerning those things that stir us up. Nowhere does He ask us to be less passionate, just less reactionary (Gal. 5:22). ”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to take every thought captive (2 Cor. 10:5), not letting ourselves to be controlled by our lower natures; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Pouting and Unhinged

What’s Happening:  “The GOP has started running an ad that some think should be run until 2020. They say the left is unhinged. You watch and you be the judge (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/watch-gop-ad-should-run-non-stop-until-2020-shows-chilling-leftist-violence/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=CTBreaking&utm_campaign=breaking&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘Trump isn’t on the ballot, but sanity is,’ says an article by Cillian Zeal.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It’s disgraceful…and scary!”

Biblical Response:  “Sadly, I couldn’t have said it better…kind of reminds me of Gov. Wallace in Alabama in 1963. The far left and the far right are both capable of violence when they take matters into their own hands. The cure (for those who think a middle path is the cure) is not compromise. We could ask Henry Clay (1850s) if he were around. Perhaps bloodshed is inevitable…if the Civil War is instructive. Obviously it isn’t…or we wouldn’t be here.”

Christians? Oh, we believe in the inevitability of bloodshed…just His, not our own (Rom. 3:25). His blood-bought peace needs to be at the forefront of our minds…not the violence we feel ‘they’ deserve.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to realize all the violence has already been expended so that we might have peace; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-18-18

Half-full or Half-empty

What’s Happening:  “A huge controversy erupted yesterday over the term ‘animals’ the media claims Trump used to label all illegal immigrants. White House Press Secretary, Sarah Sanders, said the term ‘animals’ was probably not strong enough when labeling MS-13 gang members, to which she said the President was obviously referring (https://www.yahoo.com/news/trumps-use-animals-describe-ms-13-gang-members-wasnt-strong-enough-white-house-says-185118738.html). ‘It took an animal to stab a man 100 times and decapitate him and rip his heart out. It took an animal to beat a woman they were sex trafficking in the back, indenting part of her body. And it took an animal to kidnap, drug and rape a 14-year-old girl,’ Sarah was quoted as saying,”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “The MS-13 gang probably took the epithet as a compliment!”

Biblical Response:  “No doubt…it’s hard to use harsh enough terms to describe their heinous acts. They seem to show no regard for the soul and spirit, let alone the body. Then again, what do we expect from the unregenerate? The rest of the lost only show a modicum of civility because they were raised in a society that condemns violence and substitutes tolerance for love.”

“Christians? We see things a little more hopefully. Though the President may have expressed most people’s frustration at the gang members’ behavior, we believe change is possible – that Man, regardless of how inhumanely he may have treated others in the past, may forge a different future. Of course, none of this is possible without a spiritual rebirth.,..of which no true animal is capable..”

CLARITY – 3-24-18 The Formation of Character

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-24-18

The Formation of Character

What’s Happening:  “Today, the ‘March For Our Lives,’ protesting the violence that erupted in Parkland, Florida, is supposed to draw nearly a million (and many more in the 80 cities that are supposed to hold similar marches Saturday). Teenagers in the D.C. area daily confront violence, though deaths by violent means are down in 2017 (https://www.yahoo.com/news/ahead-march-lives-d-c-teens-speak-gun-violence-see-every-day-171120598.html). ‘I would say seven or eight kids I knew from 8th grade are dead,’ guesses sophomore Myles Nelson, of Edmund Burke School.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What’s wrong with kids wanting less violence in their schools?”

Biblical Response:  “Nothing….it’s all in how you go about it. Teenagers have unreasonable expectations when they want less violence but spend more time with violent video games than their homework. It was the student’s (mentioned above) school namesake Edmund Burke who famously said, :’Education has for its object the formation of character.’

GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) is a familiar concept in the computer world. It refers to the immutable truth that the input governs the output. It’s great to march and all, but until teenagers want less violence enough to turn off the violence on their screens, it’s not going to happen…or is that the parents’ job?”

“Christians?  Oh, we’re all for developing good character. Two scriptures come to mind. The first reflects an obvious truth: ‘As a man thinks in his heart, so is he’ (Prov. 17:6) And the second recommends a proper course of behavior and association: ‘Bad company corrupt good morals’ (1 Cor. 15:33). Of course, those quotes are taken from a book the public schools have banned.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us through this challenge to our emotions; while we want to find a cure to a violent society, help us to not just pursue those means which will only make us feel better about the problem; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
