CLARITY – 11-2-19 Punishing Success

CLARITY

Punishing Success

It’s Happening: “Elizabeth Warren, 2020 Democrat hopeful, alternately front-runner and close runner-up, releasing her $52 Trillion Health care cost, said that she plans to pay for it by taxing the rich. Hedge-fund billionaire, Leon Cooperman, fired back in a 5-page letter to Warren saying, ‘However much it resonates with your base, your vilification of the rich is misguided,’ He cites his humble upbringing, his working to succeed, and his numerous philanthropic programs as he makes a case against her ‘vilification’ of the rich (https://www.yahoo.com/news/hedge-fund-billionaire-fires-back-at-warren-your-vilification-of-the-rich-is-misguided-223828623.html) Warren tweeted back, ‘Leon, you were able to succeed because of the opportunities this country gave you. Now why don’t you pitch in a bit more so everyone else has a chance at the American dream, too?’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “With a net worth over $3 Billion, why shouldn’t he pitch in?”

Biblical Response:  “And maybe he should…but why give the government more money? With the $20 Trillion of debt they already piled up, they haven’t really built up much of s good reputation for fiscal responsibility. Normally you reward success, not punish it. Money is a trust. Some have the ability to accumulate a lot of it. Some don’t. Apparently, the federal government has the ability to spend more than they have. You shouldn’t reward failure (Gal. 6:7).

“Luke 16:1-10 records the situation perfectly. It begins: ‘There was a certain rich man..’ .and concludes:… ‘He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.’ (KJV) It doesn’t take a genius to figure out who is faithful and who is not.”

“Christians? We believe in faithfulness, fiscal responsibility, and in having money…but not in money having us (1 Tim. 6:10; Mark 10:17-22).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, although heaven may render us acknowledgers that everything is Yours anyway, help us in the meanwhile to live here according to Your value system; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-26-19 Who Owns You?

Who Owns You?

What’s Happening: “Although she has stated she is FOR the middle class and AGAINST the overly rich and wealthy, Elizabeth Warren, one of the more liberal Democrat Presidential contenders, may find her now-estimated (by Forbes) net wealth of $12 Million a little embarrassing. Granted, some of that wealth is tied up in her $3 Million Victorian in Cambridge, Massachusetts and her $800.000 condo in Washington, D.C., but the bulk of the rest is in semi-liquid mutual funds and bonds. Does this mean she is against herself, or a hypocrite? The Democrat electorate will decide  (https://www.yahoo.com/news/senator-elizabeth-warrens-net-worth-151126747.html). ‘Rich guys have been waging class warfare against hard-working people for decades,’ Warren said in a speech.  ‘I say it’s time to fight back!’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It’s not her fault she was financially successful…”

Biblical Response:  “Nor is it anyone’s fault who is upper class. The real question is: Do you have your money or does your money have you? Of course, even the ‘hard-working’ middle and lower class needs to answer this question (often the poor have the most difficulty in loosening their death-grip on finances…just because you struggle financially doesn’t mean you aren’t stingy with what little you have…then again, some of the most generous folks I’ve met are also the least who can afford so).”

“The rich young ruler that came to Jesus (Mk. 10:17-21) went away sorrowing because his wealth had him. Is it wrong to be wealthy? No! In fact, that is a worthy goal. But the real question is the one I’ve already stated. It’s hard to give what you don’t have, but it should not pain you to obediently make available your excess. Of course, then, we might need to have a discussion on what I mean by ‘excess,’ but that’s a different discussion.”

“Christians? What is to be our measure of generosity? The experience of the Widow’s Mites comes to mind (Mk. 12:41-44). A person is not measured by what they’re giving, but by their sacrifice. Not equal giving, but equal sacrifice.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to hold on loosely to things, realizing it’s all Yours anyway; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 3-21-19 Good Idea vs. God Idea

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-21-19

Good Idea vs.God Idea

What’s Happening: “In an article by Yahoo News today, Elizabeth Warren, hopeful for the Democrat Presidential nomination in the 2020 election, (or ‘Pocahontas’ as President Trump mocks), introduced Universal Child Care  (UCC), a birth-to-kindergarten government-run system that promises healthier, less crime-prone adults…at ONLY $700 Billion in cost (over the first ten years)…all paid by increased taxes on the rich. She praised Scandinavian countries who use this system as a model, only costing from 7-12 dollars per day (https://www.yahoo.com/news/whos-minding-kids-warren-pushes-universal-child-care-090032595.html). The ‘rich’ has been defined by her as only those that make more than 50 million dollars annually and says that will generate 2.75 Trillion dollars (again, over the first 10 years).”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What parent won’t go for that?!”

Biblical Response:  “Not many…at least she hopes (though I do not accuse her of this proposal for purely political reasons). Many married couples seeking a higher standard of living have opted for private and faith-based child care, but complain that increased costs may offset many of the gains made in having two incomes. Warren’s proposals seem to make that elusive goal within reach…but the cost may not be just economic. Scripture plainly says, ‘ Train up a child in the way he should go…’ (Prov. 22:6) and we are told not to seek great things (Jer. 45:5), that the pitfalls of the rich are many (Matt. 6:19).

“Christians? We see two potential problems: Allowing someone else to raise our kids (I’m all for delegation, but you cannot abdicate ultimate responsibility) AND Spending so much time chasing things that we miss the real ‘treasure’ (Matt. 6:20). I’ve yet to meet the parent who regretted hearing their child’s first word or congratulating their first step. I’m not saying that parents don’t often need help…that’s what extended family is for.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to know the difference between a ‘good idea’ and a ‘God idea’ (Is. 55-8-9); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY- 10-16-18 Testy

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-16-18

Testy

What’s Happening: “The recent release by Senator Elizabeth Warren of a DNA test that indicates she has somewhere between 1/64th and 1/1024th Indian heritage (approximately the average of anyone from North America – though the testing company would not verify whether from North or South America), has Trump calling her “Pocahontas” again. Even the Cherokee Nation protested, decrying her use of their name for her benefit (https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-calls-elizabeth-warren-pocahontas-reveals-dna-results-125833322.html). ‘Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong,’ said Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin, Jr.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Didn’t she claim ‘minority status’ to gain admission into Harvard?”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe, what’s more certain is that Harvard touted her ‘minority status’ when they added her to the faculty. DNA has become the standard for determining familial identity, even tracing us all back to Adam and Eve…sorry atheists (https://pro.stenglernaturals.com/p/HRV180420A/LHRVUA26/?h=true).  Whether Sen. Warren has any more Indian in her than….say…Trump, well, I’ll let you decide.”

“Christians? Tracing our physical lineage back to Adam and Eve, the original parents may be impressive to some, but I’d rather trace my spiritual heritage back to God (Gen. 1:26). I guess that’s the importance of being born again (Jn. 3:3-8).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to “strain at a gnat and swallow a camel” (Matt. 23:24), making a mountain out of a molehill; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
