CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-14-18

You’re Fired!

What’s Happening:  “Familiar if you watched the reality show “The Apprentice,” the phrase is not unfamiliar in the White House recently (Omarosa) and at the FBI (Peter Strzok) yesterday (which could also be said by 1700 VA personnel recently). Everybody knows about the apparent bias of Strzok (ending in the termination of his employment), but many don’t know a new book release may be an incentive for Omarosa  and her source for claims Trump used the N-word (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/pollster-omarosa-says-im-source-of-trump-n-word-story-but-ive-never-heard-it/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=CTBreaking&utm_campaign=breaking&utm_content=conservative-tribune). “I’m in @Omarosa’s book on page 149. She claims to have heard from someone who heard from me that I heard Trump use the N-word. Not only is this flat-out false (I’ve never heard such a thing), but Omarosa didn’t even make an effort to call or email me to verify. Very shoddy work,’ pollster Frank Luntz, not a fan of Trump, Tweeted.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Oops!”

Biblical Response:  “‘Yeah, caught red handed (or should I say green-handed?) Being caught with your hand in the cookie jar may be familiar to many, but I dare say most of us ended that kind of larceny when we were younger. ”

Christians? None of us are innocent of lust…(in Omarosa’s case: lust for money and fame…in Strzok’s case: lust for Lisa, maybe). In any case, we are not to let our desires for revenge get the best of us (Deut. 32:35: Rom. 12:19; Heb. 10:30). We are to please our employers…and that may require a level of integrity we can only get from God…which, after all, may be the point.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to demonstrate that You were wise in choosing us to represent You in all that we do; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-14-18

The Message

What’s Happening:  “With the article from the Post and the testimony of the FBI, White House staff secretary Rob Porter’s resignation over the women abuse (allegations and photos his two former wives submitted) has now run into some conflicts of timing: who knew what, when? White House Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly may not have heeded the warning signs and Rob  Porter has proclaimed the allegations untrue (https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/what-did-john-kelly-see-in-rob-porter). ‘Rob Porter is a man of true integrity. I can’t say enough good things about him,..’ Kelly was reported to say, among other things. He may wish he could take those words back.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I thought it was ‘innocent until proven guilty.’”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe, for some low-level lackey’s job, but we’re talking about someone who gives to the leader of the free world everything he sees. That man needs to be above reproach. Whether or not he really did those things against his wives is irrelevant, it’s not beyond the possibility…and it needs to be. Well, you might ask, who is so squeaky-clean? Not many, but that’s why they gets paid so much. More is said by your actions than your pedigree (Porter is a Rhodes Scholar, Harvard graduate, and former Mormon missionary). Should he have resigned? Perhaps he should never have been hired.”

“Christians? This concept, ‘above reproach’ is not foreign to us (Phil.2:15; 1 Tim. 3:2: Col. 1:22). At least it shouldn’t be. That’s how we are supposed to pick leaders. And can I just say that men are charged to protect women and children, not give them bruises! We’re all for ‘due process,’ but we’re also for sending an unmixed message.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give our leaders the discernment necessary to select the men and women who set an example for us all; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
